Answers:
1. Er heißt Friedrich.
2. Er ist Deutscher.
3. Er spielt gern Fußball und Schach, aber er liest lieber.
4. Es ist spät. (or: Er geht nach Hause, weil es spät ist).

Common mistakes were with the word order. "Gern(e)" can come either after the verb or after the object. For example, you can either use what it says in number 3 or you can say "Er spielt Fußball und Schach gern..." Also, some of you were a little bit slacking on the assignment. Though assignments may be a simple completion grade, know that these are intended to help you. It's to your own benefit to complete them diligently. I don't give you assignments and tests in order to trick you or to grade you, but to make sure you're learning.
