Client Kingdoms

Sometime is seems inevitable to subordinate oneself and make peace by becoming a client kingdom. What actually happens then? I can't see any downsides with doing so. Are there any cosequences at all?

I know that money goes to the master, they are forced to peace with people. But the relationships stays somewhat the same, meaning that it can be easily broken.
