Default Gamers 'Hearing Voices Long After Playing'

    http://news.sky.com/story/1310090/ga...-after-playing

Hardcore gamers are at risk of hearing "maddening" screams and explosions after periods playing video games, a new study has found.

Respondents reported hearing sound effects, music and characters' voices after playing games.

Researchers at Nottingham Trent University compiled responses from more than 1,200 online forum users.

Some 12% of those surveyed have experienced hearing noises in their heads after gaming, often without triggers.
The research team called the concept "game transfer phenomena", and said that vehicle noises, lasers, and bullets were among the most common sounds heard.
One gamer said they heard a voice whispering "death" repeatedly for days, while the words "go, go, go" repeated in the head of another when he was on crowded public transport.

The experiences were described as "scary" and "maddening".
Some gamers also reported experiencing sleep deprivation as a result.

One of the team's researchers, Angelica Ortiz De Gortari, said: "These experiences can sometimes result in illogical thoughts and behaviours.
"It's important to help gamers understand their experiences since re-experiencing sounds and voices may provoke distress, especially when associated with dangerous situations in the game."

I think the issue is extreme repetition of the same noises. It tends to lodge itself in the brain. Same with video game music (that's why I turn it off most of the time).

It is no laughing business. After playing diablo i regreted carrying a butchering knife under my overcoat, cause i really thought some beggar was trying to cast a spell on me and retaliated

Luckily it was not a beggar, but a dog. It had two heads though.

This probably could be true in fairness. I've never experienced it myself but after listening to explosions and screams in a game for hours on end, it would probably stay in your head.

That said asking 1,200 online forum users and only 12% said they heard it, I think you'll find that those were the people who realised they could just take the piss.

Is it not very great to hear the sound in the moment you kill people in games?

Those games could sell that as a feature!

    Very funny thread.

Reminds me of the time science was brought in to examine what happens when cornflakes get milk poured on them - Apparently they go soggy, who would have guessed?

So now science has realised gamers have a thing called a memory, this is more great progress.

Next thing you know we'll have proof positive that losing isn't as fun as winning.

I used to play in a Battlefield 2 tournament and our matches would last twelve hours every saturday, and me being the boring child I was, I would sometimes play the whole time. Kept hearing my teammates voices telling me to drop the flamethrower for hours after.
I always found that interesting. I suppose it's the same reason why people can't get rubbish Jason Derulo songs out of their heads these days.

So you are telling me that this is gaming PTSD?

Did I ever tell you about the time I tried to put down the Terrorist Cell WWW? It was terrifying.

I swear I hear 'The enemy General... is dead!' in the early hours as I awake in a cold sweat. I need to stop sleeping with Mark Strong.

    I have forgotten that. Thankfully.

But I do remember one sound that still haunts me to this day...

The sound the game makes when a person is "lost and can't find the park exit" in Rollercoaster Tycoon.

    Get a map, people!

It's sounds like a case of tinnitus and some delusional thinking. Brodmann areas 41, 42, and partially 22.

So this is exactly like being able to hear a song playing in your head after hearing it a lot on the radio....except that since it is the video game industry and thus magically different from any other art form of theatre, film, and music it must automatically be bad!!!!
