Thread: China angrily denounces "provocative" speechs from US and Japan

“Current trends in China’s weapons production will enable the PLA to conduct a range of military operations in Asia well beyond China’s traditional territorial claims. Key systems that either have been deployed or are in development include ballistic missiles (including anti-ship variants), anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles, nuclear submarines, modern surface ships, and an aircraft carrier,” the report says. But expansion is not China’s goal. Its military modernization program is designed to improve the country’s ability “to fight and win short- duration, high-intensity regional contingencies.” Taking Taiwan and preventing the United States from coming to the island-state’s aid remains the “focus and primary driver of China’s military investment.”

    ...

“China’s use of punitive trade policies as an instrument of coercion; and China’s actions to pressure Vietnam and the Philippines in the South China Sea and Japan in the East China Sea. Official [Chinese] statements and media during these situations seek to frame China as reacting to threats to its national interests or provocations by outside actors.”

Breathless China hype porn. Look I have no doubt China is building its military capacity but adjusted for inflation in China its budget is not all that impressive. One CV a gruesome long refit of aging USSR cast off - not exactly a capability. What air wing anyway. Sure in 10 or or 20 years it may provide the base of experience. But right its a glorified training vessel.

"include ballistic missiles (including anti-ship variants)"

Something China has never publicly tested mind you - have ever seen one shoot even a know target? And it would be fantastically destabilizing. The Hype surrounding this weapon is enourmous but lacks any evidence at all the USN might as claim it has rail guns and lasers - at least we have their tests.

no need to; the US have proven it's unwilling to go to war for any of the SCS claimants or even Japan (man, Kurt Campbell must be screaming in rage at obama these days).
IF the US was serious, they would've done something back in 2012 when China claimed Scarborough shoal, but they havent and now you have states like the filipinos and the Viets holding the bag.
Fact is, no US President is going to allow American soldiers to die just so some Asians can further their own geopolitical goals

But no one is quite sure if the Chinese piss off the Japanese enough, that when they attempt to claim some god forsaken rocks in the middle of the sea by sending troops to occupy them, that the Japanese immediately launch an amphibious assault to throw them off, and call in the Americans for air cover.

I personally think that for China, a true military conflict is completely illogical right now. China is going to have a hard time even holding its economy together soon enough. Things would either have to get much worse, or much better for it to make any sense.

doubtful; how long do you think Abe's policies are going to last once he leaves office? How supportive have the Obama admin. been towards Abe's desire to supplant US supremacy in Asia?
Time is on China's side, even the Japanese know it, hence why they're trying their hardest to start a war

    Unless public demands so.

Which is why China is working on those issues now; I view all those provocative actions merely delay attempts to prolong the tensions/conflicts until China is ready. But when China is ready, then what, total war?

I think that will depend on where the mindset of the Chinese people is at that point. I can't say I'm versed enough in that sort of thing to really predict. Its getting harder for the government to control the message there.

China has historical territorial greviances that is wants to address, it has addressed many of these peacefully so far (e.g. Hong Kong, Macau), the stronger it gets, the better leverage it has. I think its pretty smart when it comes to negotiation, make claims (some outrageous but will some historical evidence e.g. Kashmir) and then come to agreement and settle on that thing you wanted in the first place. There is no way China actually thinks it can get away with the sea claims it is making, but as long as they push it as far as they can, when a settlement is negotiated, they will get more than they initially hoped for.

That is if a war doesnt accidently break out.

Come August 2014, a Chinese princeling/heir will be assassinated by a Vietnamese anarchist while visiting the Paracel Islands.

    No just no.

Thread closed due to a resurrection where there's nothing to reasonably discuss.

If anyone does wish to continue this with a statement/update pertaining to the actual topic, feel free to pm me and we'll make it happen.
