Yes, you must at least double flank them. This escpecially helps against phalynxes because those holding the spears getting hit from the side at the edge of the unit must drop their spears, which helps your other unit in front of them to come in.

A nice little trick I learned was to take a small, tattered unit and engage them with the phalynx, then take a good unit and come in from the side. To this, the phalynx won't be able to adjust fast enough, thus, your good unit got into close quarters instead of at the tips of their spears.

No, you don't have to double flank them unless the phalanxs aren't Militia Phalanxs.

All you need to do is attack the phalanxs with least two Wardog units from the front since Militia Phalanxs has poor morale and will likely rout sooner rather than later.

    Hey Guys!
Here is how you defeat phalanxes as rome. This battle is in very hard difficulty, a historical battle called the battle of asculum. It's played on normal mode, then hard mode, and finally very hard mode. What you want to do to defeat phalanxes is:
1 : strip the enemy of all supporting units, or else, GG
2 : Don't give battle on flat ground directly from the front
3 : Don't give battle without outnumbering and outflanking the phalanx
4 : USE SKIRMISHERS AND CAVALRY. Don't rely simply on infantry
5 : Use uneven terrain filled with rocks and trees to break up their even lines
