It doesn't work for me. It says 978mb for me. I did everything you said with the Shogun 2 thing and these are my lines:
    gfx_video_memory 1538260992; # gfx_video_memory <int>, Override available video memory (bytes) #
    gfx_unlimited_video_memory false; # gfx_unlimited_video_memory <bool>, Enable unlimited video memory allocation #

Sorry Achilleslastand , not sure what the fix is for 2GB VRAM cards, my friend has one and no fix has eliminated his lag. The fix i provided removed lag with my 1GB VRAM card. (it basically provides the ability to use a setting between USE LIMITED VRAM and USE UNLIMITED VRAM. )

EDIT: saw someone on the official forums report improvement with a negative number like -2048000000 .Doesn't make sense to me unless CA config system converts negative numbers to positive (signed /unsigned conversion programming thing.)

What is your system RAM / CPU / Video card and what kind of lag are you getting ??

Biggy , thanks for reporting that , it confirms a suspicion of mine that there is a signed/unsigned conversion problem going on:

    Can you try gfx_video_memory -22020095; (2027*1024*1024-2147483647=-22020095)

and also , if that doesn't help , try

    gfx_video_memory 1572864000;

Do report back if it help, as so far AFAIK there is no good fix for 2GB VRAM cards.

nope. gfx_video_memory -22020095; and gfx_video_memory 1572864000; doesnt work neighter. Still laging.

I would advise staying with gfx_video_memory 0; and unchecked use unlimited VRAM (gfx_unlimited_video_memory false; ) ,texture quality high , with all setting at very high or below. Also unchecking AA helps fps a lot.

Thank you for your answer, I really appreciate you taking the time to try to help me. I have 8 gigs of RAM, AMD x4 955 @ 3,2GHz and Nvidia 450 GTS (1gb). It lags like crazy on the campaign map. I get 15-20 frames per second and battles work just fine. I get 40-60 frames in battles.

Your video card is a little underpowered compared to mine, but otherwise the rig looks more powerful.
I haven't faced campaign map lag, anyway heres what i suggest based on my personal experiences with the game and what i have read on the forums.

*Install latest WHQL or beta nvidia drivers.
*Install DirextX from the rome 2 folder.
*Use The gfx_ settings in my original post. (or try lowering the VRAM number a bit , i suggest checking 1.3*1000*1024*1024 , in case there is some swapping occurring , the lower number MAY help.)
*Tweak game settings: AA off, textures - high, water sky terrain - medium, Alpha vegitation off, unit detail low (raise it to very high , if your lag goes away.), grass-tress very high, DOF low or off.
*A good rule of thumb is , set your settings to get 25-30 average fps in benchmark, this generally means an ok running game.
*The final suggestion that provides huge fps boost , but makes the game look like ***, is lower your resolution to 1280x.... or 1200x... .

None of those things helped. :/ I did everything you said and I got a couple of frames more. And lowering all of my settings didn't help at all. I guess I just have to wait and hope they'll release a patch that makes the game playable for me. Thanks for your help.

Can someone post their ultra setting script file?

"gfx_video_memory 1572864000" worked for me. I've a Ati 7870 Ghz editon 2Gb. My fps in battle is 45-50 solid on ultra settings even with many units clashing at same spot.

I'm not that sure though if the patch had some sort of effect on smothiness too. But worth a try anyways. Thanks alot OP, amazing how a great game get penalites for such stupid stuff.

Hi FinkPloyd, I wonder if this will help me, if I have 7950 OC card (3GB of VRAM)..is there any difference between those 2gb and 3gb cards?

A 3GB card like the HD7950's have more graphics memory than this game could ever use, and the game correctly identifies the amount on my own card. No need to apply any particular settings.

I also have a 7950 OC. Did the equation using 3gb, and the game displays 480mb video ram. Where did I go wrong?

Firstly don't think this fix will help you.

Secondly due to some weird reason to represent anything more than approximately 2 GB, you need a negative number as gfx memory in the config.
