As Ramadan begins, more than 100 hunger-strikers in Guantánamo Bay continue their protest. More than 40 of them are being force-fed. A leaked document sets out the military instructions, or standard operating procedure, for force-feeding detainees. In this four-minute film made by Human Rights organisation Reprieve and Bafta award-winning director Asif Kapadia, US actor and rapper Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), experiences the procedure.

Except for the whole 'feeding tube forcibly inserted into body' part. It's pretty barbaric, not to mention the religious disposition if the people on the receiving end of this.

I don't know a great deal on the prison system in the US, so forgive me if I am stating the obvious, but why can't they let the individual who wants to fast do so? They could leave solid foods in their cells and if they choose not eat so be it.

It's unlikely they would let themselves die - would they?

Well they consider a lot of these inmates to be enemy combatants and Under federal law, civilian courts do not have jurisdiction to hear cases concerning the detention, treatments or conditions of confinement of any enemy combatant. This is pretty much BS as there are either civilians or POWs, "Enemy combatant" was deliberately fabricated as a designation for US detainees to circumvent the parameters of the Geneva Conventions.

I don't think this is justification for such a practice, they don't want to eat - 'em. Let them starve, what motivation does the prison have to give the inmates sustenance?

The video is stupid though and Mos Def is either acting or a giant pussy. I had to get a catheter(a tube like that one) shoved up my Urethra for a surgical procedure and i didn't cringe that much. Seriously, dude is a big time pussy if that is real, which i doubt it is. He probably did it once and was like, "Besides a slight discomfort this isn't that bad. Lets do a reshoot and throw some of my famous acting on it this time." What a joke!

I think it was the fact he was trying to resist.

But yeah it could be attributed to needless martyrdom, especially since his Islamic beliefs have become so prominent.

I wish he could just make music again - he was one of the few good Hip Hop artists left.

I've had my stomach pumped before, getting that tube through your nose and down into your stomach is just a horrible feeling. Unlucky for me I had a practicing/trainee nurse do it for me, she finally managed to get it down my stomach, after the 3rd attempt, which if you believe you've messed up you have to completely take out the tube and start again. Safe to say she wasn't my favourite nurse over that 2week period at the hospital.

Atleast now I can pretty much stick my finger all the way up my nose and it doesn't bother me, which is cool I guess.
