First I guess we need to find out if the purge has gone ahead?

Then I would suggest coming up with a specific set of tags to use in each board, so we can then go about tagging threads... anyone have an idea how many tags we are looking at to keep the number manageable but also so searches can be specific enough? I mean I guess that will vary board by board but nothing wrong with having a base limit to work with.

In terms of how we get it done I reckon we should have groups of people working on different (broad if we have few people) sections, a) to stop people overlapping with work and b) so people have a clear direction where to head.

How does that sound?

Oh and also what are people's thoughts of having an index recording which threads have been tagged so we know not to go over them? It may take a bit more effort when going through and tagging but should save work in the long run.

I agree with the index. I suggest to have a tag proposal thread for each section and a tag index thread for each forum. in the tag proposal thread's OP we could edit in the current approved list of tags for the forum, while in the tag index thread's op we could edit in the threads treated with or in other words:

Proposal thread
- post tag proposals
- HEX or Curator approves of the tag -> tag is added to the OP
- HEX or Curator disapproves of the tag -> nothing is done

Index thread
- post the threads with link which are tagged
- add them to the OP's index

And as far as I am aware we approve our own tags, or do they require Hex check-over?

Cheers, when you get the chance to avert your eyes from the TV let me know if the couple of threads I've posted are what you have in mind... I've suddenly realised how many different tags there are going to be.

Some of them have been purged, its a pain in the ass to purge tags though. There are currently 140 pages of tags (was 201 when I made this proposal) with 45 tags per page. So 6300 or so to manually go through. I will go through a bunch tomorrow and AL has access because not only is he Curator he is also Tech Staff. So if he wants to jump in and help he is more than welcome to. I will also throw a note up in Hex to get a few other admins to jump in and do some. Maybe we can knock that out in a week or so.

I would much rather do it manually as opposed to taking 5 minutes to write a script and dump every single one of them. I don't doubt that there are some good modding tags out there and I would rather not lose them.

On a totally unrelated note, when we've agreed upon a list of tags and go out to tag the threads. How do we do that? Just post in them or how would tagging work? Call me ignorant, but I never have used tags before, neither with creation, the actual tagging or searching, so I'm uninformed at best ^^

Oh and I was thinking for forum that have indexes already sorted do we need to tag threads? Or would it be better just to tag the index thread with what is commonly associated with that forum so people are taken there?

For example instead of trying to tag every single games review individually why not just tag the index thread (which is kept up-to-date) with "game reviews" this way if people search for that they can quickly find the list of all games reviews.

But how do I actually add a tag to the thread? Can I do that with every post or is this just possible as the OP or editing the OP?

You add a tag to a thread by clicking on the "Add / Edit Tags" button and then typing in a tag you would like to add, it is then applied to that thread. As far as I am aware anyone can add tags at the moment in certain forums (obviously it is changing with the tag team)... try adding a tag to this thread to see.

And where would I find that button? Because I cannot find this button for the Life of me. I could not find it when the tag was there, there was only a button enabling me to search for tags.

Bottom-right of the page, underneath "Thread Information" there should be a "Tags for this thread Thread" box, look to the far right of that.

EDIT: Only thing I can think of if you can't see it is tagging has been disabled for everyone who isn't in the tag group and your request hasn't been processed through yet.

Negative, no such box, no such button.

Edit: just checked that for a thread created by me, there the box appears. So apparently this is only true for thread-starters.
So how do we tag threads that we have not started?

Hmm well my request hasn't been approved yet either, but I can the box in this thread (and in other threads that weren't started by me - try checking the first thread I linked early and see if you can see it in that).

Try and check whether you can see that box in threads of an area you have not been a LM please.

Edit: appears to me as if LM access would suffice in order to tag threads.

2nd Edit: Weird! In the area your link leads to, I can see the box even in threads with not tags applied. Do I need to understand that?

I can see the box in threads in the Writers' Lounger forum, the Product Reviews forum, the first thread I linked to etc. I can always see the box (even if there are no tags) and the button that says "Add / Edit Tags".

EDIT: Obviously you have not fully recovered from being Poached...

EDIT2: Although note I cannot remove tags set by other people, I can only add tags and remove tags I have added.
