War for the lost
Caesarea, winter 1083
The morning after the Siege of Caesarea, when the Prince had woken up from his fall after the Imperial Messenger had arrived, was an interesting one.
The Romans were having a council at the halls, regarding the reconstruction of the city, because it was damaged by the Turks.
The Turks, a nomad tribe from Central Asia, that briefly invaded the Roman Empire, and after being defeated, returned to their homelands, to inform other hordes to invade...but that's a lot of generations later. Their Arab vassals, became independent Sheiks and Emirs, ready to be subjugated by stronger sovereignities nearby. They were destroyed...by a heroic prince of the Empire and his small army of Romans. All their effort in looting, destroying and raping was undone by a man, whose uncle was captured by these barbarians and got converted to one of them. He had to kill him, unfortunately.
The late rider was also part of the council, and the first one to speak:
''Your father knew of your effective, quick campaigns so he sent me, I rode as fast I could but I couldn't make it...''he stopped, and waited for an answer
But the prince stood in his chair, still stunned by the events of the previous night, thinking of the words he wispered in his uncle's ear:
''For Nikolaos''
One could think of it as funny, but actually it is tragic. The Basileus' brother was slain, and his only adult heir, wass accussed of being a kinslayer. He surely was a Kingslayer, personally killing two in personal combat.
''Your father informed my what to do in case I couldn't make it in time. We will spread the rumour that you found him dead by one of your Guards, who will be hanged tomorrow''
''Who killed him?'' asked an angered Prince
And before the man had a chance to answer, John continued:''I did, I even whispered in his ear before I drove the knife into his heart <<For Nikolaos>>, an innocent man will not be hanged for one of my father's schemes to keep my name clean. I occupied the place, released the captives, and I will execute a loyal Roman? Reveal your identity to me. '' the Prince ordered , really angered by the intrigues his father wanted him involved in.
''I am Theotokios Olaskos, Hand of the Emperor, Megas Doukas of Thesalonica and I demand that you agree to your father's demands.''
Everyone in the Council, from the Prince to Basileios, was puzzled, and waited to see if the Prince would succumb to his father's demands.
''It seems your trip has been fruitless, Lord Theotokios, for I, am going out in the balcony, and I will tell them the truth, about Nikolaos, and my father's scheming nature.''
''Good, you are strong, but rejecting means you are a traitor to the Empire.I give you a day to reconsider.''
''A traitor? I am protecting the Empire from the likes of you and father! Don't bother waiting a day, father needs you, Basileios, escort Lord Theotokios off the city.Farewell.''
''And what will you tell them? That you are a Kinslayer?Or maybe that you are a Kingslayer?Who knows, maybe both?''Theotokios asked before leaving
''Both, I am an honest and honourable person. Also, I forbade sacking because we would search for him when the siege was completed.''
And so Theotokios and Basileios were heading for the exit and the Prince for the balcony.
Meanwhile, in Durazzo
The Emperor was learning about the realm's affairs when a soldier entered.
''Milord, Exotrochos has landed in Europe, 4 divisions of Vardariotai have met him, and 2 of Spear Militiamen, have approached him.''
'Good job, have you learnt anything about the Princess?'' the Emperor asked
''She continues going west.''
''Good. We are the strongest faction, we don't have any debts and we are ready for another campaign. What could go wrong?''
