I never meant to encourage a helter-skelter release.
What I did mean is that if we can compile a mere patch with all the bug fixes for SS 6.4 and whatever visual improvements in the models or elsewhere, it would be, in my opinion, worth releasing
and we would still be able to work on it to compile improved, richer releases of it as soon as newer models are turned out.

Should we do that, then, I suspect, we would have a rally point for volunteers, a wider pool of human resources to join forces with us.

Think insurrection strategy: we initially only fight those "battles" we are confident -and nearly certain- we can win.
Once good publicity is produced, more people will rally to our cause, adding resources at our disposal and broadening the scope of what is feasible from that point on.
Then, more ambitious goals can be set without compromising pragmatism with regard to what is achievable.

(I actually do have real military training)
Thats the plan buddy. Not going to finish all units before release, just working on them as other aspects of the mod are finished.

Just a WiP and no they are not going to be red-haired but this is one of the head models they'll be sporting.
I know that peasants are unglamorous but they are the basis for every unit type of the first tier of troops, levy archers, javelineers and levy spearmen.
Since the player who will chose to start a campaign with ERE will be seeing a lot of them fellas, let them be looking sharp.
More pics in a few days...

Sheepskin? That would look cool. Makes sense also since its very probably that they used them. Although they would be very dirty from use. Not all white.

Wouldn't that be wool? don't flay a poor sheep when you can just shave it for the wool hehe

It doesn't have to be white though, there were some colour dyes back in day not mentioning sheep wool natural colour variations from whitey to brown and then to black.

They are going to be the basis for the first tier of ERE units and also would make sense to use them for Siculo-Greek peasant levy.
All opinions are respected but so far you seem to be a minority (of one).

This is for now, they still need quite some work, e.g. more lower legs, sashes, belts, headpieces, certain textures for me to make seemless, at least a few more heads, their pitchforks and last -but absolutely not least- their normal maps.

By the way, for their first (and probably only) upgrade would you rather have them with leather lamellar/scale or padded, or maybe a mix of both?

As always, discussion on your feedback is expected to be very interesting...

Mix of both sounds good, but if your giving them an armor upgrade shouldn't you consider given a respectable weapon? I recall reading that peasants in the medieval period had knives, bows and spears when it came to weapons use since those were cheap compared to a fine sword and armor.

This model will make up the basis for all the models of the "first tier" of ERE, including at least peasant levies, peasant spearmen ("contarati" in SS), peasant archers (levy archers in SS-IIRC) and javelineers (acontistae).
So they are going to have such weapons as you suggested.

Though when it comes to acontistae I am ambivalent on whether the regular army relied on peasants for a role that sometimes was crucial.
If I were to have it my way all the peasant troops would be the hastily-conscripted-auxilia for the foot acritae and the foot acritae would be heavy infantry, in all likelyhood dismounted pronoiars, while the castrophylakae (castle keepers/guards) would be a missile unit with decent melee capabilities.
It is, however, unlikely for us to deviate from the original SS roster.

Now, for the peasant-peasant levy I do plan to throw in a real spear in addition to their pitchforks, so I got you covered there buddy.

    @ Larkin:

Pleased to see you are entertained, this place had always been about fun anyway.
