Its a good game. We expect more from CA because MTW was a great game, and modders made some of the leater releases great too.
There's lots to like, and it'll get better.
I think I'm dissapointed its been released obviously beta, with patches on the fly. If it needs that many its a clear sign the game was not finished when released, same with the DLC.

Im loving it. With a couple of mods it's great.
It could have been way better however. We've seen from the files just how much has been left out in order to get it out on time, I hope it all comes in patches and dlc.
Better than Rome 1, but worse than Shogun 2.
Sad day.
I'm playing a campaign with Sparta. I was disappointed at first that the game was ugly with my old GPU, but after the patch it's OK if not gorgeous. I think the game is overall enjoyable, but it still requires some improvements.
- The internal policy part is not clear and doesn't feel right
- Naval battles are still too short, ships are destroyed very fast by ramming
- AI of course can be better
- The encyclopedia needs some improvement also, it's not clear when you can build a building.
- Some lags from time to time.
But overhall, it's a good game I think. the issue is more it's a kind of "beta" and not a finished product, so CA needs to do a lot of patching. They seems to be committed to that.
I think after a few patches, DLC, and some mods (I have the impression it is more moddable than others, and CA released information to help modding early), the game will be even better.
Maybe CA could release one or two more free culture pack DLC to compensate for release blunder.
why people has to be harassed for liking a game? i liked rome 1 but also because i could be part of online community and back then, there was way less kids and trolls....
and shogun 2 has the same capture points (flags), as far i remenber in castles and such...... except it unbalanced the game by giving unfair advantage in form of buffs (morale, melee bonus, etc etc older games had central plaza...... so looking deeper this feature of capturing flag aint that new, it just evolved.....
Common sense removed due being Disruptive.
This is definitely my fav game in the series although I still play Rome I due incredible mods being made.

you are not alone, I like this game and with some patches it sure is going to shine

Good thing to see that im not the only one. Im Realy enjoying the new time period in Total war series. I never realy get in to rome, because i started to play this series in Medieval 2 and Rome total war was looking a bit outdated, plus i dont have nostalgic value to it. My curent camapaing has been 40+ hours long, and im not geting boored to it. Sure the game has some preformance issues (Shogun 2 in Very high, this one works barely on medium), and some minor bugs, but i think they are fixable. If Sega would have given time to developers or Moders fix this game bugs and performance problems, this might be the best game of the series.
Yeah, I was having fun before lightening hit my PC. That's what I get for pillaging the temples of Zeus I suppose...
There's a lot to be improved on in this game, but thankfully could enjoy it as I wasn't experiencing any crashing bugs.
THERE IS NO CHALLENGE> YOU CANT LOSE > HOW CAN YOU ENJOY A GAME YOU CANT LOSE?
Nope im having alot of fun with my legendary Arverni campaign.
I like the game. However I am not happy with the state of it's release and implementations of some of the battle abilities and features. Namely flags for supply lines of course, hyper speed battle movements and kill rate, and the lack of AI. I can only hope the wonderful AI they talked about is incomplete and the best is still being worked on. I can be patient for this game as long as CA's intense support is active. They have done this in the past. Empire had a bad release, and fully patched the vanilla game was done well. Shogun 2 had probably the best vanilla release and still it was greatly improved over time. I can only expect the same will happen for Rome 2. I am done with pre-ordering TW games for sure though, the continual business practices of many major game companies and publishers has become despicable. No longer will I be paying for a WIP that is released in an effectively beta state of production.
I like the game too. But that doesn't mean I don't have problems with it. I can run it just fine, but there are some design choices which I strongly disapprove of, such as:
- "Magical buffs" for units during battles
- "Capture the flag" open field battles
- AI clearly fails from time to time (i.e. trying to stare me down for 60 minutes instead of charging my walls during a siege)
- No connection to my generals/agents/family (this has a lot to do with 1TPY and therefore they die so fast)
- No more family tree
- Many aspects of the game seems to have been cut short, especially the politics part (I think this could have been a really great feature of the game if they had fleshed it out more and made it influence the rest of the game in some way)
I do love the campaign map, however. I think the new system with the balancing of squalor, public order, income and food is great! And for me my game runs just smooth and looks great.
I'm sure the bugs we're all experiencing from time to time will be sorted out soon through patches. I'm more worried about the features they chose to not include or those who seems to be cut short half way through development. But I play the game and I enjoy it all in all. So, no, you're not the only one.

Every man that respects himself as a customer and his wallet cannot respect or like a company that lies in his face pre-release and charges him full price for an unfinished, buggy and laggy product in beta stage that crushes so often. The game is clearly half but the price is full. And to make it worse they also cut content from the game and charge us extra to play it from the first day (the Greek pack).
For more details on why the veteran TW fans dislike this game so much just watch the review of Angry Joe.He covers most of the failures of this game, from the worsened graphics to the broken naval battles.Just watch it and you'll get the answer.
If you want my personal opinion, here are the main points that destroy this game for me.
Technical issues
1)Graphical glitches.
2)Very often crushes, that after the patch became even more frequent.
3)Frustratingly laggy, especially on the campaign map.
4)Obvious bugs, for example all the special formations are broken (testudo, hoplite phalanx, sarissa phalanx etc.),the naval battles are completely broken (your units refuse to attack, ram or disembark on the enemy ships,no matter how many times you order them to) etc.
5)Your land units also randomly ignore your attack orders unless you order them at least 6 times repeatedly to attack.
Gameplay issues
6)Mediocre graphics. They are obviously much worsened compared to Shogun 2.The only exception is the water, which looks amazing, especially in battles. But the rest is just bah.Another pre-release lie.The game looks nothing like it did in the pre-release videos.
7)The stupid capture flags in open field battles.Nothing more needed to be said here. They are just battle breaking.
8)The retartedly fast battles.Every aspect of tactical maneuvering is gone because you simply don't have the time to do so.The battle of the center is over before you can even click on your flanks. And no,I am not using hyperbole here, this has literally happened to almost every single battle that I have fought. You don't even have the time to watch the troops fighting at all as the battles are over in 2 to 5 minutes usually and most of that time is spent on marching instead of fighting.
9)The horrible and cryptic way that the politics of the factions work. The game explains nothing about how they work,it has wrong modifiers that confuse you even more etc.For example I do something that has a possitive +1 influence modifier and as a result I lose influence! And I'm like WTF?!?!?
10)The game takes place in the era that the formations in combination with out-maneuvering won the battles, but there are no formations in this game. The battles are all like metal mosh-pits.This makes all the factions fight like barbarians and they have no character at all.Even the units with the passive ability that is supposed to hold them in tight formation fight like brainless masses. This is another battle breaking failure of the game.
11)The very poor, generic and without character unit rosters. If there are 700 unique units in this game then there is a red flying cow outside of my window too.Another lie.
12)The f@cked up unit stats. For example Thracian warriors having 100 melee attack and 80 weapon damage while the Spartan hoplites have 28 melee attack and 40 weapon damage. That's just facepalm.Or even a single unit of elephants wiping out a full army of 1.300 + soldiers on its own.You can see that in the review of Angry Joe.
13)No general speeches before battles.I loved those.Another step backwards.
14)No agent cutscenes.
15)No skill trees for generals and agents. You are supposed to know what comes next when you choose a skill. That's an obvious step backwards from Shogun 2,where the skill trees were great.
16)Horrible,impractical and cryptic building icons and unit cards.Especially the lack of numbers in the unit cards have made those cards completely useless for me.I just turn them off to get rid of them and have the whole screen available for watching the battlefield.
17)The horrible gameplay decision to let the armies freely walk on the sea as if it was normal land, without the need to build a navy. You know, land is supposed to be a defensive barrier when there is water between,so that if you want to attack someone who is at a distant shore you actually have to muster the money, men and time needed to build a proper navy and that requires further tactical planning from the player. But nope, that just doesn't happen in the game. This actually makes naval armies completely useless.
18)The stupid magic abilities for units, that except for immersion and realism breakers are also way too much unnecessary micromanagement that distracts you from the actual tactics and the battle.A very poor gameplay choice.
19)Enemy units magically getting through your units and just rush for the stupid capture point as if your units are not there.
20)The horribly long loading and end turn times.
21)Your units ignore your orders to get off the walls.Getting down from the walls is a torture.
Those are the basic fun breakers for me in Rome 2 that I can remember at the moment. There are other dislikes too, like wrong symbols for certain factions, wrong equipment for certain units, wrong starting positions and colours for certain factions, lame unit names,no seasons and other things, but they are minor compared to the fun breaking things mentioned above.I'm not saying that the game is totally horrible,it is somewhat enjoyable in the single player campaign, but not nearly as good as it was supposed to be.There are other game breaking issues too, like broken multi-player,but I only mention what destroys the experience for me in this post.As a conclusion, the game needs extremely heavy modding.
If I ignored the technical issues and had to give a score about exclusively the gameplay it would be a 5/10 (which means average). They have f@cked up battles which is the 50% of the game, but the campaign is somewhat enjoyable, despite some horrible gameplay decisions and the very bad UI.So that score is fair I think.
But overall, including the technical issues,I give it a 2/10 (which means very bad).I think it was a very embarrassing release for CA and in combination with the insulting first day paid DLC with cut content from the game,it was very disrespectful towards the customers.
I am hugely enjoying it... AI hasn't been bad... acceptable. No crashing, (only until the new patch today but that might be down to mods) Runs better with each patch, and the battles on the new patch from today look visually 100 times better...
Having a great campaign as the Macedonians. First and only campaign so far. Great fun.
Has so much potential, just hope CA give a lot more love and attention to us guys in the future.

Loving it except for the fact it's not that much of a challenge. I've been just fighting armies filled with spear levy's and slingers.
You are not alone buddy. I am playing the game and enjoying it a lot, but that's only cause i got a filthy expensive graphics card. I do hate CA however, for being so stupid to release the game with so many bugs, just to steal people's money. And I do hate CA for making a game that won't function on any but the top gaming rigs.
Well my friend, That is because it takes a few thousand years to research technologies. And unlike you managerial skill in researching and advancing, the AI is struggling to advance in research yet manage an economy and expand militarily. Yes yes the folks at CA are ing geniuses I know.
