Icon6 HELLENIC LEAGUE MOD (MORE NEW SHIELD DESIGNS AND MORE NEW ARMOR!!!) ver1.6 /UPDATED - 14.01.2014/

I originally made this mod for myself, because I was annoyed by the general look of the Greek units in Rome 2, and decided to something about it. Those who have been following it since the start; know that the mod have come a long way since it's original release, thanks to this forum and user feedback. IMPORTANT: This mod is entirely my preference and it is not a historical mod! It's rather a plausibly historical mod, so while the changes are not historical, I'm trying to stay within acceptable boundaries. I'm also aware that this won't appeal to everyone's taste. I decided to share it here so like minded individuals can download it. Now that I got that out of my system, I present to you, my Hellenic League mod.

The mod basically makes Greek units look more like a professional army, where each unit has some sort of 'standard issue' equipment. Because of this idea, the mod takes away a little from the vanilla unit variety, in order to give the units the more uniformed look, while still trying to preserve some of it(No Clone armies here don't worry). Most of you know that CA didn't do anything wrong from a historical standpoint when designing the Greek units, as during this period, every soldier had to bring his own equipment to war, thus inevitably making a very colourful and varied army. This is fine and all, but I just didn't like it, so this is my personal take on the Greek armies. Also, let's be honest...the moment you start the game with a Greek State, you WILL change history, so why not change it a little more?

The mod also gives the Major Greek states the ability to form an alliance called 'Hellenic League'. This works much like the barbarian factions' ability to form confederations. AND as a bonus, the mod ads a few new units to the Greek roster which are very logical additions if you read the story.

    Feature Summary:
    - A complete Re-Skin of the Greek roster
    - New units complimenting the alternate Greek history (with their own unique UNIT CARDS)
    - Ability for the Greeks to form an alliance (not complete but it works). This isn't easy, as the Greek factions tend to dislike each other. When someone joins your confederation, your faction will be renamed to Hellenic League, but otherwise, everything stays the same. /This is all that can be done atm, as after digging through all the tables I didn't find anything to indicate that there is more to this mechanic. Even with the vanilla barbarian factions, your faction icon and color will stay the same when you form a confederation. So confederations are not treated by the game as unique factions. I really hope that CA changes this soon, as it would open up really cool new possibilities for the game./
    - Makes the 3 vanilla thorax units(Swordsmen, Hoplites, Pikemen) available to the four major Greek factions.
    - Adds unit progression, so your early units can be upgraded to their respective thorax counterparts when they become available. (example: Pikemen -> Thorax Pikemen; Hoplites -> Thorax Hoplites; Citizen Cavalry -> Thorax Spear Cavalry; etc...) The upgrades costs money though, and it can vary for different units.

Vengurd made a nice little story for you guys, to help put this mod into perspective and explain the changes I made to unit equipment. Read the story if you want an explanation, and if you're fine with the changes, just skip the story and enjoy the mod (it's a good story though so read it anyway)

The Story: The death of Alexander the Great left the Greek States, whom, even before the loss of the man, were unstable, without a leader. The preceding years saw the total and utter collapse of the Macedonian Empire, but not necessarily it's ideals. Having met Romans on the field of battle and in the court of diplomacy, the Greek States stopped their almost constant in-fighting and decided a unified front against these new latin foes was needed. Rather than join into a single nation, or even pick a leader, the Greeks all agreed to fund and provide a unified military and cultural alliance against the Roman threat, reviving the reforms of Alexander and his father, issuing standard equipment, requiring matching field gear and years of service to the Greek Alliance.

The effort to unify and to enforce the reforms took time, especially for Sparta whom had never been a part of the original Hellenic Alliance. Around 250 BC, even Sparta was well integrated with the other Greek States, all of which were finalizing these changes in the form of tiered formations, more traditional units made up the lower tiers while less traditional units borrowed heavily from their Roman counter-parts were near the top, possibly the Greek's way of silently acknowledging Roman Military superiority before taking it for themselves.

What this accomplished militarily also met economic ends; a standardized military generally meant fewer types of the same items and allowed skilled craftsmen to produce many more quality weapons at a higher rate, using a set amount of resources, which kept the prices steady and, for the most part, cheap. This coupled with the fortunes of trade and war allowed the Greek States to field more soldiers and expand at a rate that matched the Roman's nearly step for step.

    Athens/Common Pool Greek Units

Common Greek units / TIER 1 / Militia Grade (Quickly trained and recruited from the countryside equipped lightly.)

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Militia Hoplites

    Javelinmen

    Slingers

Archers (I added a helm on them so they look like actual soldiers)

    Skirmisher Cavalry

Common Greek units / TIER 2 / Citizen Grade (Drawn from the citizens of the different polises and equipped as soldiers should be)

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Peltast (or Heavy Peltasts as I like to call them)

Light Peltasts (with all new 'Hellenic Skirmisher' armor)

Hoplites (With the new shield designs, shield variety is through the roof. You can barely find two guys with the same shield in a unit.)

    Pikemen

Citizen Cavalry (They also got new shields)

    Tarantine Cavalry

Common Greek units / TIER 3 / Thorax Units (They are the result of the combined efforts of Hellenic League members. Equipped and trained to counter the roman threat)
From TIER 3, units use the Xiphos instead of the Kopis and they got a new armor too; a combination of the Roman chain and the Greek linothorax armor -> the chain linothorax armor (it's not historical but works really well in this mod.)

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Thorax Swordsman

    Thorax Hoplites

Thorax Pikemen (They got back their pikemen shields)

Common Greek units / TIER 4 / Elite Units

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Hippeus Lancers

    Epirus specific units

I made a custom Chalcidian Helmet for the royal units, and given them better capes to make them look even more royal.

    Hellenic Royal Cavalry

    Hellenic Royal Guard

Agrianian Axemen (They're the same unit as the light peltast but they fight with an axe instead of the kopis)

    Macedon Specific Units

I given all of their elite units the hoplons with the macedonian sun symbol, so shield variety is not their strong suit. (I hope someone will make some new shield symbols in the near future)

    Companion Cavalry

    Aspis Companion Cavalry

Foot Companions (+they wield a Xiphos, and they got a companion cloak)

    Thessalian Cavalry

    Sarissa Cavalry

Royal Peltasts (all with epic metallic beards, IMO the best looking helmet in the game )

    Shield Bearers

    Spartan units

Spartan Units /TIER 1/ Helot Units

Spartan Units /TIER 2/ Perioikoi Units

Spartan Units /TIER 3/ Spartan Citizen Units

I'm tired will do them tommorrow

Spartan Units /TIER 4/ Elite Units

HELLENIC LEAGUE UNIT PACK_1 DESCRIPTION AND SCREENSHOTS

    Greek Choppers/Light Swordsmen
/I've seen them in the 2004 movie 'Alexander'. They appear in the final big battle at the end of the movie and I decided to make them, as they're a great addition to the early roster of the Greeks. They can be recruited until the lvl 3 heavy barracks is built, from which point they can be upgraded to Thorax Swordsmen//They got renamed to light swordsmen in v1.4/

    Early Hoplites

/They wear all bronze equipment and this one is for the Corinthian enthusiasts They're slightly stronger than the Veteran Hoplites, and have the upkeep cost of roughly two standard hoplite units. This is needed because they're a strong unit and could upset balance if they were cheap. They can be recruited until the lvl 3 heavy barracks is built. But cannot be upgraded. Since v1.4 they can be recruited as Generals too/

    Thorax Spear Cavalry

/They're a direct upgrade of the Citizen Cavalry unit. After Thorax units become available to your faction, you can upgrade your Citizen Cavalry to this unit./

    Thorax Sword Cavalry

/To make the late game Greek cavalry even more formidable, here is the Thorax Sword Cavalry. They can be recruited after resarching "Hellenisation" in the military management tree./

THE NEW SHIELD DESIGNS (THERE IS 45 OF THEM)

It took me a lot of time and effort to make these, so be gentle when criticizing them Still, I'd appreciate some insight on what I did wrong from someone who knows these things

    PROGRESSION PATH

Citizen Cavalry >>> Thorax Spear Cavalry
    Pikemen >>> Thorax Pikemen
    Hoplites >>> Thorax Hoplites
    Periokoi Spears >>> Thorax Hoplites
    Periokoi Pikemen >>> Thorax Pikemen
    Periokoi Hoplites >>> Thorax Hoplites
    Light Hoplites >>> Thorax Hoplites
    Militia Hoplites >>> Thorax Hoplites
    Spartan Hoplites >>> Thorax Hoplites
    Spartan Pikemen >>> Thorax Pikemen
    Thureos Hoplites >>> Thorax Hoplites
    Thureos Spears >>> Thorax Hoplites
Greek Chopper (New unit) >>> Thorax Swordsmen

The Pike, Sword and Cavalry upgrades are available when you research the Hellenisation technology in the Military management tree. The thorax hoplites become available after the research of the Remuneration reforms. These are in line with the vanilla game. Also, depending on the initial training level of the unit, it might cost more for certain units to be upgraded to their modern versions.

    Recommended mods

    1. Ancient Colors Mod - it changes tunic colors of all factions in the game to more natural looking ones. This one is a must if you ask me.
    2. LuciferHawk's R2:TW GEM mod , improves the game's graphics by a HUGE deal, go ahead and download it. Another must have mod.
    3. 2TPY/4TPY mods and their extensions (TECH & BUILD 2TPY), they can be found on these forums. This mod is much more fun if you really have to go through the standardization process and you can't rush it.
    4. Professional Carthaginian Army Mod - An extension of the Hellenic League mod for Carrthage. If you like this one you'll love that too.

    Compatiblity

It should be compatible with anything that doesn't modify the same variantmeshes as this mod. (Basically it won't be compatible with other Greek Re-skins) It's also compatible with all patches.

    Translations

The mod is available in the following languages too: Italian, Spanish, Czech, German, French, Russian and Polish. Head over to the UPC Project's thread and download the language you need, and don't forget to give thanks and reputation to Radious and SwissHalbaldier (and the other translators) for their awesome work. They did an amazing job. I would also like to thank Aragorn-Elessar for his Italian translation; Draikz for his Spanish translation;and the rest of the UPC team for all the others translations. Cheers guys!

    The Future

Next update will feature even more new shield patterns, and I'll try to think of new some new units (I might need some help with that one).

    Installation

After downloading, open the .rar file with WINRAR or 7zip, and follow the instructions found there! Everything you can possibly need to use this mod is there.

I think the archer hats are fine if that is what they wore in those days. Methinks is was to keep the sun out of thier eyes.

Macedon shares most of it's unit pool with Athens, so it shouldn't take to much time to make a mod.

I'm planning to do all Greek states, but I thought it is better to start with common pool units. So, yeah, sure.

Well, I'm not saying that this will be the most historically accurate mod, it's just something that was bothering me, and I decided to do something about it. I'll do my best not to break immersion, so there won't be full plate armored slingers and such. Also, I like the variety too, but not this much of it.

Okay so here are some more of the common pool greek units

    Changelog:
-Added Hippeus Lancers (Better Armor and more Oronate Helmets)
-Added Pikemen (Standard helmets and greaves, and different looking bronze shields)
-Added Peltasts/Light Peltasts (standard helmets, and changed the thueros shield, to a round one)
-Added Militia Hoplites (the only change is that they all use plain bronze hoplons now)

I'm finished with the common pool units

    Changelog:
    - Added bronze greaves to peltasts (essentially making them heavy peltasts); no changes to light peltasts so there is a big distinction between them now
    - Added a simple pylos helmet to archers and removed the linothorax, so they'll keep their peasantly look, but look like that they're soldiers

    Screenshots
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Peltasts (heavy)

    Archers

Please leave feedback, if you don't like something, so it can be changed. I want this to be as widely acceptable as possible, because I'm destroying some of the variety here

Also I started working on the Macedon specific units, I think they need a bit more work but here is a beta version until then

    Included in the pack:

    Cavalry:
-Companion Cavalry (Standard Equipment: Crested Boeotian Helmet, Elite Greaves) note: After doing some research, I found that Macedonian elite cavalry used this type of helm during and after Alexander's rule
-Aspis Companion Cavalry (Standard Equipment: Same as Companion cavalry + Aspis Shield /w Macedonian Sun symbol)
-Thessalian Cavalry (Standard Equipment: Crested Konoss Helm) note: I removed their capes, so companion cavalry looks even more elite
-Sarissa Cavalry (Standard Equipment: Basic Phrygian Helm) note: I removed their capes, so companion cavalry looks even more elite

Infantry:-Shield Bearers (Standard Equipment: Unique Crested Thracian Helm made by me, Elite Greaves, Hoplon Shield /w Macedonian Sun symbol) note: I think their armor is not right yet, I'll probably change it in the next release
-Royal Peltasts (Standard Equipment: Crested Phrygian Helm, Elite Greaves, Hoplon Shield /w Macedonian Sun symbol)

    Screenshots
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Aspis Companion Cav

    Royal Peltasts

    Shield Bearers

I'll update it tommorrow with much better looking Shield Bearers, and add Foot Companions to the mix

good work, but i dont like the idea, lad
its simply unhistorical, as every soldier had to provide his own equipment that was mostly given from father to son or grandfather to grandson, if the father was still in service.
so there was a huge variety of different helmet and armour types and shields were individualized anyways.
