These units are not late roman and belong to the 1st or 2nd century.

i beg your pardon but these units are just fancy. There was no pretorian infantry with steel masks. Only mask we have found belongs to a horseman and it was made for tournaments mainly. However few units on r2 are historical so who cares.

That image is taken form 1st Century and depicts roman cavalry during training and competition exercises.

Roman legionaires didn't wear face masks, especially late roman types. It would be good to get some expert advice on all things late roman from people who know and understand the period.

single elements used can be historical but it is how he puts them together to be unhistorical. But I think he knew that since it is so obvious. "The masked lagionaries" sounds like a good title for some Hollywood movie though. Now let s go back on realism.

Yes i know a standard legionare wouldn´t use such a helmet, it was just to stop all these "omg so unhistorical" and "u suck comments"

Big fan of the lateimperial roman age though, barbarian invasion was probarbly my favorite expansion

Good advice Julianus although I think you could have been more polite in wording your statement, you sounded a bit...condescending. But yeah Spartan you could get a lot of info from the Invasio Barbarorum guys in their mod thread in regards to the period the mod is taking place.

a legionary dressed with that mask and that armor would be invincible...where would you hit him? totally covered in steel

I personally thought Julianus Heraklius statement was just sound advice, not condescending but a reflection of how seriously he takes his subject

True, he is very well versed in regards to this period in roman history and does take it very seriously, poor wording on my part, apologies Julianus.

But I still feel that Spartan has come under some undeserved criticism from some in the community in regards to his unit making, while I generally support as much historical accuracy as possible in a mod, I firmly support and believe it is the modders right to do as they please, after all it is their work what right do we have to criticize when they are the ones working hard and taking the time and energy to make these mods.

Good point, and even I take some personal liberty with my mods. But the TWC bunch is a fickled one at times and I always believe we should be clear in what our intentions are. If you making an historical mod then you should try to be so. If you want to add some "flavour" to your mod, then that is fine but best state that at the time. Of course a good mod is a combination of historical accuracy, good game-play and artistic licence.

I admire Spartan for attempting such a large undertaking and I do wish him well, but as I stated previously, getting some advice from people who know the period well would enhance his mod no end.

i wanted just to give him advice, i must admit i was a bit deluded when i told him exactely what to do and he did totally the opposite. I know he has power to do anything he wants though, but i would like something historical.

The modder and I have already discussed sharing work, but I am not sure when he is planning on releasing his units.
