Don't feel like building siege equipment? Just burn the gate!

What the title says. Not sure if I like this feature. It's too easy to beat the AI with. Even with lots of missile troops on the walls, it seems the AI is unlikely to stop you pulling this trick.

So what's the point of siege equipment if you can just do this?

I didn't even know that you can do that. I just assumed that you need proper siege equipment to take the city. Time to try and burn some gates.

Ladders are still much more effective. The problem with burning down the gates is, that you have to go where the gates are. With ladders you can go practically everwhere, which will make it much harder for the enemy to defend. But I get your point. I never really used equipment simply because it's not necessary. Some improvements there would be pretty nice but won't be game changing. Mods -> Yes , Official -> No.

They should just remove this feature, sieges are rare enough as it is. And this feature makes them even less enjoyable (too easy).

This feature is RETARDED. It should take at least one turn until a siege battle to take place so the enemy has time to relieve the siege. Blitz sieges piss me off. Gives you no time to react to an invasion and it is just incredibly unrealistic.

The thing is, there are at least three gates to every city and the AI does not cover all of them.So far I have only experiences this as the defender. The AI attacked only one gate but somehow managed to get three units to stand on top of each other in a big blob. My missile units were strangely ineffective and the gate was easily burned down. After that the whole AI army charged through the gate to where my spear unit was waiting. Instead of engaging though they seemed to try and just push through taking horrendous casualties in the process and routing soon afterwards.Very strange!

Because have you tried burning down a higher level gate? Your troops will get stuck there for like, 10 minutes waiting for it to burn down as they pelt you. And if they have Burning Oil and choke you at the gate? Except to lose a LOT of troops.

Siege equipment makes the process infinintely faster, and safer, at the expense of losing men to attrition, and of course, risking reinforcements approaching.

Personally, I didn't mind this feature in Shogun 2 because the sieges were completly different, but here it makes no sense at all, and it encourages the AI to siege that way.

It made sense in Shogun as sieges were largely inaccurate / made to work for particular gameplay. It's also more believable on S2 art as castles were modeled from surviving Japanese castles, not extensive earthworks, trenches, wooden palisades that were erected prior to the siege by both sides - it looks correct in art, for small wooden gate to burn down in minutes (though incorrect as attackers would have to run through rain of missile fire and hop over fences, moats and fight through patrolling troops to get to that gate). Rome II - giant gates made of treated timbers catches fire from a thrown / infinite torches and burns down in less than a minute. Looks stupid and fake, historical accuracy or not. Lazy.

So far I have not attacked a single walled city, I have had plenty of those town battles(seem to be all I do) but by the time I get to a big walled city, like rome, antioch alexandria, the city has only a garrison and so I just auto resolve it, Not had a single epic siege battle.

I thought I read somewhere in-game that if you burn gates they ebcome unusable for all factions in the battle! That is why I have never tried to do it and always waited for siege equipment. So you are saying if you burn it you can pass right through like a gentleman?

What I dislike is that after 150 turns now, I've yet to see the AI bring siege equipment to a Siege battle... They are ALWAYS trying to burn down the gate, and like 40% of the time they are standing outside my gates, in a blob, bugged and ain't even burning down the gate... I got my battle time on 60 minutes, and I've just speeded up the match and went AFK so many times when this happens, they are so bugged when it comes to burning down the gates, probably won 10+ siege battles where 0 of my units have died and a few hundred of theirs because of my ranged units... It's ridiculous.

I don't like it, but only because it makes it too easy for me to beat the enemy attackers. When I besiege cities, I never try to simply burn down the gate because such an action is ill-advised at best. I had cities relying on weakened garrisons that'd beat away entire enemy armies because they were too impatient to make siege equipment and instead ran at easy chokepoints where boiling oil would pour over their heads consistently as they ran towards a wall of spears. It seems convenient to the AI, but it's rather easy to defend against if you're a half-decent commander.

Funny thing:They even kept the "stuff near gate dies when gate reaches 0%" mechanic from Shogun 2. So you have your 8 meter high stone wall and a bunch of archers firing above the gate. Your gate gets set ablaze by a single peasant throwing a torch at it, and once the door reaches the magical 0% number in health all your archers above the gate get a sudden heart attack.

I burned the gates of Carthage, however they had boiling oil....it killed pretty much half of my army before I decided to quit.
