Game Crashes

Sorry, I know it sounds very vague but I don't know what information to give you guys. As on of now it sometimes crashes after a battle, sometimes when I go back to RSII after alt+tab-ing and sometimes after I end my turn... I played RSI and RSII before on my old laptop, but I got a new computer last year and tried to play there and this started happening and it forced me to stop playing. Recently I've gotten interested in playing again but I face the same issues I really want to play again since I really love this series and this mod but I don't want to get into it if it keeps doing this and all my efforts lost. I'll try to update you guys with more information regarding when and where it tends to crash.

Update: Yea, it usually crashes when end my turn, alt+tab or when a battle ends.

-I run Windows 7 Home Premium

-I bought the Gold Edition from Steam but on the RSII Launcher I used the RTW.exe, I then tried to run it in RTW-BI.exe but the game contrast (or gamma) is really high so it looks really really bright to the point when I can't see some objects also it still crashes.

Steam can cause problems, but there are solutions.

My Roma Surrectum II install does the same thing, non-steam version. It always happens during battles, and it varies at which point the crash happens. It also does not explain why, I just get "Rome Total War has stopped working" message. I have tried the - show err, but still no explanation. As i have read in other thread you will not always get a show error. Does not really seem like anyone here knows what the deal is. It really sucks because I love playing this mod, but for about a month I have been playing RS 1, which I still love.

Ok I think I figured out my issue. When you go to launch the game, the window that pops up initially, at the bottom next to save and all the other little options there is a text bar. Mine was populated with this

-show_err -nm -movie_cam

Not sure if it has to do with the camera toggle or what, or perhaps a campaign movie?

Only thing is I have not figured out how to fix this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mine crashes as well after the end of battles. Just works fine on the campaign and once i start a battle fight it out, no matter if i win or not, when clicking to get back to the campaign it will crash. I will try to follow some of the solutions above, but I think i pretty correctly installed the game already. It's a strange issue that i had every once and then, but now its happening every battle.

See I have the same problem, but now I am also getting when I load the game up the initial screen black, with this green flutter in the upper left corner.....I have to exit to desktop, and then come back in to get the screen to load. I want to play this mod so bad but I just can't seem to get it to work longer then one battle before it crashes.

ok, so I got the crashing to stop by using the steam install guide. I have a question though.I now have to use stream to launch, so How do I get the options that are in the regular launcher...like high res units, vegetation, and Pre-Marius units? Also, how do I get it to do 1 turn campaign? Thanks for any help in advance.

Edit: 2.5 works flawless, but 2.6 is causing a crash at every battle.....don't know what is up.....the only thing is I put in my own video settings----would that cause this?

I've experienced CTD after battle. I sort of solved this problem by idling 10~15 seconds, then click button to return to campaign. By doing this, chances of getting CTD decreased substantially. Werid, but it works most of the time for me. At least, I wont get CTD after every battle. Now, it's 1-to-4 ration of CTD after battle.

All these are the classic and well known RTW CTDs - they are not Mod-linked.

Alt-tabbing and doing other things whilst playing - never recommended.

Most recommended - disconnect from the internet and turn off Anti-Virus s/w.

Their are so many variables that go into figuring out what causes CTD in RTW. But as mentioned before these crashes are the classic ones from RTW that are both random and even more random.

It's not my solution, I found it on other forum, but it WORKS.

1. get 'Explorer Suite' from http://www.ntcore.com/(freeware)
2. install it
3. make a copy of RomeTW-BI-ALX.exe'
3. right click on 'RomeTW-BI-ALX.exe'
4. choose 'Open with CFF Explorer'
5. in the left tree click on 'File Header'
6. in the right window click on 'click here' in the 'Characteristics' row
7. in the appearing window check the box in the line 'App can handle >2gb address space'
8. click 'OK' - button
9. click on 'save' icon
10. Run the game as usual.

This resolves the memory management problems which causes the after battle CTD.
For me, worked 100%, I'm not having one single CTD.
