    PROLOGUE: THE SIN OF PARIS

Fire, everywhere she looked there was fire. The great temple of Apollo lit the night sky with its flames, its white columns darkened by soot and blood. Everywhere around her, she saw the same; the trees of the palace gardens which she had climbed in her childhood were now smouldering stumps, the homes of the citizens were no more than frames of charred wood. The men and women of her city lay in piles where they had died, their eyes staring into nothingness while around them, the men with swords continued to burn and kill. She screamed and closed her eyes. Its not real! Its not real! she told herself. But she knew it was. Since she was a child, she had had visions and although everything in her visions had always come to pass, no one had ever believed her. How the Gods had mocked her to grant her this "gift" only to let her watch helpless as those things came to pass. The people called her the 'The Mad Princess' and even her family believed her to be touched by insanity.

None of that mattered now. Even if they started to believe her, it was too late. What she saw today would come to pass. If only they had listened to her years ago. Her one great prophecy which made all her other visions seem meaningless compared to its importance...

    'Kill Him!' she had screamed

'Calm yourself Cassandra' her father King Priam had replied.

'KILL HIM! You must kill him!'

'Don't say such things Cassandra' said her mother, Queen Hecuba 'Have you had a nightmare again?'

'No' she had sobbed grasping her mother's shift, 'You must listen to me. Kill Paris, or Troy will burn!'

'She is right' said a new voice. Cassandra turned to see Aesacus, her half brother who was a seer and Helenus, her twin brother who also had visions.'We have seen it in our dreams. That baby will be the ruin of our homeland.'

Her father had looked at the three of them for a long time before saying, 'If all three of you have had the same dream then I'm afraid it cannot be coincidence. The boy will die...'

But her father had not killed the boy. For years she had believed it was so, until one day, he had suddenly returned. The rest of the court had welcomed him back with open arms. Then, he had travelled to Sparta and returned with Helen, the wife of Menelaus, and the court had welcomed her too. He had told everyone that Helen was rightfully hers, promised to him by Aphrodite. The Judgement of Paris, everyone had called it. But Cassandra had another name for it: The Sin of Paris. The choice that would bring destruction down upon Troy. Despair took her and she sobbed. She knew that she did not have nearly enough tears for what was about to come...
