    Default African faction research thread

This thread is for compiling research on the factions in Africa, such as Egypt(Egypt ruled lands in the near east but they as a culture are African so ive placed them in Africa), the Berber tribes, Nubia etc.
look at the other faction research threads for the guidelines of what to post.

i guess Egypt is the most important faction in Africa and one of the most important powers of the world at that period of time as the starting date of the mod will be almost 170 years after the rise of the new kingdom in Egypt which reaches it's zenith of power under the reign of the pharaoh Thutmose III where the Egyptian empire became as large as it will ever be in the ancient times but his reign ended in 1427 BC and he died in 1425 BC and was successeded by Amenhoteb II and followed by Thutmose IV who should be the ruling pharaoh of Egypt at the starting date of the mod and will be followed by Amenhoteb III in relativley peaceful reigns for both pharaohs yet Egypt was still a super power until the reign of Akhenaten who will cause great troubles in Egypt because he will make a great religious changes (he forbade worshiping of the traditional gods at that time and replaced them with the one god Aton god of the sun) which will cause a great conflict between him and the priests and cause great demise in the power of Egypt

Ethiopia would be Dʿmt, it might have been called Punt by the Egyptians, we don't really know were Punt was, but most historians place it in the Horn of Africa.

Unfortunately D'mt didn't leave a lot of sculptures or pictures, they were heavily influenced by the Yemenese Sabaean kingdom.

Punt as imagined by the Egyptians

I always loved how the Egyptians, who usually only drew one body style, gave the queen of Punt an obese figure. There's also some interesting attention given to facial features, hooked noses, and high bridge. It's an interesting picture. But who knows how accurate. The Europeans went to Asia in the 16th century, but when they draw Asian clothing its often pretty inaccurate.

Ethiopia and Eritrea are are multi-ethnic/racial countries. Historically the main power holders were the Afro-Asiatic
Cushitic and Semitic speakers. Here are some pictures of modern tribes. But keep in mind what modern day tribes look like doesn't necessarily mean what ancient tribes may have looked like.

    Non-Afro-Asiatic people.

Your research is helpful for identifying the ethnicity of some of them, but I would ask you double check the Axumite and south arabian artwork. The Axumite artifact seems to be far away from our timeframe and the same goes for the bronze statue.

The two Yemenese bronzes are from the 6th century BC. About 400 years out of your time frame (however how much did fashion change in that time?). The Sabaens (1200-275 AD)being the oldest historical civilization in Yemen, no one knows the name of the culture that inhabited the region before the 13th century. The Axumite coin is probably from the 3rd century AD. However that's probably about as old as your going to find artwork from that area. And I'd say if in 12th century BC Ethiopia or Yemen you saw a man dressed like those bronze statues, you wouldn't think they were out of place.

You just aren't going to find the kind of stuff you can in Egypt or the Middle East in these areas. There's some cave paintings in the Horn of Africa and Southern Arabia from 3000BC - 1000BC. But most of it is of animals, and the primitive human figures aren't going to shed much light on clothing, weapons, armor, etc.

About the most interesting on is the Bir Hima located in Saudi Arabia on the border with Yemen. Dated to 2500BC-1000BC

Also notice the feather in their hair and the hair style.

Very interesting picture, its hard to make out, are they wearing armor? Is those crests or just a hair style. And they seem to carry scimitars, not the sort of sword you'd imagine for 2000-1000BC.

Of course who knows what they were trying to convey, it could be a combat-bent sword (some men seem to have straight swords), it could be a wooden club similar to this or this. The most likely is probably a reversed type of khopesh, Osprey depicted it as this:

Those are crests, hellenic/roman style. The later Arab armies adopted the styles of the Hellenistic armies.
