Pretty sure Paraguay wanted to intervene in Uruguay, which was the same place Brazil was looking to intervene. Argentina was just collateral.
Definitely a diplomatic/political blunder on the part of Paraguay.
On the other hand the Argentinians and Brazilians might have been looking towards an intervention in Paraguay for quite some time.

Yeah that is pretty much it, though in fact Brazil did intervene first, with the Argentines in support of the uruguayan colorados (who took power after it) against Aguirre (who Paraguay supported)
Then, as throngs of his enemies bore down upon him and one of his followers said, "They are making at thee, O King," "Who else, pray," said Antigonus, "should be their mark? But Demetrius will come to my aid." This was his hope to the last, and to the last he kept watching eagerly for his son; then a whole cloud of javelins were let fly at him and he fell.

I read that as I must remain in power as long as I remain alive.

She wanted to stay in power, the Boxers were against Manchurians as monarchs and as a ruling class.
