Now, I'm pointing out that the Bible, the central text of Christianity, is not purely Christ's words in any way.

Where exactly, then, are we commanded to kill the non-beleiver?

That isn't what I was saying. The fact that the New Testament (well, to my knowledge) doesn't say to do that isn't the same as what you said.

The Old testament is Gods commandments to the Jews. He tells them to reclaim their land....he never issues such an order to a christian...

Which is not in any way what I said, though you may be right; I do not claim exhaustive NT knowledge.

Its not about whether you are commanded to kill the unbleievers in my mind its whether as a religion does it inspire violence, yes it does to me. As do all monotheistic religions, it is tribalism which inevitably leads to violence.

Then it is the feeling of unity that inspires this, not religion.

Group people together and call them a tribe....add another such tribe, and you get inevitable violence.

Religion is just the "tribe". If not religion, then nationalism, racism, favorite Soccer teams, etc.

Indeed but religion like nationalism has been the greatest division between tribes, the greatest thing to inspire tribalism and thus violence.

Anything that encourages this to my mind should not be encouraged, we should be moving away from the idea of tribalism as it is endemic in the psycological make up of racist and xenophobic attitudes.

Do you feel we need a sense of unity (nationalism religion) to lead a good life, do you think they are good ideas?

I'd be perfectly happy to be the only Christian on earth, a feeling of unity should have no place in spiritualism.

Ah yes but please look further into the post. Christianity as a culture breeds tribalism as do all monotheistic religions, it is a symptom of them is it not?

Or are they a symptom of a need for tribe, a need for a group? Which caused the other?

is it all that bad? would it be better if tribalism occured without the notions of forgiving an enemy and showing mercy?

If they were followed by all members of the "tribe" then it would be better. But as those ideas are not...

History proves your point redundant unfortunatly as it is religous fanatical and nationalist conflicts that prove to be the most hideous and violent. Tribalism of any form but especially these cases are always very bad.

When there is no religion, and no nations, you'll have just as much fighting....just not in single conflicts.
