    War for the lost
    Caesare
    a, winter 1083
The morning after the Siege of Caesarea, when the Prince had woken up from his fall after the Imperial Messenger had arrived, was an interesting one.
The Romans were having a council at the halls, regarding the reconstruction of the city, because it was damaged by the Turks.
The Turks, a nomad tribe from Central Asia, that briefly invaded the Roman Empire, and after being defeated, returned to their homelands, to inform other hordes to invade...but that's a lot of generations later. Their Arab vassals, became independent Sheiks and Emirs, ready to be subjugated by stronger sovereignities nearby. They were destroyed...by a heroic prince of the Empire and his small army of Romans. All their effort in looting, destroying and raping was undone by a man, whose uncle was captured by these barbarians and got converted to one of them. He had to kill him, unfortunately.

The late rider was also part of the council, and the first one to speak:
''Your father knew of your effective, quick campaigns so he sent me, I rode as fast I could but I couldn't make it...''he stopped, and waited for an answer
But the prince stood in his chair, still stunned by the events of the previous night, thinking of the words he wispered in his uncle's ear:
    ''For Nikolaos''
One could think of it as funny, but actually it is tragic. The Basileus' brother was slain, and his only adult heir, wass accussed of being a kinslayer. He surely was a Kingslayer, personally killing two in personal combat.
''Your father informed my what to do in case I couldn't make it in time. We will spread the rumour that you found him dead by one of your Guards, who will be hanged tomorrow''
''Who killed him?'' asked an angered Prince
And before the man had a chance to answer, John continued:''I did, I even whispered in his ear before I drove the knife into his heart <<For Nikolaos>>, an innocent man will not be hanged for one of my father's schemes to keep my name clean. I occupied the place, released the captives, and I will execute a loyal Roman? Reveal your identity to me. '' the Prince ordered , really angered by the intrigues his father wanted him involved in.

''I am Theotokios Olaskos, Hand of the Emperor, Megas Doukas of Thesalonica and I demand that you agree to your father's demands.''
Everyone in the Council, from the Prince to Basileios, was puzzled, and waited to see if the Prince would succumb to his father's demands.
''It seems your trip has been fruitless, Lord Theotokios, for I, am going out in the balcony, and I will tell them the truth, about Nikolaos, and my father's scheming nature.''
''Good, you are strong, but rejecting means you are a traitor to the Empire.I give you a day to reconsider.''
''A traitor? I am protecting the Empire from the likes of you and father! Don't bother waiting a day, father needs you, Basileios, escort Lord Theotokios off the city.Farewell.''
''And what will you tell them? That you are a Kinslayer?Or maybe that you are a Kingslayer?Who knows, maybe both?''Theotokios asked before leaving
''Both, I am an honest and honourable person. Also, I forbade sacking because we would search for him when the siege was completed.''
And so Theotokios and Basileios were heading for the exit and the Prince for the balcony.
    Meanwhile, in Durazzo
The Emperor was learning about the realm's affairs when a soldier entered.
''Milord, Exotrochos has landed in Europe, 4 divisions of Vardariotai have met him, and 2 of Spear Militiamen, have approached him.''

'Good job, have you learnt anything about the Princess?'' the Emperor asked
    ''She continues going west.''
''Good. We are the strongest faction, we don't have any debts and we are ready for another campaign. What could go wrong?''

    Royal Wedding
    Northwest of Constantinople, Summer 1084
The men on the watchtower were having a game of dices, while discussing their experiences on women.
''Mate, I've been with so many of them that I can understand them'' one of them said after rolling the dices, he was tall, with blue eyes and shoulder long brown hair
''By your looks, Emmanouel, I don't find it difficult to lay with many, but you say you understand them, and I could now claim to be God, and both of us would be liars.'' responded the other one, a greyhair.
''Well, my first one was in the capital, a decade ago.She was...''
Before he finished talking, the older guard stood up and stared at something.
''When was the last time an army has passed by here boy?'' he asked while searching for his weapons
''Two years ago, the Emperor's army, why do you ask?''
''Stand up and look behind you.''
He turned and he saw a host, a big one with a lot of cavalry.
''You get yourself a horse, go west 100 paces, and if something happens to me, flee to Durazzo, the Emperor's current location.''ordered the older man.
The young man left, and the other approached the army. A band of around 10 horsemen approached him. One stepped forward, pulling off his helmet.
He was middle aged, with a moustache and brown hair, as most Romans were back then.
''Who are you and what do you seek here, near Constantinople?'' the old guard asked
''I am Evangelos Exotrochos, and I seek to camp here before my upcoming campaign against Hungary. Will you allow me to camp here?''
Upon learning that he faced one of the most powerful men in the Empire, the soldier was terrified. He stammered:
    ''O...Of...of course milord...I...I am ... honored.''
''Good, thank you soldier, and tell the man hiding over there to come back.''
    ''Of course.''

    Meanwhile, in Hungary
''Stop the march'' ordered a female voice
''As you wish princess. Guards, HALT!''
''Georgios, what is this over there?''
    ''A village, princess''
    ''That's where we are staying''
In the village, a man in the inn murmured.
    ''Another princess?''
''Is there another one?'' Anna asked
''In the village next stadium to the west. From Sicily.''
    ''Is she beautiful?''
''Not like you, but she's fair.''
''That's all I needed, Georgios, we are leaving. Brother needs a wife.''

    Hungary, Winter 1084
''Good morning Princess, it seems the rumours about you were true''
    ''What rumours?''
''Of your beauty of course. Do you want to negotiate here?''
''Yes, what does your father wish?''
''He wishes trade between our people, an alliance, and to accept his gift of 1000 denarii.''
    ''We accept.''
''He also wishes for you to marry Prince John, the Turksbane, the Sword of Christendom.''
''I have heard so much about him. I would be honored.''
    ''It is settled then.''

    Meanwhile,Somewhere
    ''We are almost there!''

Yeah, my mother tongue is the Greek, and there are many differences.Glad you liked it!It will be interesting because the commander is one of the major characters, even though you haven't seen much from him (yet).

    For Rome
    Sofia,Summer 1085 AD
In the darkness, there is always the fear of assasination in a noble's mind. But that's not always his greatest concern. The bedroom was dark, with only two torches in the man's side. The man suddenly woke up, sweaty, and propably still exhausted due to a lack of sleep and a lot of work. He grabbed the towel that was near the torch, and, before he could use it, the castle bells started to ring. A man in heavy armour, with facial characteristics of the people who invaded from the steppes, started shouting in his heavy voice. In a minute, the walls were manned and the noble was dressed. He ordered something and a man entered the room, accompanied by the two guards.
''What is going on?'' the noble asked
''The Greek heretics from the south have laid siege to the castle'' the man answered. You could see he was terrified, for he was almost stuttering.
''Why are you stuttering? You are my architect, you built these walls. I need you to remain calm for I may seek your counsel.''
''My lord, their overwhelming numbers leave us only two choices. We can either wait for the King or the Prince to send reinforcements, or we kill as many as possible when they decide to launch an assault.''
''The King thinks I am way too influential and that I may try to usurp the throne, so we will take as many Greeks with us as possible.''
''But, Lord Istvan, the Prince has been your best friend, won't he come to save you?''
''He will try, but he won't make it. King would prefer to lose a castle and an army if it brought my demise.''
    In the Roman Camp
    ''Milord'' a soldier said
''Yes, Roman, what do you wish for me to know?'' the general asked
''Actually, I would prefer it if you instructed us on the siege equipment.''
''Oh yes, I was consumed with preparing and securing our camp that I forgot all about it. I want a ram for the gates, and 4 triplets of ladders''
''It will take around 3 months, we will be able to reclaim the castle by winter.''
    ''Good''
    Meanwhile,in Caesarea
''My lord, your bride has arrived.''Basileios told John
''Dear friend, how many times have I told you that when we are alone you will call me John?'' John asked him
    ''I'm sorry friend, it's just a habit''
''A bad one, I must say...''
And as he finished the sentence, the doors opened and Lady Matilda entered with her handmaidens. A look of surprise and an open mouth was John's only reaction. Even though his sister was a lot more beautiful, he hadn't seen her in 5 years. 5 years of war, in which he had the chance to whore and get drunk, he only did the second while waiting patiently for his sister to find him a suitable princess that he could marry. She had completed her part. He was astonished.
''Am I a disappointment, my lord?'' Matilda asked, taking her
kerchief away, revealing long blond hair.
''I think I should be the one to ask such a question, my lady.'' John replied, pulling of his helmet, revealing beautiful curly hair. ''We were thinking of reclaiming Adana for the family, but it seems that will need to wait. Basileios, arrange for both an Orthodox and a Catholic priest to come for the marriage. I will escort the lady and her handmaidens to their chambers.''
Basileios gave a disapproving nod, but left after John gave him a reassuring nod.
''We are both Christians after all, aren't we?'' John said to Matilda
    ''I suppose'' Matilda answered
''Do you want this marriage, my lady?'' he asked
''You are famous in the West, my Prince, they call you the Defender of Christendom, because of your achievements against the Muslims. I was deeply honored when Anna offered it to me. They also say you are very chivalrous and you would have been a Knight if you were a Catholic.''
''Glad to know it wasn't a forced marriage. Here is your room my lady.I will see you later.''
It wasn't an expensive feast. Nor a very cheap one though. Every one drunk and were happy, except for the groom. He knew what even one bottle could do, and he was satisfied with water and bread. After the feast was over, they got to their chambers to spend their wedding night. John had arranged with Basileios to keep the couple alone. They were kissing as they moved close to their bed, when she pushed him down. She then started undressing, revealing a beautiful thin body. Then it was his turn. His muscles were visible even in the darkness. She moved above him as they kissed, and then, within a second, he changed the positions. He was touching her beautiful blonde hair while getting inside her.
    South of Caesarea, Winter 1085
He was standing in his chair, inside the tent. His mind was faraway, in summer, when he spent endless nights and mornings on bed with his lady. And it all ended with the coming of autumn. His father, Basileus Alexios had commanded him to retake Adana. Then, his best friend, Basileios, entered the tent. He found John's armour in the bed.
    ''What's wrong John?'' he asked
''Why? Why did it have to happen now? He sents me to the Emir of Adana, to take his land, for the Empire. Can't it wait a little more?''
''Think of it as a way to secure her and your child.'' Basileios replied with a smile
The Prince stood up, his reaction was the one he had during his first meeting with his wife.
''She gave birth?'' he asked, still very shocked
Basileios gave an assuring nod and John procceded to hug him.
''Boy or girl? Not that it matters, to me.'' the father asked
''It's a little princess that was hiding in Matilda's belly.''
''Have you come up with any name? I and Matilda decided you would be the godfather, remember?''
    ''Yes, Malha.''
''It is settled then. I will have to castrate a few men it seems.''
''If she takes after her mother, of course. Otherwise...''
''I thought you were a friend, Basileios.'' he said and the two friends shared a cup of wine
    Meanwhile, in Sofia's walls
''Kill them all. Reclaim this castle in the name of the Emperor!'' Evangelos shouted
''Charge!!! One last time my friends.'' Many fell during the charge, both Romans and Hungarians, but the first were winning. It was then, that the two generals met in battle.
''Who is the name of the man I'm sending to Hell tonight, for you look like a noble?'' the Hungarian general, Istvan, asked?
''I am Evangelos Exotrochos, son of Stavros, and a servant of the only true Emperor.'' the Roman replied as he unseathed his sword.
The first to attack was the Hungarian. They were of the same age, so no one had the advantage of youth or experience. The Hungarian's ferocious attacks drove Evangelos back. But, before Istvan could hit him, the Roman parried with his shield, and made a big cut in his enemy's sword hand. A terrified Istvan, then drove his shield in Evangelos' face, forcing him down. He prepared his shield for an attack, but before that, Evangelos kicked him in his genitals. Istvan fell backwards, Evangelos rose, and gave him the Gift of Mercy. All around them, the battle had ended in a Pyrrhic Roman victory. Sofia was theirs, but at a terrible loss.

As you can see, I update once in a month(a lot of matches, incoming horde of exams and daily excursions helped) and I'm not good in siege battles.
Also, how can I get rid of the alcoholic trait?

Indeed, but sometimes traits can make for interesting twists in the tale, or so I have learnt. Use it to add some flavour, maybe? Tis up to you, of course.

Default Re: The Restoration of the Comnenoi (Vanilla M2TW)

    Bucharest
    Summer 1086, Adana
An army had arrived in Adana. You could see them preparing their camp. Some putting up the tents, others in the barrickades and, some in the watchtowers. In the center, there was a big tent, the general's tent for sure. The man had a reputation. He was known as the Turksbane, the Sword of Christendom, the Kingslayer (he had killed two in personal combat, one of whom was his uncle) and, he was so chivalrous, that, according to most, he would be knighted in the West. But even the bravest is defeated by love. He is sad since he left Caesarea, and his pregnant wife. He laid in his bed, having put his armour away, he wanted to rest for a little bit. But then a man entered, an old one. It was his mentor, Stavros.
''Thinking of her again, John?'' he asked the Prince
''Yes, what news do you bring me, Stavros?'' he stood up, waiting for news, any news.
''Both good and bad news. The Dynatoi want Anna to talk to the Germans and an earthquake has occured in Durazzo.52 civilians and 5 troops perished.''
The Prince looked at his mentor. He saw an emotionless man, in his sixties, with grey hair and a beard of the same colour. He looked at his prince with his blue eyes, waiting for the question to come.
''Is my father alright?'' John asked, staring at Stavros. The two pairs of eyes met, John's light blue eyes and Stavros' dark blue ones.
''He is just fine, as is his Hand.'' he assured John.
''I don't care about the worm, I only care about the Basileus. And what are the good news?'' the Prince asked Stavros
''The only good news are that there is no need to assault. In one and a half year it will be over. And after that she will come here, with you.''
''Good, I wouldn't like it if I was the only one to see his wife again.I need these men if the Roman Empire is to be restored.''
''You speak of the Empire as if it is like in Octavian's times, and I'm not talking about the territories Rome owned then, only. The Rome you think of, exists only in your dreams, John.''
    Meanwhile, in Caesarea
Lady Matilda was nursing Malha when a man entered her room. He ignored her little nudity, and spoke to her.
''Milady, a diplomat from the Egyptian Sultanate has arrived. What should we do?'' he asked
Matilda shouted something in Norman, and a young woman came in, her servant. She told her something, and after she covered her exposed to greedy watchers area, she gave her the little princess. Then, she turned her attention to the man.
''I will go to the halls, go and escort him there where I will meet him.''
''As you wish, milady.'' the man said and hastily left.
Five minutes later the gates of the halls opened, and Matilda was sitting in the chair that served as the throne of her uncle-in-law a year ago. A short man entered, accompanied by slave servants. He had the characteristics of an Egyptian, thick moustache, skin darker than that of the Romans and a strange hat with robes. He stepped forward, bowed, and introduced himself.
''I am Fahim, sent by the noble Sultan of Egypt.''
''You are welcome Fahim, ambassador of the Sultanate of Egypt. Why were you sent here instead of Constantinople or near Adana where the Prince is located?''
He was caught off-guard by a woman and he took a minute to think before talking.
''I..I also wanted to see if the rumours of your beauty were true. And I am a happy man to have seen you.'' Matilda knew the real reason. Women were considered weak in Islam and that was why he avoided John.
''Our Sultan has watched your war against the Turks closely, and now that it is over he would like for our people to trade. He also wishes for you to give us 220 florins as a token of your good will.''
''I think it would be better if our people were to trade without Rome or Egypt having to pay extra florins.''
He once again stopped to think. He thought if talking to the Prince was a better choice after all.
''I agree. Is there anything else that Rome wants of the Sultan?''Fahim asked, hoping she had no more demands
''Actually, there is. How can we trade if we don't know were your ports are?I offer you a map with the most important cities, castles and ports of the Empire in exchange for one of yours.''
He stopped for a third time. That woman had overcame him. The only thing he wondered about now was how would he be punished.
    ''I agree'' he said
''Good, that is all the Empire wants from your people, you are free to go, unless you want something more than that.''
And that is how the clever princess won a lot for the Empire just by diplomacy.
    Meanwhile, near Bucharest
An army had stopped marching. A horse man rode towards the head of the army, where you could see a man in heavy plate armour, surely a noble and the general.
''Milord, we can not reach the village but we can make our selves visible, to lower their morale.''
''No, since the village can not be conquered now, we will camp behind that hill, so we are not seen by the village.'' the general explained
''So we will do a sneak attack, Lord Exotrochos?'' the rider asked
''Yes, you saw how many we lost in Sofia, I can not afford for them to build even the lowest pallisade.''
''As you wish, Lord Exotrochos.''the rider told and left for the regiments in the back of the army. If he shouted, the villagers would hear him.
They moved behind the hill. Not a single tent was visible from the village. But some knew their doom was coming.
    Winter 1086, Bucharest
They appeared in numbers. Hundrends of horse archers, appearing in every side of the village. And from the main road, infantry men and archers were approaching. The villagers were taken completely by surprise. The chief, Ermanes, put his armour and lead his men. He knew it was a lost cause. He had no cavalry. But he also knew that his men would kill double the amount of Romans if it would save their families.
''Don't fight for me, me, I'll be dead in an hour and so will most of you. But think of your wives. They will suffer at their greedy hands while you feel nothing and your corpse rots. Kill for them.''
Throught the speech, arrows landed around them, killing most. The few that were left were killed by the Romans. 315 men from Bucharest died and they took with them 88 out of the 478 Romans and Slavs.
''Lord Exotrochos, will you allow us to rape their women, kill the men and throw the children out of the houses?'' the second in charge asked.
''Of course not. We are Romans. We are better than them. We don't rape and kill children. Just loot the treasury of the chief's house.'' Evangelos rejected his second in charge demands. The man gave a disapproving nod, and left.
    Meanwhile, in Adana
Basileios entered John's tent, only to find a puzzled Stavros.
''What is going on, Lord Stavros?''
''I am no Lord and I have a question for you: Where is John?''

    Battles everywhere
    Summer 1087, Roman Army Camp
Lord Exotrochos was in his tent, observing a map, trying to think what his next move would be. He was outside a castle, called Bran, the Magyar stronghold in the Carpathian mountains. It guarded the Prince of Hungary inside. But the King had sent a relief force under a noble he had adopted, called Keresztes Keblovszki.
''Lord Exotrochos.'' a soldier entered, seeking to tell him something
''What is it, soldier? Has the Prince decided to attack?''
''No, milord. But the relief force has done a forced march to reach us, so in the winter, they will be closer. I suggest we leave, Lord.''
''That's what I want. Let them come, and when they do, Hungary's last hope will die with them. They will die to protect a castle with 30 men and their Prince. I have a lot of horse archers and I don't intend to use them in siege battles, where they would fall like flies. Tell the men to act like it's a normal siege, but when the first snows fall, we will engage with the Hungarian Army.Understood?''
    ''Yes milord.''

    Meanwhile, Adana
Stavros and Basileios were still in John's tent, waiting for him when the bells rung. The Armenian Emir of Adana, Fadlullah was coming to engage the Romans. In the same time, John appeared and rallied his men. He was already on his warhorse, with his armour, when Basileios spotted him.
''Where the hell have you been?'' Basileios asked him while putting on his armour.
''I wanted it to end faster, so I could meet her again. For that reason, I poisoned their wells and they were forced out. HORSE ARCHERS ON THE LEFT, INFANTRY FORM A LINE BEHIND THE ARCHERS, BODYGUARDS ON ME! FOR ROME!!Dress faster, you are my sword bearer damn it.'' John answered.
''I never thought you were a good archer.'' Basileios made fun of his friend while mounting his horse.
''It seems I am though. BODYGUARDS CHARGE THEIR CAVALRY!!! INFANTRY MOVE FORWARD 10 PACES, ARCHERS PROVIDE SUPPORTING FIRE!!!''
And all went according to plan. The Armenians were massacred and the Christians were one step closer to Antioch and the Holy Lands.
''Occupy the place and bring me the Emir's treasury.'' John commanded after the ''fight''. He collected 64 florins from the Emir.
''And he didn't even provide me with enough money to get 48 replacement Romans for the ones I lost today.'' he thought.

Winter 1087, North of the Venice-Rome border in Ragusa-Durazzo
The Basileus was in his tent, waiting for his trusted advisor to come. And then he entered. Theotokios Olaskos, the Megas Doukas of Thesalonica.
''What is the reason of this?'' Alexius asked, showing his friend a chest with 500 florins.
''Ah, yes, your daughter convinced the Germans to trade with us and to share our maps.''
''That's my girl, now, let's discuss strategy. We are outnumbered by the Venetians...''
Meanwhile, in a battlefield covered by snow
Two armies were in a battle. One was in the open field, the other in the woods. The latter had a detachment of cavalry as reinforcements, which the first army's cavalry charged at.The first were the Romans, and the latter, the Hungarians. And while the arrows flied above the armies, the two heavy armed groups clashed. The Roman group, that charged, had less members, but the impact of their charge was so big, that the numbers were now even. Two nobles distinguished themselves that day.

''Well, well, well, it seems I've caught the Roman general, the killer of my friend, Istvan. You're Evangelos Exotrochos.''
''And you are Kalman, son of Lazlo, and Prince of Hungary. I'm proud to fight you, boy.''
''And I will be proud when I spit on your corpse.''
The young Prince charged. But Lord Exotrochos was an experienced fighter. He parried Kalman's attacks easily, and suddenly, he counter attacked the Prince. Kalman was unable to withstand the Roman's assaults and fell. All around them, the fighting was done, and the Romans watched as their leader fought the young Prince. Kalman tried to stand up, and, to his surprise, the Roman allowed him to do so. He once again charged Evangelos, but this time the latter was less merciful. He parried, and stroke him so hard, his sword broke in two.
''Would you like the Gift of Mercy? It would help you meet your friend earlier.'' Evangelos told and drove the sword deep in his heart.

''Have the horse archers ended the battle with my foot soldiers?'' Evangelos asked
''Yes lord, the relief force is routed, most of them killed. But their general, Keres-something Keblov-something escaped.''

''Seems their new prince is trapped in Bran. Sent Kalman's body to his father so he can properly bury it. The prisoners will clean the battlefield and after that, send a ransom request to the new prince in Bran, the place we will assault next year.''
    ''As you wish milord.''

    For the Empire
    Summer 1088, Adana
The Prince was happy again. After he captured Adana a year ago, he met his daughter, and his wife. His daughter was almost three, already walking. He was with her, helping her pronounce the few words she knew. Then, Basileios entered, with a big smile, ready to announce something. John stood up, and turned to face his friend and swordbearer.
''Boy or girl?'' John asked, waiting for his friend to tell him,''not that it matters, as long as it is healthy''
''Boy, what will he be named?''
''The name can wait, where are they?'' he asked
''Up the stairs, then turn right past the statue of the Emperor on the first room.''
''Thank you.'' he said as he gave him Malha. Basileios was surprised.''You are the godfather, after all!''
He runned all the way, and entered the room. He saw two doctors and his wife.
''Where is my boy?'' he asked
''Here'' Matilda handed it over after nursing him a little.''And what will his name be?''
    ''Vlasios'' John said.

    A Week later, in Bran
The Romans had immediatel stormed the castle after the Battle of Bran was won. The few Hungarian defenders were quickly overcome by the Romans, only killing a handful. Now, Evangelos Exotrochos, sat where two Princes of Hungary sat before him. Both of which had fallen by his sword. Evangelos had ordered that only the Prince's treasury was looted, which gave 415 florins, enough to replace the 15 men lost in the siege. That's when a messenger arrived, with the Imperial Seal.
''What news does it contain, messenger?''
    ''Good ones''
    ''I hope so''
    ''Dear Roman Lord,
This message has been sent to you to inform you of our dynasty's security. A boy has been born to Prince John and Lady Matilda, named Vlasios. He will one day become Emperor after his grandfather's and father's reigns end. When Lord Evangelos Exotrochos, your Prince and I, your Emperor, end our campaigns, a triumph will be held in the Capital, in honour of the new lands of the Empire and the birth of a Comnenus.
    Your Emperor,
    Alexius of the Comnenoi''
''Good, time for more lands for the Empire, I am leaving, an army is near the borders. They must be dealt with.''

    Meanwhile, near Ragusa
''Are you a fool Alexius? It will be a complete disaster. The Venetians will destroy our cavalry based force.''
''We will have to wait until Winter, to see if you are right, Theotokios.''
''For the sake of your grandson, don't do it!Do not move by Ragusa, they will be provoked and they will attack us!''

    Winter 1088, Adana
Most of the garrison of the castle was leaving, with the reinforcements from Cyprus and Caesarea. But not all were happy. Basileios insisted that the army camp wouldn't have good prostitutes and even John himself, didn't want to leave his children and wife. But his father commanded him to take Antioch while the Egyptians were distracted with Acre.
''My love, I don't have a choice.'' John said, trying to calm her.''Stop crying, please, don't make this any harder than it already is.''
''You had a choice, and you made it, but please, don't leave me again after this war. If you leave again, I will come with you. I will bring Vlasios and Malha with me as well if it's needed.''
''You don't know my father as I do. He won't let me stay idle when I have that much of an army. You know I would love to stay here, with you, but I can't.''
''Farewell, my lady, I will see you soon.'' he said, then he mounted his horse and left.
''John, maybe we can wait..'' Basileios suggested
''No, it will become worse if we wait.'' he said.
The Prince's eyes were able to hold, but his heart wasn't. The march to Antioch, had begun.

    Meanwhile, near Ragusa
The Roman army was smaller, but, unlike the Venitian one, was combined and was cavalry based. It was also led by Alexius A' Comnenus, the Basileus, while the majority of the Venitians were led by a Patrician without any combat ability, called Benintendi. The reinforcements from Ragusa however, were led by a relative of the Doge, Barbus Selvio.

''Theotokios, take half our horse archers and hit their right side while I take the other half and hit their left side. After we are done with them, then we will hit the reinforcements.'' Alexius revealed his battle plan to his trusted friend, Theotokios Olaskos
''Good plan, but what about our foot soldiers?'' Theotokios asked
''The archers will be in front of our infantry in a line, and if need be, they will provide supporting fire for the cavalry and infantry.''
''I never thought strategy was so easy.''
''Because it is not. You just need to take advantage of your advantages and exploit your enemies' weaknesses. Now, for example, Venice is very strong in melee combat, so we must not allow them to reach our lines. We, on the other hand, have very good horse archers and you will see their usefulness today. Now go, dispatch my orders on each division's officers, I will meet you in battle.'' Alexius concluded.
When the Basileus got out of his tent, he saw the army perfectly arranged, exactly as he wanted it. He got on his horse, and gave a speech:
''Men of the Empire. You wonder why you aren't with your families, I will tell you why. Because if you were now with your families, in three years at most, you would see them raped and killed by greedy merchants. Would you like that? I would not. So I decided it is best to bring the war to their homes. But we are not greedy. We do not rape or throw children off the walls. So now let's go and fight, not for me, but for the Empire.''

''Alexius, their main army, the one led by the Patrician is aproaching.''Theotokios informed the Basileus of the enemy movement
''Good, take your men and go and block out the sun for me please. I will go and do the same with my men.''
Ten minutes later, the slow infantry based Venetian army was destroyed by the arrows of the fast moving horse archers of the Roman Empire. That's when a rider approached the Emperor.
''My Emperor. Lord Theotokios Olaskos sent me to give you some good news. Patrician Benintendi has fallen by a charge of Lord Olaskos and his bodyguards.''
''Thank you, messenger. Tell Theotokios that I will reward with 100 florins the man who killed the Patrician.''
''Of course milord. Also, Lord Olaskos now moves towards the reinforcements, to weaken them until you arrive.''
''Thank you once again for your loyal service to the Empire.MEN, LET'S GO! MORE VENETIANS ARE WAITING FOR US!''

The reinforcements were taken care of even faster. Barbus Selvo was amongst the Venitians who tried to run. He was captured by the Emperor's cavalrymen and brought to him for questioning.

''You Greek dog. The Doge will come and kill you all.'' It seemed as Barbus wasn't very cooperative.
''If you want to live, give us information about your country. And not about Ragusa, we know she is empty.''Alexius demanded
''I know as much as you do. I haven't been in Venice for years.''
''Too bad,you could have lived.''Theotokios said
    ''The Doge will pay, please.''
''I'm sorry. You better die like this than see your family raped and killed.'' Alexius said, and with one blow took his head.
''Kill the rest. We can not afford to face them again.I am not the chivalrous John. But still, occupy Ragusa.''

Default Re: The Restoration of the Comnenoi (Vanilla M2TW)

    A strategos has fallen
    Summer 1089, Central Europe
Two noble ladies were talking. About diplomacy. They wore their nation's dresses, and the one from Rome was dominating in the conversation. She offered the other princess something to which she accepted and added:
''The Kingdom of Denmark accepts your offer of trading and exchanging our knowledge of the world, but I want to ask you something.''
''Of course, Lady Ingrid. What is it that you want to know?''
''In the West, your brother is well known. You know, they call him the Orthodox Knight, the Defender of Christendom. I am an admirer of his, Anna. How is he doing? Is he fine?'' she asked don't turning her gaze from Anna ''You know that if he falls, you will become the Queen.''
''I won't. My future husband will be, though. And John is fine. Now, excuse me, I have to leave.''

Meanwhile, outside the walls of Antioch
The Prince was in his tent, when Stavros entered. He was distracted, surely thinking of his wife and children, so former Lord Exotrochos had to call him.
''Sorry, Lord Stavros, what is it?'' John said, turning to see his mentor.
''We can not start the siege this month, and I am no Lord, Prince.''

''You were though, now your son holds the title, though. I am sure you haven't come only to inform me of something I already knew.''
''Yes, the siege will last four and a half years.'' Stavros told, and he watched his ward's face turn to one of shock and terror
''What? I... I can't stay here four and a half year. This time next year, I will be assaulting the city. Antioch won't seperate me from my family for such a long time. We also need to secure it as fast as possible, because it is were one of the five Patriarchs should reside.''
''Also, your father has left Ragusa and is moving north.''

''What is the fool thinking? He is going straight to Venice. I can't say though, he always liked money. Do we know anything about your son?'' he asked, turning his gaze to his old mentor, seeing him lowering his head and crying like a little child.''What...what happened? Calm down and tell me.''
''He...he fell in the battle which would decide the fate of Budapest.'' Stavros told, and when he finished he sat in John's bed, still crying.

''And so ends the Invasion of Hungary... I will arrange for his burial in Nicaea. But who will lead the army?''
''Alexius has adopted a man in your name, Nikeforos, my son's second in command, until he marries him to Anna.''
''And that will secure his loyalty. Because he couldn't marry Anna to Evangelos due to the age difference, he had Nikeforos kill him.''

''And he did it after my son killed the general, Denes Marton, because he couldn't fight both of them. At least it was a Roman victory.'' Stavros said

''But at what cost?'' John made a rhetorical question

    Winter 1089, North of Ragusa
The Emperor was discussing tactics with Theotokios and Taticius when an exhausted messenger arrived. His letter had the Prince's Seal, so he immediately got it from the messenger's hands and ordered him to leave. After reading for a moment, his eyes widened for a second, but then he was calm again. Theotokios couldn't hold his curiosity any longer so he asked:
''What does the letter inform you of, Alexius?''
''A Muslim priest has called a Jihad in Ctesiphon, renamed Baghdad by the heathens.'' Alexius informed his trusted friends and retainers of the Jihad, seeing their reactions. Both were surprised, mainly because it was not called on Constantinople, the capital of the Roman Empire.
''Thank God. It is not Constantinople and for the infighting between the Emir of Ctesiphon and the Egyptian Sultan. John can take advantage of it.''Theotokios said

''He can't. Don't blame his honour this time, but the siege of Antioch is progressing very slowly. He will attack in the Summer of the New Year and proceed after that.''
''As you wish, Alexius. What about this army?'' Theotokios asked, seeing Alexius smile ''We will coordinate with my soon to be son in law Nikeforos, he has found the Doge of Venice.''

Default Re: The Restoration of the Comnenoi (Vanilla M2TW)

    Restoring a Patriarchate
Summer 1090, Out of the walls of Zagreb
The Roman Army was out of Zagreb, led by Emperor Alexius Comnenus himself. It was a moment that would pass on the history books, and the men were already calling Alexius ''New Justinian'', after the Roman Emperor that had lived 5 centuries ago, the man who made the
Mediterranean Sea a Roman Lake again for a small period of time, the man who reconquered Rome and Italy. He was proud to be called New Justinian, as would be any Emperor. He was waiting for his retainers, Theotokios Olaskos, Taticius and Omeros, his biographer. Omeros arrived first, ready to record anything his liege commanded him. He was observing Alexius appearance, because- who knows?- it might be important for the people of the future to know, with his green eyes. He was a young man, in his early twenties, given to the Emperor by Theotokios. He had curly dark hair without any sign of beard or moustache. While he was recording Alexius' appearance, Theotokios Olaskos and Tacitus entered the tent. The Emperor ordered the 2 latter to sit.
''So, my friends, I want to know about the state of affairs in the Empire before we talk about Zagreb, Theotokios, tell me what has happened.'' Alexius told. He was in a good mood after the death of the only man who would, according to him, challenge his authority, Evangelos Exotrochos.
''As I told you, the plot has succeded, and the army is led by Nikeforos Abalantes, Evangelos' second in command and murderer. Nikeforos won a battle without any casualties against a small Hungarian army, led by a noble by the name of Peter Feher.'' Theotokios said. He knew that this small battle decided the fate of Budapest and the Hungarian King.
''Good, what else?'' Alexius asked him to continue. The news as far were good, the Restoration was a step closer with Hungary's destruction.
'' Two detachments of horse archers are now leaving Constantinople to join John's campaign of the Holy Lands as a reward that Princess Anna managed to get map information and trade rights from Prague, Poland. The worst news being least, a flash flood has occured near Bran, without casualties.''

''Since we can afford it, pay the locals for their loss of land.'' Alexius told and continued ''what about us? What forces are in Zagreb?''
''Zagreb itself is garissoned with an infantry based force, except for their general, a relative of the Doge, Alessandro Selvo. There is also a small detachment of infantry. We could start the siege next month, and in a year, during the assault they would be willing to reinforce Alessandro.'' Taticius informed Alexius.
''No no no. King Agamemnon of Mycenae did the same thing 2500 years ago, and would have lost to Hector if Achilles wasn't there to save him.'' all three of them turned to see Omeros speaking, he turned to the Emperor and continue ''Next month, milord, I suggest you attack the reinforcing army so the garrison comes to their aid. Then you can use the horse archers you have to destroy Venice's army.'' when he finished, he bowed and stepped back, to let the others speak.
''You should be a commander, not a biographer! That's a great idea! Gentlemen, his idea is the one I think will succeed, so next month I will attack the reinforcements. Congratulations, Omeros.'' Alexius praised his biographer and ordered all of them dismissed ''I will summon you when I need you again.''

    Meanwhile, in Antioch
Antioch was a big city, almost similar to Constantinople in size. The Romans assaulted the city in the night, under the leadership of their Prince, John Comnenus.

The garrison was caught by surprise and the city was taken with minimal losses for the Romans. Emir Malik, and his Turk army that survived, were 233 men total. John told them to do as they please, and they left for Jerusalem. The city was occupied and they all starting to call him ''the Honourable''. He was now waiting for his wife and children to come from Adana, when Basileios entered, still armoured and bloodied, from the fight.
''The treasury contained 677 florins, and we lost 13 men during the fight. What is your first order about the city?'' he asked

''First, go take a bath and pull off your armour.'' he started, both laughing '' Second, repair whatever we broke and start construction of a small chapel, where the Patriarch of Antioch's seat will be.'' he continued, turning serious
''Have you chosen anyone for the position?'' Basileios asked
''Not yet. When the chapel is done, I will start searching for a pious man to be the Patriarch'' he answered, clearly with a bit of irony in his voice. He turned serious again and asked '' How is Stavros?''
''Not well after the unfortunate event in Hungary.'' Basileios stated ''This may be serious, John, don't forget, he is not 20 years old, he is 65.''
''I will let him be the bodyguard of Matilda, Malha and Vlasios. I will wait for them to come.''

    Winter 1090, Antioch
The Prince was in great mood. He saw his beloved wife and children once again, and was playing with them, when a man who looked like a merchant entered the Prince's current residence and demanded an audience. When John arrived in his hall, he was already there. He looked like a Greek, and starting talking.
''My Prince, I am Alexandros of Jerusalem, one of the few Christians in the Holy City.'' he spoke fast and he was determined to achieve his goal, whatever it was ''I have seen the merchants of the Christian nations refused access in the city. And people need trade, for without it, there would be endless war and technology would never advance. So we must reach the country of a special type of ware, named after the only country that produces it, Chinaware from China. Having the right to trade with it would bring a lot of profit, as would communication with the tribes south of Egypt, the Zulu or the men from the Realm of Hindustan do.''
''And how do you think we will achieve the things you offer?''
''By giving me a 1000 florins to spend on repairs of my mansion, which will become an Explorers' Guild serving only the Empire.''
''I accept, Basileios'' John said and turned to his friend ''give Lord Alexandros the amount of florins he needs.''

Meanwhile, in the borders between Venice and Hungary

A battle was raging. It was between Strategos Nikeforos Abalantes of the Roman Empire and Doge Domenico Selvo of Venice. The bodyguards of the Doge were being shot down by the horse archers of Rome while he was chasing Nikeforos. Domenico's infantry was overwhelmed by the Roman infantry while Roman archers were providing supporting fire in their unprotected flanks. It was over. He knew it. But he was afraid of death. One of his remaining bodyguards, Antonio, approached him.
''My Doge, we can provide you enough time to escape, we can hold long enough. A single rider is faster than a whole army, you can escape. Go, we will...'' and before Antonio could finish his sentence an arrow hit and pierced his armour near the heart ''G..Go...f...fast...mi...lord'' were his final words. The Doge listened to his dead bodyguard and tried to escape. But something hit him. All turned black, and he fell off his horse.

A man was above him. He put off his helmet and it revealed a handsome young face, with marks of war on it. He stared at his unconcious enemy with his icy blue eyes. A man came running towards him. He was an old Roman, of 50 years.
''Good job, Strategos. Should we spare any of the prisoners?'' he asked ''You know the men want to see them executed.''
''No one will be harmed until the man I sent for a ransom in Zagreb returns.'' the man stated
''But, Nikeforos. Weren't you the cruel sadist that would execute them in an instant?''
''I only did that so Alexius thought I matched his character. I never intended for them to be executed, unless the ransom is rejected.'' Nikeforos told, much to the old man's dissappointment ''Go count the dead, Stelios, who knows? They may reject.''

Three days later, a man woke up in a tent. He was tied, and his long grey hair was unwashed and filthy. He was even starting to grow facial hair. But he was not alone. A man was in there, a young one with a handsome face.
''Who are you? Do you know who am I?'' the old man started
''You don't need to know who am I, but I know that you are Doge Domenico.''
''Then you must be the general of the Greeks, Nikeforos.''
''Wrong, I am the general of the Romans, Nikeforos.'' he said ''and I have news for you.''
''What is it?'' he angrily asked, if not demanded.
''Still stuborn and proud. I sent an emissary to Zagreb and it's small garrisson, and Alessandro Selvo claimed that the Venetian treasury couldn't afford the ransom. Do you want this to end the long and painful way, or the short and painless?''
''I would go for the latter.'' was all the Doge managed to say before Nikeforos seperated his head from his body.''

A week ago, out of Zagreb

The two armies, the Roman and the Venitian were equal, but the latter one was divided. The smaller army of reinforcements was from Zagreb, and was easily destroyed by the horse archers and bodyguards of the Roman Empire. While running them down, a heavily armed man, told to another one similarly armoured:
''Wasn't the garrisson supposed to be larger Alexius?''
''They moved them out of the city a week ago, Theotokios. Now stop talking. Their leader, a Selvo, is fleeing.'' Alexius commanded him, his eyes turned on the fleeing horseman.
''We can't reach him, let's go shoot down the immobile army under the Patrician.'' Theotokios suggested
''Good idea! MEN, FIRE AT WILL!'' Alexius commanded the men ''FOR ROME!!!''
The advantage of shooting cavalry against slow heavy infantry was perfectly exploited by Emperor Alexius. In 15 minutes, the whole army was being ran down by cavalry.

After killing them, he assembled his men and gave them a speech.

''Men,today we deserved to enter Zagreb but a fleeing bastard denied us of our right. Let's go and start sieging down his hiding place. When we get through the walls, nothing will stop us from the wrath of our weapons! The man who kills him gets a 100 florins from the loot. FOR ROME!!!'' he ended
''ROME, ROME, ROME!!!'' the men started cheering

''Where is that Omeros? He deserves a reward too.'' Alexius asked Theotokios ''He will help me find a poetic way to execute the prisoners.''
