can you give me a little info on the most popular mods ?

Hi I am considering modding rome total war to see what it is like. to be honest I am just playing custom battles at the minute against the PC but Would be interested to no what the most popular mods are that people. use.

Is it possible to....

1. make this game run a little smother on my laptop with a mod ?

mmmmh... consider that the vanilla version is the best in term of performance, any mod that I know can give you little slowdown, some mods are really a kill for slow pc, while in others, the performance is the same.
I use Terrae Expungnandae by Lusted, and with this mod I haven't noticed any slowdown from the vanilla version.

Dath mod improveds the performance due to some tweaking Darth did himself, it also has the best AI and as such harder battles so try that one.

RTR: Large amount of provinces quite close together, now bug free in the PE version 6 with several expansions
EB: Ultra-realistic mod, known for advanced scripting such as supply lines, not quite finished but close
SPQR: Very large map meaning larger distances between settlements, massive multi-full-stack armies to throw around
TE: Good unit skins and mapping nearer the vannilla then other versions
Res Gestae: Amazing skins, only romans presently releaced
Darth: Impressive AI advances, AI more intelligent in battle, added coding also allows more interesting battle advances
NTW2: For a completly new feel of warfare, this mod, though still buggy, is a great change from the usual

Arthurian: Total War, which has recently been released, is also very much worth a try. It's a total conversion of Vanilla Rome, sporting a large and detailed campaign map of the British Isles and a large chunk of northern France (well, Gaul), lots and lots of new units, amazing research into the time-period (481 AD to 685 AD) and a whole lot of interesting factions (most of which I had never heard of before) like Dyfneint (who get king Arthur! ).
