Default MP for RTW and M2TW Now Available On Steam

As you may have heard, a few weeks ago the Gamespy servers had to shut down and it was no longer possible to play multiplayer on ROME and MEDIEVAL II. However we are happy to announce that players who own these Total War classics on Steam can now play multiplayer again.

Players who purchased the game elsewhere can use their existing Gamespy key to redeem the new Steam version. If you own the physical CD version of the game, the key should be included in the package, most likely printed on the back of the manual.
If you purchased a digital version from a distributer other than Steam, your key should have been sent to you on purchase of the game. If you cannot locate the key, please contact the distributer you purchased the game from.

It may take a short time for all Gamespy keys to be registered on Steam, if your code is rejected please wait 48 hours and try again.

Save files from previous versions can be copied from the “…\saves\” folder in the previous installation folder to “…\Steam\SteamApps\common\Rome Total War Gold\saves” or “…\Steam\SteamApps\common\Medieval II Total War\saves”.

I'm wondering if it only activated the MP part of the game. I have both Steam and retail versions of the games. Probably will try to activate the retail ones on Steam, provided I can find where the boxes are. Do we still need to put the ancient DVD in ? I may need to buy DVD-ROM though.

Yeah I know. But I have the original Activision version with 3cds and BI came separately and as far as I remember at that time expansion did not come with cd keys. Same with M2TW Kingdoms I think. Do if I activate it then, do I only get the main game ?

Alright, on another forum I visit people have been activating their base game keys and getting BI for Rome I and Kingdoms with Medieval II.
I am the author of the "Weaker Towers" and "Officers Of" series of mods for Total War: Warhammer!

    Hi there,

you can enter your non Steam key in Steam and he will add the Gold version to your Steam account if you do not have Rome 1 Gold or Medieval Gold yet.
So you do not need your legacy CDs and patches anymore. Afaik installing the patches for Rome 1 (from 1.3 to 1.5) and Medieval can possibly cause issues on Windows 8.1 as the used installers are not compatible. There is no fix available.

Also you can now setup the language for Rome 1 and Medieval 2 incl the addons. Before that only english language was available.

Upgrade path (when entering the key to your Steam account)

    Rome 1 retail (1.0) key
Rome 1 Gold (1.5) retail key
Rome 1 BI (1.5) retail key

    > Steam Rome 1 Gold 1.5 incl. BI Add-on.

Rome 1 TW Eras (1.5) retail key

    > Steam Rome 1 Gold 1.7 incl. Alexander Add-on. Some may exp. problems to get the Alexander expansion. In this case please report in the official support threads on totalwar.com

    Medieval 2 (1.0) retail key
    Medieval 2 Gold retail key
Medieval 2 TW Eras retail key

    > Steam Medieval 2 Gold incl. all expansions.

Retail Kingdoms NEVER EVER came with a key. It was always installed as the expansion it is with the Medieval2 key.
Retail RTW BI the same way.
    I own both.

    ^What he says!

In addition, the statement about English only versions of RTW (and addons) and M2TW (and Kingdoms) is simply false. The original retail versions were shipped as multiple localized versions, same goes out for every patch. I own the original versions distributed for the German market and can install localized versions for English (BE), French, German and Italian or Spanish (haven't done that for a while, would have to check which of both or even if both).

Hi guys sorry for the false post about the Kingdoms key then. on the opposite, while the retail versions were multilanguage, prior the patch some of the games were english only on Steam. At least Rome 1 Gold was not localized on Steam prior the non-Gamespy patch. I am happy CA actually fixed this.

In case of Rome 1 there are two different editions, one including BI (R1 1.5) and one without BI (1.0) so. That's why I enlisted both in the upgrade path.
I hope my posting is still helpful and also answering the question the OP had.

I manage to activate both on my wife's Steam account since I already have the Steam versions on my own account. RTW get BI as DLC and M2TW gets Kingdoms as DLC. Been training my wife for Total War though.

Many did it before this patch for modding reasons. Multiplayer purposes, maybe not.

well exactly for multiplayer purposes. With the new patch retail owners and steam ones are not eachother compatible anymore when playing in LAN. Thats why I wan to have them both to use one or other depending on my opponent (LAN battles ofc)

Why not ask at http://forums.totalwar.com? I have a couple of threads started in the Medieval2 forum myself.
