    Default General Traits

Hey guys. I tried to find this by searching via google but usually leads to 'cheat' codes etc.

Generals can get traits or retinues, for example when you build a military building in a settlement, the general can get a movement bonus, like Orc Draught or Drillmaster.

This trait I know, but there are many other traits I would like to know off how to force them with buildings or whatever.

Is there maybe a list or guide anywhere about this?

read the triggers in export_descr_ancillaries.txt and the export_descr_character_traits.txt in the /Third_Age_3/data folder.

    They're pretty much self-explanatory, but here's an example :

    Trigger sitting_around_town_with_taverns
    WhenToTest CharacterTurnEnd

    Condition EndedInSettlement
    and RemainingMPPercentage = 100
    and SettlementBuildingExists >= brothel
and not Trait Aragorn > 0
and not Trait Gandalf > 0
and not Trait Ents > 0
    and not Trait Aragorn2 > 0
and not Trait Elessar > 0
and not Trait Halbarad > 0
and not Trait Boromir > 0
and not Trait Faramir > 0
and not Trait Theoden > 0
and not Trait Ecthelion > 0
and not Trait Witchking > 0
and not Trait Nazgul > 0
and not Trait Saruman > 0
and not Trait Lurtz > 0
and not Trait Ugluk > 0
and not Trait IAmPope > 0
and not Trait Sauron > 0

    Affects Drink 1 Chance 1
    Affects Gambling 1 Chance 1
    Affects Girls 1 Chance 1

When a normal general (except those named above) has 100% movement points left and he's in a city with a brothel or bigger, then he's going to get these 3 traits. And it gets worse with each turn he's spending in that town. For that reason, some of us prefer to destroy the brothels if playing as a good faction.

There are some other descr_ files that are interesting, as it allows you to see the mechanisms (rewards or penalties) for each action you take.

if I may add my two cents:

    - http://totalwar.honga.net/traits.php?v=tatw3&f2=gondor : here you find a decent list of traits for Vanilla TATW, extracted from game files
    - http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...on-60-Complete : this is a great guide, also includes a part on how to train generals

anyway, much depends if you are playing a submod, as I've experienced big differences and in general some of the informations might be outdated

This is what I'm talking about. I know military buildings can give movement bonus traits or retinues, and brothels can give drinker traits etc.

I do not want to know what traits exist or what they do, i can see that ingame. I would like to know which buildings provide what traits or retinues

A lot of the traits are triggered by events, not just having the building. For example, you have a good chance of getting Fine Armor when you finish constructing a heavy armourer, not just being in a city with finished one. If you want to train a Geologist (Master Miner), you can demolish and rebuild level 1 mines because the trait is gained by finishing construction.

Aha, so it doesn't ( apart from geologist ) necessarily happen when finishing a building. If a general is in the city it has the chance of gaining those traits , is that what you're saying?

All right, then I have one final question. How does a general, if there is a way at all, get or increase the chance of getting the 'Night Fighter' trait?

Some traits are earned by being in a city with a certain building.
Some traits are earned by being the governor that just finished building a specific thing.
You should skim through those 2 files, as that's the best way to see what does what. As far as I know, nobody's been so kind as to get a huge compatimentalized spreadsheet having all of those traits and ancillaries. You do get certain pieces of informations, but your best shot at learning the ancillaries and traits is by looking up on that file. Most of them are actually logical, though.

How does a general, if there is a way at all, get or increase the chance of getting the 'Night Fighter' trait?
Either he was born with it, or he has fought a defensive night battle and won, i.e. the AI attacked him with a night fighter general, chose that option, but your general won.
Afaik, the night fighter has only one level...
I don't really know much about this specific trait, as I don't really use it. I hate fighting at night, it's slow on my pc, it's dark and can't really distinguish the orc corpses on the ground.

I think night fighter has 3 levels- the 1st and 2nd provide +1 bonus, and the 3rd gives a handy +2 bonus. I shouldn't need to say that they all allow night battles to be fought

Night fighter prevents reinforcements. So if you see 3 Harad stacks together, if you choose night fight you will only battle 1 stack not all 3 armies.

Salisian's excellent guide for Vanilla MTW, it lists them all and their triggers. He did a great job. And many of them are still around in TATW.

Oh that's indeed a usefull guide

Night Fighter (NightBattleCapable 1)- +1 Command when fighting at night,
gained after 1 point of NightBattleCapableNightBattleCapable has Noctophobia as an antitrait.A general offered for adoption, lesser adoption, marriage, or on coming of age gains a point of NightBattleCapable with 10% probability. At the start of any turn, a general who has five or more command stars and no levels of NightBattleCapable gains six points of it.Any general who has one or more command stars and no levels of NightBattleCapable who wins a night battle gains six points of NightBattleCapable.
I found this about Night Fighters. But I don't get it. When you get 1 point of Night Fighter Capable the general gets the Night Fighter trait. But it also says that a 5+ star commander at any turn gets 6 points. Points in what? When will it lead to Night Fighting?

I would say at the 10% chance mentioned in the sentence before.

It is 100% chance of getting 6 points. It only takes 1 point to get that trait (threshold = 1). The 6 is probably to counter any Noctophobia anti-trait points that he might have.

A good tutorial by Alpaca on how traits work: http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showth...-coding-Traits

    Then now I am confused.

100% chance of getting 6 points should mean a 5+ command star general should always get the night fighter trait as soon as he reached those 5 stars

Not if he has the Noctophobia trait. If he has 6 points in that trait then he effectively has -6 in the NightBattleCapable trait. Giving +6 to NightBattleCapable will have an end result of 0 points in NightBattleCapable and therefore will not be received, but Noctophobia will be removed.

It's all about anti-traits which that tutorial explains.
