One thing Im not to fond of is the "Bird Helmet." Yes the peoples of La Tene did put intricate designs into their craft work but the all too infamous Bird Helm is misconceived as actual armour. In truth it was more in relation to the Praetorian cloak than something that would actually be used in battle. It was a "display helm", worn only during traditional events, parades, and such. At best, only the general/captain would be the one to use it as it would make him easier to recognize (putting him at a disadvtage against the enemy) but could inspire the troops with its striking appearance, similar to famous lion helm worn by Alexander.

EDIT: Sorry for the lack of a better source but wiki has it right:
"There is some limited evidence of such decorative motifs being used on actual helmets in the ancient world, but these may have functioned as ceremonial rather than functional objects."

And as for your own sources just remember this: "A picture is worth a thousand lies."
Theyre not much worth as a reliable reference due to cultural skewing and misconceptions.

Those units, in particular the generals looks amazing. Can't wait to get my hands on to them.

If I had to come with some kind of critice it would be nice if you guys on the team who are making these previews would give us no good leeches some links to some of the sources, besides artists paintings, you base the units on.

Looks nice overall But it also puzzles me with some of those helmets. As mentioned earlier, the bird helmet. I know that you cant go 100% historical in the creation of units since that might be a tiny bit too boring.
In a battle you wouldnt like to balance a big metal bird on top of your head or have other hampering equipment.
    Still looks nice though.
And try posting in the historical research thread and not just pictures

Hi all first of all sorry for my english,

I understand what you told about the helmets and don't worry i read almost often than i saw about history (it's not a sarcasm).

I think that historically some solduros in the rearguard worn this kind of helmets and not only the generals because they rarely engaged in the battlefield.

Plus they had themselves a circle of bodyguards when they were inside the battle in fact it was the beginnings of the feudal system where local chief brought his troops under the authority of a bigger chief etc...

Inside the game this fact is materialized by the officers, but remember that we actually talking about a game and for gameplay purpose we have to creat a hierarchy of unit.

That's why we have a battalion of solduros fighting together while it was rare in real event.

Anyway inside the top tier units that i have redone the use of this type of helmet is rare but unfortunately because of the game engine it tends to pop up by pack...

All your comments are listened and appreciated i will try to do the best i can to offer the best result.

    Best regards.

looks good. I hope most of the units aren't this fancy looking though.
Also, although I like waht you've done with the faces and beards, it should be noted that the Celts had predominantly brown, red and blonde hair. Black and darker hair colours wasn't a strong feature of northern and western europeans until the southerners (romans) and the eastern barbarians arrived. I'd say let's see more blondes in there!

    can't wait for further releases!

oh but I hope it will... elite units were very fancy, especially the ones that fought as mercs for Carthage, Greeks etc.

Outstanding work here guys, the Barbarians, as the other people called them look very civilized as they should! you get my picture!

I love the armours & details.

But whats going on with the shield shapes.

All these factions hail from relatively small tribes, & predominently their would be one local method of building a shield, but it seems we are using all shield shapes possible (granted with factional designs) personally id like the shields shapes to be grouped to localities a little more, otherwise all the barbarians will be using all the same shield shapes, which imo makes them less individual.

So in summary id rather see

    - Iberians with long round ended shields.
    - Celts with oval shields
    - Germans with coffin shields

    vs

    - all barbarians use all shield shapes & therfore lose their individual identities.

Yes im aware the more historical biased players will launch into the - Radious is for u mucker, & i wouldnt want a standard shape shield for all the men in a unit without some variety (after all we are barbarians & not Roman Legions)

But once again ill stress looks & gameplay feature are just as important as history (& even historically I bet ive got a decent argument - ie.. the 3 villiages making up the Suebi tribe prolly had only 1 shield workshop amongst them & tried to mass produce their local shape as much as posssible vs building a new funky (far away) design some tribesmen looted from a caravan.

Sorry to put anyting negative into this at all tbh - as the reskins are excellent, I just like individual factions, its what attracts me to this time frame vs Shogun & its all faction have access to the same stuff in different colours approach.

I understand this but many sources reported the use of different kind of shields inside the celtics tribes and mostly the cultural variation is in the pattern painted on them.

Anyway i promise to keep the faction the more unique i can do and don't worry we discuss inside the dev team about keeping some gears inside factions to keep them unique.

Don't forget it's just preview and not the final state of the futur update.

That's incorrect. There will be no iceni in 0.75 I'm afraid.
