Thread: How many are still playing RTWII?

Default How many are still playing RTWII?

Honestly I passed back to Shogun II ...

The multiplayer is much more balanced, rewarding ( for the mini detail add ons like armor sets etc... general ranks etc ... ) and actually not a slowmotion experience ...

And also I must say that graphically looks much better, the units in RTW look like had been rushed, made quickly and fast , with lot of optimization choices, while in Shogun the units look more detailed, poilished and much better looking ...

I don't have Shogun II, but I may get one when I get the chance. Currently I'm playing Rome II though in SP. Playing around, but it hasn't gotten me into it as seriously as Civ IV did.

I mean, it should have, but it didn't. I spend the hours, but the hours are quite hollow.

Shogun 2? Really better multiplayer than Shogun 2 (retainers, general skills, veterans...).
But i'm currently playing Rome I MP: it may not have good graphics and small rewards, but at least tactics and strategies matter. And it's still played a lot.
Disclaimer: the post above is way way prealpha, the final version will be way better than this.

I have given up on it, I dislike the campaign(it doesn't feel epic) and dislike the battles plus its still crashing on me. So far its been a waste of money I am currently playing Third Age and Hearts of Iron 2 TRP. Rome 2 is a big disappointment so far

I am waiting for the significant issues to be fixed (especially AI and optimization). Haven't played any TW in the mean time. Tried playing Rome 1, but that did not last long.

Got myself an EB campaign going, and also was playing around with some Medieval 2 hotseat/hotseat mods with a friend of mine.

As soon as I loaded up a historical battle on EB I knew that it was better than Rome 2...units didn't break and run after two seconds, nor were people being massacred in a matter of seconds. The cohesion held together and I had time (and to win I needed) to support or flank units along the line as was needed. I walked away from that battle glad to have won it, feeling that I fought a truly massive battle and more satisfied with one battle in EB than I had in the entire time of playing Rome 2.

As for M2TW campaigns and hotseat, they felt a bit dated, but were still great fun and the battles were, again, better than Rome 2's. I'm sure that updates and mods will make Rome 2 a much better game, but in the meantime I'm happy to just do other stuff.

I still play R2 and also will play for some more time. But already now, I feel immersion is lacking compared to S2. I thought I would get used to some elements I did not like from the beginning (unit cards, no defensive fire at will for pilum throwers, the family/political system, buildings in cities represented by icons rather than beautiful immersive pictures, characters dying off after few turns due to 1tpy, and so on...), but the more I play, the more I see that I will NOT get used to it, and it seriously damages immersion.

I also played S2TW and ETW a couple of times the last few days... and the difference was obvious. It felt better.

Still, I am playing R2 and hoping for further improvements by patches and maybe DLC. But I fear (I am pretty sure) several/most of the disliked elements mentioned above will NOT be changed by any patch.

@ Aenima Yeah EB is one of the best mods ever(who are you playing as?), by the time Rome 2 is sorted I reckon EB 2 will be due for release and that will be one awesome mod, I still play EB from time to time but I have played it so much I have almost worn it out. On a side note anyone here waiting for Elite Dangerous? I hope it doesn't disappoint like rome 2
@Kraut nice post and I agree with everything you say, the dumbed down city building is a game killer and will probably never be fixed because it would take too much of a rewrite

200 hours and counting, no end in sight. I'm loving it, for the most part. Although my conquest pattern was skewed by having to perform historical bonus objectives, so my campaign in Gaul was cut short and I was forced to take Magna Germania, Magna Arabia (incomplete) and Mesopotamia, as well as trying to nurture the growth of my clients, the Armenians.

totally agree. lack of immersion caracterizes rome2. i dont understand why CA dont bring back the excellent family tree of rome total war. it was awesome and you could choose your heir. you could even mount scenarios like for example: ok brother, we should share the empire in 2: you take the east and i keep the crown and the west of the empire. all this created a true immersion...

Not played it since just after launch really (i played 60'ish hours inside the first week or so)... but game imbalance, lack of features, and general "lack of a brain" especially in battles has had me shelf it for a little bit.. i'll probably revisit it once patch 3 is out officially, or maybe even hold off until patch 4 is out.

Haven't even started yet, though certainly not for lack of trying. Still waiting for the patch to make the game actually work and not crash on start up.

I play a few hours after each patch to see if the AI is still dumb and how the game performs. Hasn't changed much at all.

I've reverted to Napoleon: Total War with Darthmod. So far played 47 turns, and I've only managed to capture 6 regions. (3 within the last 6 turns, because I've crippled France by taking Paris, so it can't send as many armies at me anymore). It took me about 15 turns to capture Paris, even though I kept trying. They held me off fairly successfully until I managed to raise a second army. That said, here's a collection of some of the stuff I've been forced to face:

And that's not even close to everything. In the meantime I've lost Gibraltar, sank the French fleet of 15 ships that was trying to transport Napoleon's 10 000 to England, captured Amsterdam, fended off 2-3 more French armies.

I originally started as Sweden, and to my shame I lost the second campaign I've ever lost in a Total War game. (first game I ever lost was with Hattori in Shogun 2). I was facing double the amount of troops from Prussia when Napoleon landed next to Stockholm with 10 000 troops. I had no income and I could only sustain about a 30 unit army, while I was facing much larger ones constantly. Here's the picture I took from my situation:

It also looks beautiful. I'm running everything on max and it runs like a charm. Much better than anything Rome 2 has managed, even when I was playing a co-op campaign with a friend with low unit sizes.
It's surprisingly satisfying to play. I kinda skipped Napoleon, only played it a little bit, but Rome 2 really left me wanting for a new Total War experience.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

So yeah, overall I much more satisfying experience. The AI isn't of course that smart, but at least it puts up a fight.

EDIT: Oh yeah, this was a crazy battle where the enemy reinforcements kept coming in a steady stream and I almost ran out of bullets. The only reason I won was because the timer(60 minutes) ran out and I was the defender.
It got intense, because they didn't stop coming...

I started again after 10 day break and am playing with patch 3 and Radious mod. It makes the game a little bit harder as I sometimes face better armies.

IMO if they manage to fix the A.I and Unit blobbing I will be happier, I am going to find myself a 2tpy mod and then my generals will have a meaning as they will last 80-100 turns. Still miss the family tree though.

I also wish that someone would make a mod that lets the A.I recruit from settlements instead of barracks, i've played the game for over 100 hours and the only decent armies I've fought is during civil wars. The A.I rarely builds barracks
