Thread: Syracuse as a Playable Faction

  1. #1

Icon1 Syracuse as a Playable Faction

The 2 Ancient Country's that I would like to see playable are The Seleucid Empire(I'll talk about why the post is not about them later) and Syracuse. I have Historical and Non-Historical Reasons for why I think that Syracuse should be the 10th playable faction.

    First the Historical:
    1.
They where a major power in the central Mediterranean they held Eastern Sicily against Carthage for decades before Rome had it's wars with Carthage.

    2.
They where also an ally of Rome until the second war with Carthage when they betrayed Rome and the city was captured.

    3.
It was one of the few powerful Greek city-states that had control over its own affairs the city-states in Modern Southern Greece where split into the Leagues Aetolian and Achaean. These where just south of Macedon who had a somewhat large amount of control over them and would be not too much fun to play taking orders from Macedonia. Also I think that the reason the Seleucid Empire is not yet a playable faction is that it Extended from the coast of the Mediterranean to Modern India and would control far more territories that any other faction so far, so they would be to large to be playable based on the province size(they would control probably 20-40 at the start of the game). At least that's what I think the people at total war are thinking.

    Now the Non-Historical:

    1.
I think that it would be fun to play a Greek city-state(I've talked about why this one in the historical reasons) also my other Favorite Faction from RTW 1 the Seleucid empire probably won't have a chance to be included. But I hope that might change.

    2.
It would be interesting to play a Faction that only started with one city in the middle of some of the more powerful factions of the game.

That's my reasons tell me what you think, but please don't just post yes or no or say that I should talk about some other faction etc... But please do tell me what ones you would like if you don't agree and if you would like tell me the reason that you agree or disagree with me talking Syracuse being a playable faction.

Syracuse would be a nice choice.

An interesting situation sandwiched between the Romans and Carthage so there would be much opportunity for naval and land activity.

I think all the Greek City states will be playable as future DLC...but with an interesting twist.

We know that Rome will be divided in families but at the same time will be one single faction. But the Greek City States will be different.

On the faction selection screen menu, you will see just one shield. It simply says Greek City States. After starting the campaign and watching the intro movie you get a "Which city state to play as..."

And you choose which City State, similar as if you were to choose a Roman family. But in this case whoever City State you choose will only have their respective territory.

    The choices will be this...

    1. Syracuse
    2. Pergamum
    3. Athens
    4. Sparta
    5. Cyrenaica
    6. Rhodes

All three have similar if not identical basic rosters. But what makes them different is their unique units *Spartan Hoplites, Rhodian Slingers, Athenian Archers, Eastern Hoplites, etc.* as well as unique mercenary units. Plus different policies and bonuses*Sparta is more military and doesn't rely on diplomacy, Athens is more diplomatic, etc.

This is how i want the Greek City States to be in Rome II

I would rather have a mainland Greek faction first just to be mainstream.

I rather have the void be filled in Iberia/Dacia.

    @arcani

That's a really interesting proposal since it opens up so many different options for the players. I actually wouldn't mind buying a dlc if it was shaped like this.

Just hope its not a faction that is doomed from the start like the Oda in Shogun 2. I remember Syracuse was actually quite hard to defend in RTW as both the Scipii and Carthage wanted it for themselves.

Any added playable faction is always welcome, I guess... Syracuse at least offers a very challenging start.

If the DLC added a bit of new content like dilemmas or more custom cities along with a Greek Cities style setup as mentioned above I would probably buy my first DLC. That is the best DLC proposal I've seen since adding new areas of map to extend playability.

Syracuse may be a fun state to play but I'd prefer others first such as Iberia, Dacia, Thrace, a mainland Greek state etc. because Syracuse really won't even be a moderate contender in the game as it is sandwiched between Rome and Carthage. CA would have to allow Syracuse to start off with advanced defences and more soldiers and income to compete with their neighbouring juggernauts.

If they make a Peloponnesian War expansion then Syracuse will be one of the strongest 5 states and probably a lot more fun to play.

I think they're rather fill up the empty Iberian peninsula, and then go for the Greeks. Give them more time to flesh them out.

Absolutely, YES. They are very interesting geo-politically, being able to support either Carthage or Rome. They also had a very unique position as the first inventors of siege artillery (independent of Asia).

They had a very unique city design and geography, with the administrative district of Ortygia on a highly defensible island/peninsula, for the elite and wealthy. Then farther north-east, the Achradina district for artisans, craftsmen, gen-pop, and even further north-west the very large Epipolai district for suburbs.. and for the extent of the defensive wall.

Then at the north-west of Epipolai you had the massive point-defense fortress of Euryalus, filled with siege artillery.

Only way to conquer Syracuse is by a combined marine and land invasion. This city was able to withstand all attempts up until Rome came with a highly complex combined forces operation by Marcellus. I imagine you will need a fairly advanced "tech tree" in order to get to that point.

I would choose Syracuse above all other factions being bandied about right now. Sicily was always my favorite culture in M2TW. I know Syracuse isn't exactly the Sicily we know and love, so no need to barbecue me for that comment anyone and everyone, but it is close enough to make me want them more than all the rest.

Which would make his claim of knowing nothing suspect, which would catapault him back into the ranks of possibly knowing something, unless his knowledge was faulty, continuing this never-ending cycle of inanity.
