Some of you need to go look up the word aesthetics and read up on art direction... Rome Total War 2 does not have a consistent aethestic... The fact that OOOHHH IT HAS SHINIES +100 does not make up for the fact that the disgusting unit cards, terrible inconsistent units and total overeliance on color saturation, HDR and Bloom conflict AND NO ANTI-ALIASING create a terrible overall picture.
Are you truly going to stand there and tell me that this:
Is better than this:
If so you need to get some new eyeballs... Like a whole new set of eyeballs dude. A pair that work.
Your medieval 2 pic is a promotion pic by CA like this in rome2 (http://gamingbolt.com/wp-content/upl..._oathsworn.jpg)
Find pics with similar resolution and then compare.
How do you figure that? That's a user generated screenshot dude... Unless you think CA marketing employees marketers to take ridicolously low rez screenshots where the cavalry is not even facing the right way to promote their games.
Also different rez? The Med 2 shot is at a lower rez which means the overall image quality of the screenshot should be WORSE...
I can agree with some that Shogun 2 looks better than Rome 2 maybe because of texture and color difference- maybe because Im fan of Blizzard and their style but also don't have nothing against those realistic colored textures. I must admit that I am not impressed with Rome 2 graphic if we compare it with Shogun 2. I expected a little more.

Isn't it mainly because you have real 16xx AA or whatever in Shogun 2 and Rome 2 only has that yes or no option for fake AA?
Jaggies make all the difference in the world.
alkis6 The fact that you thought that was a marketing shot perfectly proves my point so much better than I could ever articulate it. Thank you.
ok let's compare this http://cf.shacknews.com/shack_images...edieval2_3.jpg to this then https://hostr.co/file/2HbipFYJq8Da/r...-43-02-272.png

Err obviously Rome 2 is the TW game with best graphics so far, especially in regards to details, BUT Rome 2 does look truly terrible on any setting below high for some reason. As for Shogun 2 looking better, it doesn't, it is just done in less realistic more plastic shiny graphics that makes it look more flashy than it is, but that is just a visual trick and not actually graphics.
With mods. Your claim was that Rome 2 was the better looking game... So far all you've proven is that GEM does a damn fine job at cleaning up the horrible mess that is RTW2. Also you had to zoom ALL THE WAY IN to make it look like that because if you're even 5 meters away those units become sprites with jaggies everywhere.
Shogun 2 had the wind effect, soft shadows, and those amazing tesselated mountains, those gave more life to the ambient. Also, Shogun 2 didn't had the blobbing so the combat was prettier to watch. And the color filter on Shogun 2 was better too, Rome 2 colors aren't impressive in vanilla. Imo, the only thing that Rome 2 wins is the dynamic clouds.
I think it mostly has to do with the lightning effects, and contrast: Shogun 2 feels vibrant, clean, shiny, Rome II looks monochrome, and the lightning on soldiers makes them always look like they are under a shadow. If you also add that Rome II has no real anti-aliasing, you can understand why Shogun 2 can look better, even though it is technically inferior.
I think the issue with Rome 2 is that, even though the unit models have higher amount of details and textures are also a lot more detailed, the default shader used is simply awful.
You can obviously see all that amazing potential being wasted simply because of the murky washed out lighting and fuzzy details. For some reason, the rendering quality has gone worse for the engine. Even transparent details look awful compared to smooth alpha in M2TW engine.
The reason is simple, the graphics engine itself is inferior in R2TW. Even though R2TW units have amazingly more detail, they don't look as good as M2TW low-detail units.
