I use the "cursus honorum" + something else
they stay in Rome (or, when the empire is too large, some other city with a big school) until 22, then take the command of a legion, until 40 years, when they get the command of a city
the only exception are generals who achieved a triumphus, who can remain in charge until 60 years or more.
Furthermore, if a general (and subsequently his family) achieves some regional name (i.e. "Hispanicus", "Gallicus", "Africanus"), usually I grant them the relative regions
In the end, a general with at least 10 victories is achieved a "guard" (some extra unit following him until death, usually a Cohors Evocata or Elite Heavy Infantry of the Italic Allies), if he achieves triumph he get some other units (usually 1 heavy cavalry unit, like Elite Heavy Cavalry of the Italic Allies, OR 2 light cavalry, like the Campanian Cavalry, OR 3 infantry units, like the Cohors Evocata or Elite Heavy Infantry of the Italic Allies) they remains with him until he pass.
Then they return to their barracks.

Try reading that guide in the FAQ/Beginners Tips section by Quintus Sentorious, or whatever his name is. He's put quite a lot of thought into this.
Roman "cursus honorum" via my own opinion in early (Camillan) and middle (Polybian) Republic (I consider Late Republic starts with Marian reforms) :
FM 15 - 20 years old : staying in Rome, studying at school, never acting in a land battle
FM 20yo + : moving to a permanent training army barrack(camp) near Roma and Capua (they don´t receive than any ancillaries from school and will have enough place for future to acquire ancillaries as "Governor of xxx, or "Legio xx" in post-marian age). During these years, after becoming "Tribunus Militium" they are assigned by "Senatus" as real tribunus militium to bigger armies (two or more roman legions + socii alae* see below) to be a heavy cavalry or have some minor tasks as leader(general) of smaller task group (max. one roman legio + socii alae etc).
FM 30yo and "senator" or "(ex)praetor" or "consul(ar)" may have been assigned by Senatus as a leader (dux, general) to bigger armies (consular armies), or commited to govern important cities or whole provinces (Cisalpina, Sicilia etc) and lead local armies stationed there.
"Primus inter pares" (faction leader) must be everytime the oldest man or old man with the higest influence and execute his duties in senatus in ROME.
These rules are not 100% applicable, due to a crisis or not-easy days of SPQR (for example: not enough FM, not enough skilled FM etc.. .. remember that young Publius Cornelius Scipio (later Africanus) was assigned as leader of hispanian campaign during 2nd Punic war in his 25 years and without being consular.
Roman army composition:
Camillan age:
Roman Legio (1x hastati, 1x principes, 1x triarii, 1x Rorarii) + Socii Alae (3x various italic infantry)
Roman consular army (2x Roman Legio + 2x Socii Alae + roman/socii skirmishers and cavalry + FM Leader + FM tribunus militium + mercenary units)
Polybian age:
Roman Legio (1x hastati, 1x principes, 1x triarii) + Socii Alae (2x various socii infantry, 1x Pedites Extraordinarii)
Roman consular army : composition is changing during the time from more tide to more variable (2 - 4x Roman Legio + 0 - 3 Socii Alae + roman/socii skirmishers/light infantry and cavalry + mercenary infantry and cavalry (african, gallic, greek etc) + FM Leader + FM tribunus militium).
Now I´m in 205 BC, fighting true and honour wars in Macedonia/Greece and Hispania, defending Gallia Cisalpina against Gauls and Germans and own African lands (Carthage Republic was annihalated)...
In time I´ll continue..
