Thread: Write Tech Tree descriptions!

    Icon4 Write Tech Tree descriptions!

    Hi guys!

Good news! Here is an other way to help our work! The tech trees are almost done, but lots of the buildings don't have descriptions. If you have some time and knowledge, than you certainly can help us. I link a sheet below, where you can see the (very, very) simplified version of the DotS building database. I'd like to ask You, to write some description (especially if you find something about your own country/favourite theme).

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...YTUxOQWc#gid=0

    Some help:
In the first column, you can read the name of the entire tree. Some of them are codenames and there are some comments for the modders, just ignore these.
In the second column, there are the names of the certain buildings. These are native or english names.
In the third column you can insert links to images, if you find a good one (these will be the in-game pictures above the descriptons).
The last (fourth) column contains the descriptions. In most cases the description of a building is harder to write than a unit description (I think), but I think it's more interesting too.

So come on guys, it will be fun!

    Good news!

I would like to know what kind of imagery you would like to have in the mod. I have seen a couple of them and they are real images, so I will proceed in the same way. If you prefer some kind of toon-ish imagery (as in the vanilla game), please tell us as quick as possible.

We use real images because the lack of historical imagery and a qualified 2d artist. If you find pictures from chronicles that would be cool, but photos ar OK too.

Allright, then. I will be uploading the edited images to my dropbox account. Could you please check if you can access to the following link? I just want to be sure that you will be able to access to my files whenever you want:

    Hi guys,

As for historical imagery, I'm not sure if you know the following page:
    http://manuscriptminiatures.com/
You can find here a lot of medieval images, all of them were created before 1450.

Did a couple of barracks ones for you. Hope they're okay. I'll probably come back and do a few others when I have more time.

    Quick question here:

What time format do we have to use? Since my english vocabulary is not too extense, I don't know how to formulate the question addecuately. Instead, I would like you to tell me which of the following texts are more correct

    Chosen term: Cesspools

    Example 1 (Past):
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
A cesspool, or cesspit, was a pit, conservancy tank, or covered cistern which could be used to dispose of urine and feces, and more generally of all sewage and refuse. It was a more antiquated solution than a sewer system. Traditionally, it was a deep cylindrical chamber dug into the earth, having approximate dimensions of 1 metre diameter and 2–3 metres depth. Cesspools were introduced to Europe in the 16th century, at a time when urban populations were growing at a faster rate than in the past. The added burden of waste volume began overloading urban street gutters, where chamber pots were emptied each day.

    Example 2 (Present):
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
A cesspool, or cesspit, is a pit, conservancy tank, or covered cistern which can be used to dispose of urine and feces, and more generally of all sewage and refuse. It is a more antiquated solution than a sewer system. Commonly, it is a deep cylindrical chamber dug into the earth, having approximate dimensions of 1 metre diameter and 2–3 metres depth. The appearance of cesspools is a response for the increasing urban population growth, whos waste volume has been overloading urban street gutters, where chamber pots are emptied each day.

An adequate phrasing would be "which tense should we use?"

I think either works, but personally I've been writing them dependent on if they're still in use today. So town guard, for example, would be written in the past tense (was). But sewers would be written in the present tense (is).

I'm sure a dev team member can come and lay down the law. But that's what I suggest for now.

I would prefer the past tense in most cases, including this one. Though I would prefer a past form of example 2, as I don't find the 'Cesspools were introduced to Europe in the 16th century' part very fitting. Firstly because it falls outside our timeline, secondly because it presumes Eurocentrism, and thirdly because it's not correct. Only a certain form of cesspit was introduced in Europe in the 16th century, other forms had existed for centuries or even millennia across various parts of the world by then.

Allright, then. Thanks for the replies, I will continue writing it in the past tense as long as I can, avoiding such timeline errors.

I have added a couple that I wrote for this mod a couple of years ago but weren't already in the document
