Yarp. It's part of the lore setting as a remnant from the 'Great Torment', I guess it just wasn't fully completed with a separate icon as it's probably just the same event for both land and sea.
Admittedly, that does sound a bit harsh to happen so early on, but you should continue on anyway I'd say, a bit of role-playing in games helps keep them interesting!
They're pretty neat. They happen in some regions more often than others. I've had it happen with both Uruks and Pale Knights and it always ends up killing a few generals and near destroying multiple stacks.
