Default Towers and gate keep firing at me after I've conquered them?

I am about to conquer Venice with my mighty Genovese army but I've noticed that the city defenses seem to remain active even after I have conquered the building.

Is this working as intended and is there any way for me to prevent my knights being boiled when entering the city?

I've noticed this as well. Only way to get the towers to stop firing at you and gates from dumping oil is to completely drive the defending force away from the walls.

Every single wall section of the city?

I've also noticed that getting to the city centre tend to make the computer withdraw all his forces. Blitzing with infantry past the walls and into the city centre should therefore be a pretty powerful strategy. Especially if I can then crush the enemy between my reinforcing cavalry and the blitz force in the city centre.

You don't need to drive them from every section but only those that are closest to you. In the med 2 engine the towers should only fire if there are actual enemy units nearby. As long as you can drive the enemy away from the wall you should be fine. Check the towers for little flags. If they are there than they will still kill your men. If they are not then they shouldn't do anything.

u need the gatehouse (aka the walls above) not the gateway taken. Put some men up on the wall and you'll have control of the oil.

    ...What Losthief said.

Imagine if there was just one enemy guy on that wall... he could conceivably pull the trigger to drop the oil, even if your guys are bearing down on him. If he's going down, he's taking all your men with him in a molten mass of melted lead!!!

Hint: If you already have taken out the enemy men gaurding the entrance at the gates, send your good men upstairs to fight off any remaining resistance and stick your peasants in the doorway if you need to so none of your expensive guys dies needlessly

I forgot to mention that it may also be due to some weird bug where a unit has left the walls but one man somehow got stuck and is still activating the triggers.

    That could explain it. Thanks

I shoot the gatehouse and towers till they're 100 % damaged. It usually do the trick.

Bringing catapults and ballistas with you slows you down quite a bit, its better to take some extra causalities.

    Isn't that a bit cynical?

Anyway, this is where the peasants thrive. If you use them to trigger the gatehouse's load premature and than rush your knights through, you'll be better of, Adar.

I usually attack from 2 or 3 sides at the same time. The AI usually leave one of the gates without protection. You can than go on and flank them with cavalry inside the settlement from this breach whenever they defend the main-gate or a street.
If you bring with you a siege-train it will slow you down. True. However, if you attack a neighboring city you have to spend one turn building siege towers and battering rams anyway, usually enough time for your siege-train to arrive during the next turn when you make the attack.

A different trick will be to shoot the walls underneath the feet of the defenders. Either by locking them into action with one of your units and shoot them down or concentrating all of your artillery at one spot on the wall at the same time to prevent them from moving to a different wall-section before it's over. If you choose to lock them into action you might kill a couple of your own men if you don't pay attention to what you're doing.

If you have 2 or some ribaudequins and 4 cannons, knocking two hols, one on each side of one of the corners of the city, and then proceed by mowing them down with the use of the ribauldequins from both sides in an enfilade-move -- will slaughter the majority of them in seconds. If you supply them with some crossbowmen and a couple of cannons firing grapeshots, you usually thin them out enough for you to send in the heavy infantry.

3-4 holes in the wall will make them retreat to the city/castle center. When you have killed the majority of their men, you might trigger this by shooting a few more holes in the wall.
