Default Revenge of the Semites - A Purely Cosmetic Carthaginian Mod (Updated for Patches 7 and 8)

PREFACE - PLEASE READ This is my first released mod. I originally made it for my own use, and decided to upload it here for anyone else who might have the same tastes as me. I was influenced by Alexmcm13's Hellas Resurgent mod (which is really good, by the way - go download it!), which encouraged me to get back into TW modding for the first time since working on The Great War mod (very early on in its development) back in Napoleon. If anyone else feels that my idea is too similar to theirs, I can guarantee you that it was not intentional. Thanks for reading.

    SCREENSHOTS

Taken with extreme settings, GEM enhancement mod, and Athalwulf's Natural Dyes.

1.2 update (thanks to Prof's excellent collection, see changelog):

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Revenge of the Semites is a purely cosmetic, appearance-altering mod for the Carthaginian faction. I decided to make it in order to make the Carthaginian units appear more powerful and less pathetic compared to their Roman counterparts. I removed the Celtic thorax armor that was widely copypasted by CA across many units - this is what I originally intended to do, but it snowballed into modifying almost every Carthaginian unit.

    Major changes:

    -Added greaves to most units
-Added thorax armor to Libyan hoplites, now it is interspersed with tunics
-Removed all Celtic mail and replaced it with scale and linothorax
-Added helmets and ammo pouches to artillery men
    -Added helmets to elephant riders
-Added cloaks to Sacred Band, General's Bodyguard, and Noble Cavalry

To install, you should download Mitch's Mod Manager, unzip the attached .rar file (7zip or Winrar will work), and place the contained .pack file into your RII data folder. Then run the manager and check this .pack before launching.

Current version is: 1.2 (27 September)

    This mod is:
    Save game compatible
Compatible with all stat mods, uniform mods (that DO NOT edit Carthaginian units), and faction color mods
Compatible with any version of the game, regular or beta

    29 September: Added Suebi minimod

    Screenshots
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Spear Brothers

    Bloodsworn

    Scout Riders

    Longbow Hunters

    Berserkers

    Wodanaz Spears

    Artillery crew

    -Gives all shirtless units shirts
-Adds helmets to most melee units, caps to most ranged units, and wolf pelt cloaks to a few of each
    -Other minor details

This is just something I made to make the Suebi less barbaric, and I can see why a lot of people might not prefer it. So be warned if you don't like the idea of clothed barbarians.

(download ALT version to not have Corinthians on the Sacred Band)

an idea: could you make late carthaginian units appear partially romanized with italic helmets and lorica hamata mixed in their ranks, as well as scutums? By the second punic war late carthaginian libyan troops began to use looted roman equipment and fought less like hellenic hoplites. It would be really cool to see that flavor of carthage expressed in a mod. It emphasizes their cultural mixing. For flavor you can keep the gold scale mail cuirass that a lot of them get, and -maybe- add an edited celtic chainmail armor to the mix for lower quality troops.

Also, I would LOVE if you could make the sacred band officer wear a lion-skin headdress. It would make them stand out, and wouldnt be at all unusual for carthage. The sacred band in general feels really lacklustre, like repainted hoplites. I wish they looked abit more armored and special. Perhaps consider going the radious route and offer them hellenic 'mannicae' or other arm protection, and experiment with other heavy looking armors. I bet with the right texture they could look awesome.

Unfortunately I am not a texturer nor a modeler, so stuff like lion headdresses and arm protection are a bit out of reach. I'm trying to keep this mod using completely vanilla resources so that it is as seamless with the vanilla game as possible. The lorica hamata and Roman helmet idea is quite doable, though.

What do you think of this?

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

I think scutums would take away from the 'hoplite' feel. Just the montefortinos and the hamata keeps it in that 'Carthaginian' feel.

I like how those troops look, they seem to fit my general imagining of what they might look like for the second/3rd punic war. Hannibals army in Italy probably looked a bit like this towards the end. Good work.

There is a lion headdress variantmodel in the game already as far as I know. LAVRENTUS (spelling?) added it to his imperial legionary standard bearers. Granted, this means that underneath the headdress, the sacred band officer would be wearing a gallic (roman) helmet, but its a small price to pay for that kind of coolness.

An alternative to roman scutums could be Iberian shields. Its entirely reasonable that late carthaginian troops could use them, even those raised in Libya proper.

Or how about this, why not a mix of different shields for the late hoplites? A Hoplon/scutum mix would be amazing to see, I think.

Edit2: I can actually do texture work. Ive done this sort of thing for TW games in the past. I'm unfamiliar with how warscape handles its graphical resources however, but assuming you just handed me raw texture files in .dds or other formats I could definately change them as you pleased.

That would be awesome! One of those lion headdresses with a hoplite helmet or even a Corinthian would look pretty cool (assuming you can model too). If not you could come up with some new thorax designs for Carthage.

I added scutums and also some caetras, but you can't see those in this picture.

    1.1 Update Changes:

-Changed greaves so elite units have mostly 'elite' greaves, while non-elite units have more lackluster greaves
-Added lorica hamata armor to late Carthaginians, removing long sleeved scale so that the ratio of scale to chainmail is 1:1
-Added Roman Montefortino helmets to late Carthaginians to add to that feel of uniqueness while not appearing too close to Rome
-Decided to leave shields alone for now

see bottom of first post for download

I really love your work Geleco. Do you have any aspirations of growing your mod into more than aesthetics?

I would love to see Carthage with a few new units but not a total overhaul throwing them out of kilter with everyone else like the existing mod, the name of which I can't recall. I'm thinking adding the likes of:

Libyan Veteran Infantry - Better armoured version of the current Libyan infantry, basically a mix of scale and Roman chainmail instead of the linothorax.

Carthaginian/African/Numidian (select most appropriate) Infantry - I'm thinking the same model as the Onager/ballista crew but with a falcata and shield. A cool looking and cheaper sword infantry, a bit like a native Iberian infantry.

I haven't really thought about making new units. I generally don't like to make mods that can be invalidated by a patch and then has to be updated later; it's just too tedious for me.

Anyway, I added screenshots for the Suebi, look at the first post.
