There is another fact for you, per the "general education" we spoke of in the first page: feather structure. Feathers are composed of Beta-keratin and can bend to nearly to a right angle. Beta-keratin is also found in a bird's beak and claws. This same Beta sheet is used by reptiles for their skin, which forms the reptiles' rigid hide. You know that when the same thing is used for flight and tough skin, it must be pretty special.

Another thing about feathers is how each vane “sticks” to another. Feather vanes “stick” together with tiny barbules and hook-lets. Humans were unable to conceive of this concept until 1941 by George de Mestral, a Swiss engineer. A common example of human replication of this hook-and-loop fastener used by Homo sapiens is often called “Velcro”.

Did you know that feathers have a tiny opening in the base of the calamus (the part without vanes)? This only exists when the feather is growing, for a tiny blood supply to the feather which feeds off blood is necessary for the feather's growth. When the feather is fully-grown the opening closes, and the feather is as dead as the white part of your fingernail.
