"And what of the Patriarch?" Orsini asked. "Will we be securing the Hagia Sofia?" Philip knew of his desire, but Orsini also knew they were a small group, perhaps every man would be needed at the palace. Jacopo wished to capture the Patriarch before the man fled, and the man who captured the centre of the Orthodox faith would be celebrated throughout all the halls of the Vatican, undermining the bastard who currently sat the throne of St. Peter, and strengthening Orsini's own hand.

Alencon nodded slightly. "If we can," he responded simply.
His only fears were the possibility of finding the Emperor's Guards lying in wait. But he hadn't told anyone about that.

Jacopo's eyes twinkled at the thought. "That is all a man can ask, my son. For now I shall simply follow you to battle. If we need our men together than I shall gladly support you until we secure the area. Once that occurs I will be headed to Hagia Sophia. I must capture the Patriarch." He looks at the other assembled commanders. "For our Holy Mother Church of course." His smile could have cut through armour. "Will there be ought else Sir Philip?"

Cristoforo chuckled, noting the Father's smile. "We are all here for our love of god," he replied in French so that D'Alencon would understand it as well. "Or was it gold? I can never separate these two in the Lingua Franca."

"Anyways," he then turned to the commander, "we should use my crossbowmen to eliminate any sentries on the walls before attempting to climb it."

    The Frank nodded.
He suddenly walked towards the ships.

"Let us be quick. Audentes Fortuna Iuvat."

Orsini gestured to his captain, a Pisan named Girolamo, and his small troop of men began to board the ships. The pilgrims who had chsoen to lend their arms to Jacopo's cause were a ragtag bunch but followed an Italian named Pietro of Vicenza. He got the pilgrim's into some semblance of order and had them board behind the Papal spearmen. Orsini walked up behind Philip. "This could make the two of us very rich and powerful men my son." He grinned. "Or very dead. I pray you know what you are doing."

Cristoforo told his sergeant of the crossbowmen, a hardened Venetian noble Condottieri called Xavier, to get all the crossbowmen on the ship and make them check their aim. Accuracy would be vital in this attack.
His men at arms were already forming up as well. They had their own ships, and had already trained for this. They would need to get in and out of the ships quickly for this assault, because they would need to get to the walls before any sentries could see them.

He then turned to Alexandros. "Are you going to use the sewers?" He asked.

Alexandros was frowning for his idea being pushed aside for a more direct and ....well more suicidal approach. Men will die, but he would not die with them a fools death. "I volunteer to go into the sewers and reach the innards of the city. Give me men to use and I will open the city to the full force of our army."

And there it was, the opportunity, to quite literally open the way for the armies of god to claim the city proper, to save the countless lives that would have been needed to take the city prior. Or fail miserably getting lost in the sewers or getting surrounded and killed.

"Take 20 crossbowmen and 15 men at arms with you," Cristoforo answered. "You should be fine as long as you don't get spotted, but you won't stand long in a fight."

Alexandros nodded to Cristoforo, "It will be enough, you can be surprised how much a gang of men can do in a big city" Just ask my friends back in Venice "Once in the city I will head to the nearest target of importance, whether that be a gate or possibly a person."

You could make the succsess of the venture into the sewers a roll thing. How high determining how close I get to a place of importance or in the case of a very low roll, how lost or get turned around back into the sea.

Ooc: I'll wait until we are across the water, you will have to get into the sewers on that side and we might get spotted along the way, I believe.

The ships began to slip across the water, quietly, with not a sound.
The waves of the Golden Horn were strangely mundane, and the moon was but a clouded crescent.

There were ladders on the ships.
Cristoforo's crossbows were ordered to climb the walls first, taking the ladders up the rocky shores.
    Philip's men would follow.
Father Orsini's retinue were to follow after.

They would wait first, however, to see if the Venetian knight could open the gates for them.

The ships were floating silently, moored at the rocky shores below the walls.
A couple thousand men sat in them, watching the walls above them, their eyes glancing over every crenelation.
There were some lights farther down the walls in different places, but only minor torches at best. The Romans clearly did not have a strong presence here.

Philip d'Alencon stood beside the base of a tower, below and under the view of any potential guardsmen, with a good chunk of knights and men-at-arms.
The Venetians were all in the boats, waiting with the ladders and the rest of the assault battaile.
The Parisian Frank watched the gates that stood not 40 paces from them, on an elevated walkway that went down to Prosphorion Harbor.

Cristoforo, still in the ships, told one of his sergeants they would soon have to climb. The sergeant nodded and scurried off to below deck, to tell the men. A few minutes later, about fifty men at arms came above deck, grappling hooks in their hands and swords loosely in their belts. Most of them awaited the order to exit the ships and start climbing eagerly, but a few of the Venetians looked a bit nervous, or scared even. It would be their first real battle, although they had been drilled for this over and over again.

It was too long. The Venetian, like Philip suspected, couldn't get through to the gate.
And so he whispered to his flag bearer, who then wove his banner back and forth.

The ladders surged forward from the bellies of the sea-beasts, and the storming of the Imperial District would begin.

Soranzo's crossbowmen went forward first, to take out any sentries and to shoot from the walls.
Then came all the milites, sergants, and homme d'armes, climbing the ladders onto the walls and into the city.
This side of the district was mostly open green, with trees and a few buildings here and there.
The Acropolis rose to their left, illuminated by the pale moonlight.

There was no order really, as the crusader-men rushed together in large groups, howling and barking with torches.
Philip followed closely behind, rushing to lead them, his bodyguard following.
It was rush to take control, to cut off the head of the beast.

They could see Greeks organized in the distance, amassed in the darkened complexes of the palace, and ran straight towards them, aiming to cut right through them.
No mercy, no quarter. No chivalry.

The crusaders could not culled or held back from their prey, their prize.
The riches of Constantinus and Justinianus would be theirs.

The dawn of the next day would come to find the city a bloody massacre.

36 men including him, thats all he was given, that was all he needed. He needed to be quick, and the fewer the quicker, less the attack become a blood bath at the walls. He would be the savior, he would deliver the jewel in the east. He was close, so close now. They had been walking through the muck and sludge for some time now, they hit the sewers as soon as they reached the walls of Constantinople via the fleet. He was quite put off that his tabard was a ....little dirty now. His golden city at the bottom of the sea now covered in the excrement of the golden city. He took his mind away from the pettiness of the thought, soon there would be banners lining the streets with his standard on them. The men were starting to look angry, walking through this for ten mins was beginning to put them off, their thoughts turning to how if they had stayed behind they could be on the walls and looting the city by now. Time has a way of slowing itself when you are standing in and not running to get out of it.

Then ahead they noticed a light not to far off. Finally ,was the one word that passed through everyone's head. Alexandros turned to the men and spoke in low tones, "Draw your weapons brothers, as soon as we emerge from the well from the looks of it, we make way for the nearest gate. We must open at least one! Spare our Venetian brothers death so that we may carve out a new life for ourselves!" They all gave their nods of agreement. They started climbing the side of the well, it was slow going though, the armor starting to weigh them down. He hoped that the commotion of the battle and darkness of night would shield them from the eyes of the army behind the walls. Alexandros was first out, his sword drawn and scanning his surroundings. He looked for landmarks to guide him, and finding one. A tower, the Tower of Eirene if he recalled correctly. They were not that far from the walls of the Galata side. AS soon as they all exited the sewers he updated them on their location. Some looked relieved to be out into the city, others looks concerned that they were in the heart of the enemies camp, and outnumbered. The latter would be the smarter of course, but now was not the time to talk about the insanity of going into the city with only 35 men.

They headed towards the gates as fast as they could, only crossing streets or alleys after scanning them for activity, using the shouts and screams coming from the battlefields to mask the sounds of their journey. War had a good way of masking an infiltration. People always overlook details in the chaos, but Alexandros always had known that the devil was in the details. Soon the walls were raising above their heads and their pace had picked up. The anxiety was building, soon so soon would blood be spilt. As the guards looked outwards, the real threat came from within as Alexandros's infiltrators closed in on their objective.

That is when things took a turn for the worse. Quite worse acutally. Upon reaching the walls, the were a diustinct lack of battle sound, possibly from the others outside the city waiting on their success or failure. A bunch of crusaders that smell like all sorts of wrong walking through a city did leave a trail to follow. The walls were so close, but now were unobtainable. The bees had been roused from their hive and now it was a struggle to survive. The whole city was about to descend upon them. Time for a change of plans.Change of plans. "Boys it looks like our initial objective has failed....Time for a change of plans. We take whatever we want, and we make our way towards the palace." the promise of loot would appease them for now but Alexandros was more concerned about salvaging this failure. He would not have shifted through the gutters of his enemies for nothing. He would be the first to reach the head of the snake. Even if he was the last bloodied foul smelling man of his team, he would get there. Whatever leader was heading up this defense or whatever noble. He would take them by the throat and make them submit to the will of god.....

Cristoforo himself was one of the first men on the walls. He had tried to keep his men silent, but to no avail; even before they were on top of the walls they were already yelling the Greeks were cowards, even though it was obvious the enemy would not understand a word of what was being shouted about them or their mothers.

As he stood atop the imposing wall, with a torch of which the origins were unknown suddenly in his hands, he peered in the distance. Lights were coming their way. Lots of lights. "Crossbows, attention!" He shouted, but the cry for order got lost in the chaos. "Fire, fire at the dogs when they get in range!" He then shouted. Strangely enough, the men were eager enough to repeat that order.

Men had already gotten off the walls, and were charging towards the Greeks, who were still out of range for the crossbowmen. "Venetians!" He shouted, his force had largely stayed together. "Down we go, and don't forget to rape the women!" He then made his way to the gatehouse, trying to push Franks and Romans alike out of the way. He would not miss out on the spoils of Constantinople.
