[WIP] The Spanish Civil War

The Spanish Civil War is quite an interesting but overlooked conflict. It was a clash between the 20th century's two political extremes - Fascism and Communism. Stuck in between was a country in Civil War as people came from across the world to fight for both sides. It was a preview of what World War II was going to look like, with the introduction of new tanks, weapons, planes and military tactics. The German panzers first practiced for the Blitzkriegs across Poland, France and Russia on the fields of Spain. In the air, the Soviets and Axis powers alike both tested new aircraft designs. New tactics like the strategic bombing were also first experimented with. It was a brutal war, but one that is very interesting. This is why we present to you the Spanish Civil War Mod, a sub-mod for The Great War.

It wouldn't be very realistic. Even by the end of WWI the large units that Napoleon uses were obsolete and they were using small squad tactics.

I made a prototype startpos for the Spanish Civil War some years ago. If you'd like that for testing or editing, I'm happy to see if I can dig it up.

Still, I would make one correction:

There needs to be a Startpos mapper and somebody who can skin and model to make the T-26 tanks (I think that'll do for all armor for now) plus make things like berets and Spanish fatigue caps.

Is there any movement on this - would love to see a SCW mod, and the Peninsular Campaign map would be perfect - battles like Jarama and the Ebro offensive would be great. No Pasaran!

Sounds good, and i assume "Spanish Legion" are German troops?

Well, there were about 60,000 German troops on the ground, as well as the Condor Legion air force and large numbers of Italian troops. The Republic had a semi-decent Navy, as well. Italian submarines contributed to the blockade. Really looking forward to this!

Actually, no. The Spanish Legion was an elite Spanish military unit that was supposed to be a copy of the French Foreign Legion. In-fact, Francisco Franco was one of the founding members of the Legion. They were different from the Condor Legion.


Additionally, I have considerations about adding the Condor Legion. I had no idea they had that many ground troops. However, I am having trouble finding a combat uniform for them. It seems most things associated with the CL are either their pilots or their panzers.

The Italians are also going to be serving the Fascists.

There's a nice working T26 tank, albeit in Nationalist colours, rather than Republican, in the recent film El Bosc. Well worth a watch - features a machine gun company from the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, as well as Moroccan Regulares!

Give them mix of spanish uniforms and German WW1 brown uniforms like SA has and WW2 German equipment (belt, chestrig, rifle and hat) would be my suggestion. Or just militia clothing + chestrig and belt
Germany was in middle of re-arming, so perhaps they only got uniform after Spanish Civil had ended and they returned to Spain?

We would like to add T-26 tanks and Panzer I's, but at the moment we don't have a modeler who can make either and we don't have a skinner. We would welcome anybody who wants to help us with this though.
