Thread: The fall of Syracuse - Rome II finally in all it's glory

Default The fall of Syracuse - Rome II finally in all it's glory

Remember that early build Carthage demo? It was truly spectacular, and to think then our biggest worry was too much bloom and screen tearing! Ha! I just played a battle that felt just like that video...epic. Like in that video, I wasn't worried about the odd individual getting killed, or insanely micromanaging my forces; I focused on the bigger plot - huge sweeping flanking attacks, broad assaults and managing the lines. I truly hope others are able to experience the same feeling. I would go so far as to say this is the best feeling I have ever had from a total war game (I have had all from Rome on wards). But I digress. To experience this sadly requires more than one army, so can be a bit rare in the campaign. Luckily for me, playing as Rome on legendary, after capturing Corsica I managed to barter a non-aggression barrier with the Northern Guals, allowing me to march South with two almost fully stacked armies, towards Syracuse. This is quite some turns in, as both the Etruscan League and Carthage (and her numerous bloomin allies) gave me quite some grief P.S. Try playing on legendary for yourself; it's challenging and bloody fun Before I carry on, I just want to say that, through the muck, there is gold in this game. While I can't truly portray the awesome feeling being a commander of such a battle, I will try to show it as best I can in a battle report. Be warned, many, many pictures lay ahead.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
First legion of Italy led by S. Clodius Strabo waits patiently for the Third Legion of Corsica, led by G. Ulpius Lanatius, reinforcing for the North.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Together, the combined forces make up roughly 5000 soldiers. The base garrison in Syracuse is roughly 3000, with another 1000 reinforcing by boat.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
As the boats draw closer to the shore, skirmishers are quickly sent forward to shower the landing craft. However, upon landing the reinforcements quickly rush to the town, fearful of the oncoming might of Rome.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
One ship of slingers stays behind to cover the retreat of the other landing forces, their precise aim piercing the gaps between shields.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The Velitaes are quickly sent forward, and shower the boat and it's crew with fire.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The Roman forces move towards the city. The ship crumbled under the punishment, taking with it the tortured crew.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
As they draw closer, the Syracusan's defenses become visible. Lines of spears block the narrow streets, and the open market area is defended by lines of infantry and skirmishers.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
As the Romans move into the town, the first line of skirmishers is pelted by a unit of slingers, protected by a unit of spear infantry. This unit looks on at the Romans, cheering to the whistle of rocks flying over their heads.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The defenders in the market square charge at the Velitaes showering them with javelins. The skirmishers retreat behind their infantry lines, who the Syracusans crash into.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The warriors cheer as reinforcing Hatasti units rush to encircle the defenders.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Meanwhile, cavalry flanks to the right to a ridge overlooking the city.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
A defending unit breaks and flees towards the town center.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
As the battle at the market rages on, the unit of slingers from before grows overconfident and runs forward, past their defensive lines, to get a better shot at the Velitaes. They are instead met by a unit of experienced Principies, who after dispatching them, push into the city.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Reserve Syracusan units rush towards the marketas the fight continues.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
On the far left of the city, a handful of units pushes forward, taking advantage of the little defenses, most of whom were called to aid the market battle.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The battle at the market is slowly being won. Syracuse's final infantry reserves are sent in.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The left flank pushes forward, keen to get into the action.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
At the market, the defense is finally crumbling, allowing for the reserves to move in. A desperate final last stand ensues.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The cavalry spots the undefended skirmisher reserves near the shore and form up on the beach, ready to attack.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The battle on the left continues, neither side gaining much ground until a unit of Hatasti pushes through the defense.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The battle at the market is over. The Roman forces move to reinforce the left.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The cavalry charges, butchering everything that survives the impact.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The battle on the left continues. Slingers are easily cut down, but some stalwart infantry remains in the fight.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
With reinforcements on the way however, it is only a matter of time before the defenders are all killed, and fleeing Syracusans run down.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
While the Romans won decisively, both sides suffered heavy casualties.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I hoped you enjoyed this, and I hope you can all experience this. For me, that one battle was worth the entire £30.

Nice. We need some good AARs by people with imagination to fill in the blanks with this game.

Is there a mod to remove this "brilliant artistic decision " 300 filter yet?

It only looks like that because it's late in the day. Here's one from midday:

Seeing these screenshots, one could almost forget 90% of the experience of playing Rome II's campaign. Highly entertaining, Lord-Fisher, and artfully crafted. Are you using any visual mods or is this all vanilla Rome II on Extreme settings?

I particularly liked this screenshot, derp face in the back notwithstanding.

Don't they have any walls in Syracuse? This was the greatest fortress of the world!

that midday shot my god...its so beautiful.

but graphical glitches aside the general (damn it's hard to say that word without it being a pun on these forums) graphics seem to look pretty good so i don't know why people complain about it so much (but then again people were angry at shogun 2 for this as well)

Great battle, but man this city ... is Syracuse ? It seems to me that this is just a greek village !

Lovely to see some people not whining about the bugs and enjoying the game!

Wish the AI was as good against me.

Nice battle story but graphics look like garbage thanks to all the aliasing and poor unit models on medium/far distance (closeups are fine in the engine). Extreme settings wouldn't help btw.

Sorry but this is meaningless to me, I am glad that your enjoying the game but would have preferred a video of the battle. This is what I would have expected from CA before the release a series of screen shots.

And even though the screens look pretty they dont tell me anything about how the AI behaved or what it did, thanks for taking the time to post and I hope you dont think I am being ungrateful that is not the intention, looking forward to a video of one of your battles as that one seemed to be enjoyable.

    Cheers Modestus.
