    Default Civil war from hell

I was merrily playing my Sparta campaign, slowly and steadly expanding my empire, food, finances and civil unrest were all going well...

Then, all of a sudden and without (!) warning, BAM - civil war!

I was like, what the bloody hell? My capital instantly turned hostile and eight (!) full stacked rebel armies appeared around it! And since my home region is also my main recruitment region, those armies were all top notch - Spartan Hoplites and Pikemen, heavy citizen cavalry, even advanced artillery and mercenary Cretan bowmen... my jaw dropped, my cozy campaign for conquest turned into a battle of survival all of a sudden. Besides some small garrison forces, I only have two full stack armies in the field, one of them was immidietly called home, the other one is bound fighting far away in the east, as my enemies will not accept my offer of peace now that I am weakened.

In Greece, I recruited every General I had left, hired all the mercenaries there were and already lost most of them trying to defend Pella, which barely fought off the onslaught of two full stack Spartan armies only to get crushed the same turn by another force of that size. All this while one full stack marches North and another nortwest, heading for the other two cities in Macedon while, and another three full stacks siege Athens, only held by its garrison and my main fleet which I managed to pull in the port, while the two stacks I managed to fend off lick their wounds in the backlands and are healing up already. I scrap together every fighting man I can, deplete my saved-up stash of over 30.000 coins in two turns and have a -6000 income waiting for me. My edicts get deleted as my provinces break up which furthers civil unrest in regions I just liberated from the rebels.

Finally, my one elite stack army landed on Greece shore and managed to take the capital back... still having to deal with the main forces 4x or more their size while only supported by some quickly recruited mercenaries and the leftover homeland defense force.

Oh man, civil war... I read on this forum this feature wasnt really a big deal, but this? This seems to be the ultimate butt-kicker there is. Like a Mongol invasion starting in your capital city. Is it really supposed to be like that?

Playing on hard, vanilla version (for now)

So what you're telling me is that, CA still lets rebels spawn more troops than are physically capable of being recruited and/or sustained by a player in a campaign.

I'm sure your war had something to do with the still mysterious faction system. In my Sparta campaign the "other families" are gaining power despite not having any actual characters.............

Glad that *feature* made it in.

Pah! You think you've got problems buddy? THIS is a civil war from hell! How on earth am I going to defeat that lot? Even if I abandon the frontier, which I can't do because I've lost three provinces this same turn to huge Eravisci armies, I'll still be out numbered. And by the time my Legions mass for the push into Italia, I'll likely have lost the entire peninsula if not more!

So to avoid this, (unless you want the challenge of some decent stacks because the AI factions don't field any) do you have to keep the balance around 60-40 either way?
My main campaign is Roman, and I spend time and money keeping my faction balanced, I have not gone over 60% power in my favour, and try and keep it around 50%.
At what point does it become critical?

Is that a bug? Is that the way the Civil War is supposed to work? That is silly. With a single faction they should have just had a certain percentage of your existing armies go rogue. Perhaps sometimes they would be united, and other times it could be everybody against everybody.

Well, yeah...but I love the feeling when something like this happen and your legion are facing such a powerI guess I was lucky that my senators deploy their forces by borderd in Norricum, so i could call two legions back to Rome, before they get there -.-

I said it before... Realm Divide Rome Style. It's tiring when every clan declare war, and send all their armies to you, so they decided to skip all that and dump an equivalent amount right in your face.

The guy that thought up Realm Divide obviously wasn't fired but given a ing promotion and put in charge of the political system of Rome 2.

A system that makes almost no ing sense because every move you make costs you support whilst at the same time support constantly decreases despite running a campaign without a single actual defeat. I got 20 enemy stacks on the other side of the world. My armies can't even get to em in 20 turns.

The system doesn't even make sense for some factions.

You have the Elder chiefs and the Other chiefs.

Who the are these nobody Other Chiefs? There could be literally 10 different bannermen clans in there all serving the Elder Chiefs, who themselves also consist of a bunch of random clans banding together. How the does civil war even work when you have a goddamned council? Is it council against council?

    WHY?

heh i had about 10-12 stacks (high quality units yea, my military recruitment was in my cap too) rebel as parthia, all my armies was away near greek states/africa. Thankfully the broken AI couldn't handle crappy garrison forces, though they did take 2 cities. However mercenary armies mopped them up heh. In my current campaign as egypt im going to dismantle my military buildings now to prevent that from happening, i also didnt expand into asia yet so got 3 stacks waiting for the civil war to pop up

I just finished my civil war as Rome, I think it just spawns a copy of your current military distributed across your current max number of generals (but without any experience or upgrades, which makes them sort of a pushover if you actually manage to bring your veteran armies together). Which I guess suggests that it might be best to start it as early as possible. Other than that the main strategy for dealing with the civil war seems to be making sure that your core regions aren't heavily focused on wealth or food production so that the rebels immediately start suffering attrition.

Leads to some pretty epic battles though, the game changer for me was one with over 11,000 troops total. Saved the replay but those appear to be bugged at the moment (apparently the AI remembers that fight playing out far differently than I do).

I am playing as Pontus and also had this mechanic kick in with no warning and no idea why it happened (it spawned approximately 14 stacks from my recruiting province). I assumed that the other, more fleshed out factions had some explanation, but now I'm guessing they do not. I can tell you that I eventually won the civil war. I had 3 full stacks nearby, because I had Asia Minor as my peaceful front line while my attacking armies went east to the edge of India. I only won after bringing back 1/2 of my stacks from Sarmatia, 2 stacks from Parthia, and recruiting a fourth stack of in Asia minor full of mercenaries to help corrall the armies overrunning that area. The war ended when I took the last rebel province (in Scythia, no less) - but the rebels still had 2 full stacks that just disappeared. I was playing on Hard.

I had a luck with my last civil war as romans on legendary.
They spawned not in rome instead they took athens i just conquered 1 turn before. If i remember right 12 stacks, i had my 6 veteran legions between them, that were funny battles enemys and allies were reinforcing from every direction on the battlemap possible^^

It should have been your own armies that have rebelled against you not spawn +12 new armies. This is just ridiculous.
