Maximian would probably get the support of the Praetorians and Herculianii. Whoever owns Diocletian's former capital would maybe get the Jovianii. The other question would require research.

What I'll probably do is just give the Herculianii and Jovianii decorum to Maximian's Comitatenses Legionaries/Lanciarii. Then Constantine I and the other two will have different decorum for their Comitatenses Legionaries/Lanciarii. As I understand the Herculianii and Jovianii were brigaded together on the battlefield, and for various reasons I'm not of the opinion for neat and tidy perfect organization of every single guy (outside of more elite corps) having the exact same shield. Especially since this was still the period without a codified Limitanei/Comitatenses division, but rather ad-hoc collecting of regiments (save for those proto-Comitatenses of the Herculianii and Praetorians and so on).

Well, how are the Praetorians going to be dealt with? Even though they would be quite compared to the Herculianii and Jovianii Maxentius did have them. Also are you guys gonna make bronze versions of the helmets?

A super tentative (as in, just off the top of my head) roster would be something like this:

-Auxilia = 1 as spearmen, 1 as swordsmen. Mix of unarmored and armored. Could axe and replace with some sort of Ripenses Cohors to represent Frontier Auxilia/Legionaries. Low-medium quality.
-Legiones = 1 as spearmen, 1 as swordsmen. All armored, could be subsumed into a single Ripenses Cohors kind of unit. Medium quality. Generic legions, variety of decor.
-Comitatenses/Comitatus Legiones = 1 and spearmen, 1 as swordsmen. High but not -elite- quality. Think Veteran Legionaries/Evocati. Herculianii/Jovianii regiment for Maxentius or whomever, and equivalent corps for others. Maybe Constantine's will have the Chi Rho, and so on.
-Single Legionary Slinger, Archer, and Exculatores units. From what I've read such light infantry/missile troops were formed from ad-hoc collections of heavy cohors in a legion/army, so I don't have to worry about an Auxilia archer, legion archer, ect.
-Praetorian infantry or some equivalent guard corps if they were renamed (briefly saw something about one of the 4 emperors naming them Scutarii, but I have to double check).

Not counting various Foederati and specialist auxilia, and of course cavalry who are a whole nother picnic to deal with.

I like this idea. since we dont know (or at least I have no clue) what a Praetorian shield would look like you could just take a old version and slap the pattern onto a oval shield. also with the more barbarian helmet ( the one that is just more or less just a cone cap with no cheek guards and the other one with cheek guards) I would limit that to auxilia and border troops with a mix of other helmets but I don't think a legion or Comitatense of this time would have that in there ranks, definitely after 375 but I doubt during this time. the armies seem pretty well supplied with roman made equipment made from the factories owned inside the empire.

I posted a picture to better explain what I mean.

the red are the cone helmets I referred to while the blue I would put more in the units as they are the helmets made in parts and fast from the factories and the green is... well it just looks like the units helmet from my avatar so I like it lol

I don't know of bronze variants to the ridge/spangenhelm, but if you can point me to one I'm not averse to the idea. Know they can have bronze/copper/silver/gold decor, but that's a later priority with all that's on the table.

Legio_XX - There's a possibility we have an idea of the Praetorian's shield decor, it seems to be one with gold feathers/scales radiating out from the center. I'll see if I can pull up the info, but even if that is the case I'll have to see if I can actually depict the radiating scales to satisfaction.

Regarding the spangenhelm Imperator made (the cheekless and cheek), I've seen a praetorian depicted by some Osprey artist with it (the cheek one), but I understand where you're coming from. I'll probably do that. It might be my misunderstanding but it seems like the ridge helmet is often considered the 'standard issue' helmet, so I imagine it and variants will be used the most.

Just wanted to add that if you guy are going to go the DeI route and have a somewhat large number of Auxilia (more than just 1-2 Auxilia infantry, basically), it would be more interesting to have a variety of different quality units. From a tunic-wearing, local militia type of auxilia to more of the 3rd century equivalent of the Batavian Cohorts And likewise something similar could be done for the Legions. Pannonian, or Gallic/Germanic Legions would be higher quality than an Egyptian Legion for example.

Anyways, I'm excited to see this mod progress further. Even in its relatively barebones state it's pretty interesting, a lot of fun.

We probably won't have as large a variety of auxilia considering in DEI's period the sources Rome looked to for Auxiliary manpower was highly varied - in this period an auxilia cohors reinforced in Gaul and the Danube would probably not look too different. The more exceptional Auxilia will be featured, like Moorish foot and horse or Eastern foot and horse archers. With regards to Foederati while I am working on the Romans my approach is simply going to be a generic Germanic Foederati. If when I start to read about the Franks, Goths, ect and I find the means to divvy up foederati (meaning different fighting styles, quality, dress. Before anyone says anything it's not clear the Franks had the throwing axe in the 4th century, and if they did unless the projectile will spin it would look too silly to have.), then I'll be amenable to it.

Ahiga is truly doing an amazing job

In a few days (hopefully) I will have an update that includes an updated startpos and various improvements. After that, the model/texture/unit/recruitment update is next. It will be a long process, but I am confident that the end result will basically be an expansion for Rome 2.

Dresden, you're working on DeI and C:RoC? If so, great work, friend! Don't burn yourself out, though. Don't want to be like great modders that have come and gone and do too much at once...

This is looking absolutely sick. I'm very, very impressed with the work you guys have done so far and by the looks of it, this will be one of the best looking mods out there further down the road. Good luck with the rest of it!

It is definitely a challenge to not get burnt out But, DeI is a much larger team and is nearing its completion for most of the major elements. This project (C:RoC) is more of a personal passion project that has turned into a big overhaul with the help of Ahiga.

The Sasanian Empire is currently playable in the mod right now. We will be expanding their roster soon. Then, once we get to the new models/textures, we will be making it much more historically accurate.

I thought about making new units for the Sassanid Empire but it might be easier to just adjust unit stats and recruitment for the units already there. I'm not a history buff and I'm an amateur at modding.

I reskinned the Eastern Spearmen to make them more interesting and renamed them to Paighan Spearmen based on the mass levied troops used by the empire there were poorly equipped and badly treated in reality they would not be wearing armor unless they looted better equipped enemies.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Also based the next skin off a Barbarian Invasion unit if I remember correctly, renamed Elite Persian Archers to Kamandaran Archers and gave them some armor. If stats would change they could be heavy or medium archers with their secondaries as spears so they could be used as medium infantry as well. I didn't give them helmets since I couldn't find ones I liked. I think their were other archer units that had armor as good as cataphracts as well.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Parthian Swordsmen can be turned into Sogdian Warriors historically they were highly trained infantry, I'm basing this off the unit in old Barbarian Invasion I just made them basically foot cataphracts with axes none of the other current eastern armors or helmets really impress me.

Those are looking good. This next update I will be adding some unit variation to the east but I haven't had time to get into heavy texture changes at all yet.

I'm also trying to combine this mod with a unit upgrade I've been messing around with that makes it so once you research certain techs it upgrades the weaker levy troops for mainly barbarian tribes so they have a fighting chance against the Romans but it keeps crashing. The premise is once you research chainmail your spear levy and celtic warriors become chosen spearmen and chosen sword band.
