This one an interesting consideration, as I wondered if I should extend them to ten virtues, or trim them to five. I felt a lot tended to overlap in any case, and a more generalized list would be easier for Gnomes to interpret and follow. It's more based on correct behaviour, rather than thought control.

    The Five Virtues - Vices

    Wisdom - Lust
    Temperance - Wrath
    Benevolence - Malvolence
    Diligence - Sloth
    Modesty - Pride

    Astrology

Selecting ten totem animals was a little hard, since they had to be European and real rather than mythical. Mostly. Another consideration was whether they would be domesticated or wild. Also, I wanted them to be more fuzzy and scaled down versions.

Part of the problem is that with ten signs, dividing them into four elements becomes awkward, so you could either go with a duality, yin-yang, or add in another one.

With associated planetary bodies, assuming there is a single moon, you include the sun, three inner planets and three outer planets. You take the Void as an aspect in itself, and perhaps Einstein's Unified Field Theory as a quasi-Force element, or an expression of a Universal life force (as opposed to a bacteria count).

Beaver - not what first came to mind, but makes sense as it's industrious and could be tagged as a water sign.

Boar - obvious, considering the emphasis I placed on boar hunting, and they are prominent in Greek myths. Fire sign.

Ibex - mountain goat. Fire sign, probably because mountains were associated with it in MtG.

Ferret - I considered weasels as rat proxies, but ferrets probably make better pets. Water sign.

Lynx - as neither lions nor tigers were native. Give it Spirit.

Bear - an easy one. Earth sign.

Owl - could have been the raven. Air sign

Hawk - eagle seemed too big and imperialistic. Air sign.

Wolf - it was a toss up between this and the ferrets, but the wolves became earthy. Earth sign.

Fox - Spirit sign. Very kitsuneish.

    Horned God

He's the counterpart to the Triple, or in our case, Tetranary Goddess. Seems a sort or primordial instinctual divinity of life force and rebirth, corn, sun, fertility, and death. He's also the leader of the Wild Hunt. If we nicknamed him Old Horny, it would have a rather sexual implication.

The equivalents would be Cernunnos and Pan. Not forgetting Herne the Hunter.

Unlike the female side of the Pantheon, I don't think it would work to combine the male aspects into one composite deity.

I'm also handicapped by having four principals to choose from. It doesn't fit Loki, nor Wayland the Smith. I had imagined Beowulf as a more paladin like figure, or Hercules and Thor combined. That left Woden, but I saw him more as rational.

Interestingly enough, I originally pegged Beowulf as guardian of the afterlife.

So, if I want use this concept, it would have Beowulf, and he'd lose that the Adventures of Hercules aspect, going around and having adventures, or I could stick it to Woden, but that conflicts with my idea of having him be patriarchal and all inclusive.

Having thought about it, perhaps the Gnomes don't really need a Hercules figure, but a stern protector. In which case calling him Hern would fit or perhaps, Cern.

Giving the nature of Gnomes, perhaps their hero would more likely be Wayland the Smith, though I had thought that I should lame him, which tends to limit adventuring possibilities.

Loki tends to present a certain moral ambiguity.

Travelling, nature, fitness, protection, deception, illusions. earth, mining, entropy, revenge, chaos, destruction, evil, strength, war, greed, blood, humour, gemcutting, smithing, vigilance, combat, as far as I can tell.

From the above, fitness, travelling, strength, humour and vigilance are interesting. Fitness and strength, assuming you seriously entertained the possibility would go to the Hercules figure, which now no longer exists. Which is a pity, since I wanted to include wrestling as part of Gnomish culture.

Revenge, chaos, destruction, blood,, entropy, evil and greed are represented under malice.

Humur can be given a miss, but mischief would fall under Loki. Deception as well, though I would have thought the Gnomish Pantheon to have elusiveness, misdirection and deception in general.

    Cultural Festival

There should be an Olympiad every ten years, though as a celebration of Gnomishness, not exclusively as a series of sporting contests. This would sort of be a huge musical festival, State Fair, cooking, poetry and play contests, auctions and sales, exhibitions of inventions and art.

    Calendar

    Months

You can't neatly divide 364 days by eight or ten, though you could by four. The Elves have seasons instead of months, so it's an interesting question if Gnomes would have that concept as well, since months tend to be the equivalent of a lunar cycle.

I'm very tempted to make the lunar cycle at twenty six plus days, since thirteen is too short, unless you add a second satellite, which you'd then would have to explain mythologically.

Or I could simplify this issue by dropping the concept of months.

    Weeks

I will admit instituting a five day week was pretty much biased by my personal wish to get every fifth day free, and being too lazy to actually try to name ten days.

However, ten day weeks make more sense for Gnomes, since ours was religiously based, a medieval work week was going to be a minimum of six out of seven days anyway, not counting those that had to go and look after the livestock on Sunday in any case.

A ten day week would consist of eight working days, and a two day weekend. Added in would be at day five something called Midweek, where a certain amount of slacking off was allowed.

    "Gnomish" Legion

The Elvish Imperium's primary military instrument is the Legion, of which there are twelve permanent formations and organized by Gnomish staff officers. The thirteenth is an ad hoc formation, generally made up of available units, mercenaries and regional cohorts and centuries, at the whim of the Empress, and usually tasked with a specific objective.

Elven Houses maintain their own troops, from which are drawn hoplites, archers, light cavalry, heavy cavalry and close combat specialists for the Imperial Guard, which includes the most loyal of human Legionaries.

A separate Marine Guard was established for specialized littoral operations and shipboard security.

The Admiralty is almost totally run by Elves.

The Legion is the largest formation, and is permanently assigned the following units, usually selected from the more promising recruits:

    Combat Vexillatio
    5 Gladius Cohorts

    Support Vexillatio
    Headquarters Cohort
    Cavalry Cohort
    Pike Cohort
    Peltast Cohort
    Archer Cohort

    Quartermaster Century
    Engineer Century
    Medical Century
    Signals Century
    Mage Century
    Food and Beverage Century
    Armoury Century
    Wagon Century

    Vexillatio

Usually an independent task force organized at provincial level and commanded by a Praetor, made up of available units. Can be attached to a Legion temporarily.

    Cohorts

Administratively consists of ten centuries, if permanently attached to a Legion, usually single arm formation. If independent or provincial, the troop types may be more balanced. Commanded by a Tribune.

    Century

Single arm unit made up of one hundred troops divided into ten men tent groups, though if an independent command, troop types are mixed or are trained to handle a wider range of weaponry. Commanded by a Centurion

Mercenary units are hired in century lots, in order to ensure mercenary commanders are reliant on the Imperium's commissary and prevent any possible serious internal security issues.

Having a smaller overall military without the need to project power, but the Gnomes kept the basic structure of the Legion system (having organized and administered it, if not invented it), but emphasized more on the cohorts, as the military's primary functions were defense of the Gnomish homeland and cohesion of the Gnomish nation.

The Gnomes translated the military terminology to their native tongue.

    Crossbow

The crossbow would be the principle missile weapon, especially if the Gnomes would be able to engineer to human standards, but usable by the normal Gnome. I tend to think they'll end up with something like this:

I like to think they've come up with either a split limb/lathe that can be opened like an umbrella, or one that swings on it's axis. Possibly a way to telescope the stock.

Or have an assault variant that massively increases the rate of fire.

For the heavier variant, which presumably would be just under 32", they would have propped it up with a stand, just like a musket.

Crossbows tend to have a slow rate of fire, so the Gnomes would try to go for one shot one kill at the longest possible distance. If the enemy didn't advance, the armbrustiers would take their time to pick them off. If they advanced, they would want to make their shots count, before they retreated behind their pikemen, and then shot over their heads at their larger sized opponents.

    Terminology

    Armbrustier - Crossbowman
    Pionier - Combat EngineerSpeisser/spiesstraeger - Pikeman
    Hellebardier/Hellebardentraeger - Halbardier
    Reiter - cavalryman

Ritter is a knight, a warrior caste that the Gnomes won't have; in fact, the Gnomes don't officially have any castes, though it may seem that some families tend to stay in the same trade. All Gnomes are expected to serve ten years in the Heer, and then be transferred to the reserve units which are organized as on call militia by cantons and parishes, usually rated by the average age of the troopers which presumably reflected their readiness and effectiveness, if
not necessarily their proficiency or experience.

    Armour

    Infantry

At two thirds human, you'll have to expect Gnomes to have a slower movement rate than humans, but you could assume that on the battlefield, this isn't a factor, as long as the Gnome isn't overly encumbered, since you really do't want them to be as slow as Dwarves.

As such, outside of a pair of stout boots, they would only wear padded underwear below the belt; maybe a codpiece. I considered that they might only wear a breastplate, but considering that they have a rather long lifespan, investing in a backplate as well would make sense. That would give them half plate if combined with a three quarters helmet.

They wouldn't use ring or chain mail, or variants thereof, because it would be faster to hammer out dents, and also, with their short stature, they'd want to avoid bludgeoning damage which would be just as damaging as an actual penetration. Gnomes would probably be excellent manufacturers of chainmail, since the effort involved is on a smaller scale than having to hammer out plate armour, which heavily thewed Dwarven smiths would seem physically more capable off. Chainmail also seems to have required less labour than plate to manufacture.

Splint mail seems inherently dangerous, though banded provides flexibility, but probably going for a more Renaissance aesthetic.

That more or less leaves a combination of leather, padded, and perhaps leather studded with metal bits.

Skirmishers will need lighter armour, and probably a more open form of helmet, perhaps not even metal, though experience should have made them wary of head injuries. Buff coats are very thick leather, which lacks the flexibility they would need. Padded would give them some buffer from the usual scrapes and bruises they'd get from scrambling around, and they might have invented some fabric that prevents penetration. Or perhaps a layer of chainmail sandwiched between two quilts.

Or it could be that the padded armour is the underlayer for the cuirass, and essentially light troops just have one less layer of protection. It would be a solution for the Pioneers, who'd have occasion to want a lot of protection, and on others, sufficient just in case.

Individuals might have a more frankensteinian suit of armour, made of armour sections to body parts they feel are most threatened, or would like to keep undamaged

Since it's the Renaissance, the Gnomes mostly discard shields. Except that the Pioneers would like pavises for the times they wouldn't want to be disturbed by a stray arrow, and possibly armbrustiers who trade shots during sieges.

    Cavalry

    Depends on the mount.

Ultra heavy cavalry is already outsourced, so the mounts won't get barding, though you could leave that as an option for officers, commanders and characters. Unless they get an elephant.

Shields seem like a good idea. Medium probably. Small and buckler doesn't seem to cover enough body. And you can hang it behind you, if you need to beat a hasty retreat.

    An early draft, for reference.

    Defining Gnomes

Defining Gnomes as a race is a rather difficult task, since there exist dichotomies, not only as to how they are perceived, but also as to how they perceive themselves.
Gnomes have a reputation of living underfground. This is actually not true, Gnomes really enjoy living above ground and build their abodes above ground.
This may be due to the fact that the primary homeland of the Gnomes is a mountainous region, and in order to establish lines of communications between major settlements, where there was a mountain, Gnomes tended to drill through it. While their major cities were above ground, the Gnomes established their arms depots within the hearts of mountains.
Whereas dwarves like talking about clans, and elves about Houses, Gnomes like talking about Guilds, since that is what defines them. When a gnome becomes an adolescent, a vocation is then decided upon (with or without input from said vocationeer or even over his objections), he’s usually apprenticed to a master for a set number of years. These guilds tend to be restrictive in their memberships, as some are highly specialized, to the point that they might contain subguilds.
Generally speaking, there are 9 major guilds and one that’s never mentioned.

Gnomes have a compulsory retirement age of 200 in all the cantons except Tropicana – there there is no retirement age and you can work until you drop.
For the military, compulsory retirement from frontline service is 150 years, except in Tropicana (as long as the Gnome retains a minimum level of fitness and combat proficiency).
However, the voting franchise is only available to gnomes (and specifically only to gnomes) above the age 150, though both sexes may vote.

    Gnomish Legion
Each Regular Army regiment is organized according to the yearly intake.
The Garrison regiment consists of veterans who have fulfilled their 5 year conscription and with meritorious service conduct and are invited to fulfill vacancies – the garrison regiment has a depot company guarding the main depot/arsenal in Basern, a company each in the cantons except Alpenzell and Tropicana, which have each an independent platoon.
The Great Mountain sanctuary is maintained by the Templars.
The Engineering regiment undertakes all major civilian and military works in the confederation

A boar spear is a spear used for boar hunting. It is relatively short and heavy and has two "lugs" or "wings" on the spearsocket behind the blade, which act as a barrier to prevent an injured and furious boar from working its way up the shaft of the spear to attack the hunter.
The boar spear also became popular as a weapon of war, since the lugs can also be used to hook shields out of the way during combat, as well as preventing a spear thrust from going too far into a victim (particularly a charging horse), thus making it easier to quickly withdraw, and less likely to break. Boar spears remained in use as weapons until the earlyMiddle Ages.[dubiousdiscuss] In the 15th century, a variant with a longer shaft[specify] called a chiavarina was in use as a weapon of war.

    Why the Boar Spear?

The emphasis on the boar spear was a confluence of a number of different ideas and perceptions.

The halberd might have been the most recognizable symbol, but it really is a specialized combat tool, that no one would be able to drag around, without creating unwanted interest. It's based on the woodcutter's long axe, a tool that only seems required for those that are actually employed on that chore.

The other two associated weapons are the crossbow and the pike. The crossbow would seem closer to both the founding myth, and the jaeger culture, but the Gnomes variant would be more complex, and for hunting, about as sportmanslike as an Armalite. Schutzen clubs are actually a way to promote proficiency with missile weapons, which were the principal combat weapons after the Renaissance, but in this era for the Gnomes it would be close combat weapons, with reach.

The sword is not a weapon that really comes to mind, especially as it would tend to be a shortened, less impressive variant, without the reach that the Gnomes would need to face larger opponents. They might have large knives, with which they could settle some duels and disagreements, but it's meant more for as a tool and a back up weapon. This could extend to what we term a short sword, but this is more an aesthetic design choice that I made, based on what seems Warhammer's vision of Dwarves adopting basic tools for their principal combat weapons. To a certain extent, it's also a more egalitarian, proletariat choice, since to our mind the sword is symbolic of a warrior caste, whereas a knife is utilitarian.

The pike is another specialized combat weapon, and it evolved from the spear. Even an ordinary spear has reach, and it could be thrown, though apparently, so can a halberd. The pike also keeps one's enemies at a distance and eventually became dominant on the battlefield, if used decisively, and pretty much neutralized the aristocratic cavalry, the former dominant force.

Despite the slightly more sophisticated mold of the boar spear's head, it represents a bridge between the more primitive fire hardened tipped stick, and the sophisticated pike. While very useful as a combat weapon, it's primary use would be for hunting some delicious free range bacon, which again harkens back to a time when you're more in touch with nature, and that had to be confronted up close to ensure survival. It could be used both mounted and unmounted.

Of course, there are other aspect. The spear was the primary weapon of Odin, who I decided would be the archetype that would be the patriarch of the Gnomish pantheon. Warhammer giant boars were considered as an alternative mount to the St. Bernards, as their fierceness would compensate for the Gnomish lighter frame on the charge, and you'd need a tool to deal with the barely tamed mount.

There were other alternatives like deer and bear, but none seem to resonance like the boar, seems to get mentioned quite frequently in mythology. I'm still wondering if Gnomes bother setting up pig farms, though I'll probably come to the conclusion that they do.
