Since the end of May 2007 the reconstruction of a Roman mosaic can be admired in a glass pavilion in the park of the city Bad Vilbel (beside Frankfurt/ Germany). The showpiece of ancient mosaic art is the only one that was found in the Hessian floor. It is one of the most beautiful in Germany. Shown are sea creatures, grotesque hybrid creatures, and real animals crowd around the sea god Oceanus.
The original part, was found in 1849 at the Southern Railway Station in the remains of a spa. This bath complex was probably part of an estate (Villa rustica). It is situated in the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt (Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt). On the initiative of several groups the mosaic was completely reconstructed in a Sicilian workshop. The Römerkastell Saalburg and the University of Cologne took over the scientific monitoring.
The Mosaic is dated to the 2nd or early 3rd century.
