Default Alternative to alcohol, Professor Nutt's proposed drug

I've read the entire article when I had access to sciencemag.org, but here's a brief overview for you to ponder about:

    http://www.sciencemag.org/content/343/6170/478.summary

    Science 31 January 2014:
    Vol. 343 no. 6170 pp. 478-481
    DOI: 10.1126/science.343.6170.478

    The Dangerous Professor

    Kai Kupferschmidt

British drug researcher David Nutt is often at the center of controversy. His proposals for more rational, evidence-based drug policies have triggered angry reactions, and he was fired as a top U.K. government adviser in 2009 for criticizing a new cannabis policy. Nutt believes society should focus more on reducing harm from drugs; among his own projects is a safer substitute for alcohol, which he considers one of the most dangerous drugs around. Nutt has identified several molecules that he says may provide the same pleasant feeling as alcohol but without the risks.
Here's the man's credentials from the British Association for Pharmacology. And of course, for more info, here's his Wiki page.

If I may quote him from the sciencemag.org article, David Nutt says: "We know people like alcohol, they like the relaxation, they like the sense of inebriation. Why donít we just allow them to do it with a drug that isnít going to rot their liver or their heart?"

Seems pretty sensible, but the politicians just won't listen to him! In addition to "dangerous professor," they also call him "Professor Nutty."

What do you guys think? There are predictions that this sort of drink that affects the human brain's GABA receptors without the harmful affects that alcohol does to the brain and liver will be on the market in perhaps a year from now. Would you drink a cocktail of it if it tasted good or approached the taste of alcohol?

The article quotes David Nutt comparing his idea for an alternative to alcohol to the commercial success and health benefits of smoking the nicotine-filled vapors of electronic cigarettes to regular cigarettes which contain harmful, cancer-inducing substances in its tobacco.

I dont drink because I want to get drunk or like beer. I like my liver failure.

I'm quoting this because it doesn't make sense and makes me laugh.

Umm... but THC is still addictive (with prolonged usage) and still causes slow decline of objective intellectual thought (although it is true that creativity is increased).

More likely, the brain is fooled into being stoned, but no chemical changes take place.

THC still replaces the chemicals on the nerve receptors that control anxiety, leading the brain to stop producing said chemicals and relying totally on THC

I'll tell you one thing, even that being said it was easier for me to quit smoking weed than it was to quit coffee. But I've known people who've stuggled with quitting so I guess it depends on the person. I would suggest anyone who hasn't seen it to watch Super High Me. Goes through alot of those things.

As far as the new alternative, as long as it comes with the same drunk feeling it'll catch on. If not it's to the history books for it.

The real issue is why people want to drink alcohol besides serious reason.

Is there a serious reason for drinking alcohol? I mean, it makes you more relaxed and makes it easier to talk to women since it allows you to lose some of your inhibitions. People just drink for fun, basically. And to become "better" dancers.
