Thread: Your Favorite Infantry in Medieval II Total War

Default Your Favorite Infantry in Medieval II Total War

    For me:

The Janissaries (Heavies, Archers, Musketeers) - the best infantry combination in this game. The Janissary Heavy Infantry is one of the strongest close quarters combatant, Their Archers are the best archer unit, why? (11 morale + stakes + good melee). While their Musketeers is simply the best gunpowder unit (possibly the strongest infantry of all when talking about infantry vs infantry), and they can hold their own on melee as well against armored foes.

Hashashim - due to it's awesomeness and Assassin's Creed.

    What about you guys?

Well it could be none other than the Venetian Heavy Infantry. There armour piercing mace like war hammers tear through anything. They are beats. A great overall unit and once you apply some armour upgrades they look nothing short of epic.

In second would probably be Dismounted Gothic Knights. They just look epic. I don't know if they are available in campaign but still they just epic in custom battles

A close third would be the Dismounted Ritterbruder from the Teutonic Campaign. They are beasts especially as no other faction really has an answer to them. They are a great unit and there horns just make them even more awesome. Who doesn't want to control a unit(or even a whole army) of the infamous Teutonic Knights? Janisarries are pretty cool though. They are definitely one of the best units in the game.

Dismounted Ritterbrüder, vanilla I think would be simple Dismounted Feudal Knights or Armoured Swordsmen, or perhaps Armoured Sergeants.

I like pavise Genoese crossbow militia. Available early, low maintenance, moderate price, powerful (albeit not exactly rapid-shooting) at range, not-instantly-dead in mêlée (unless due to a formed cavalry charge). They're a workhorse unit. Except maybe workhorse is a term better applied to cavalry?

My favorite is the Norse Swordsmen. Not the best but they are BEASTS.

Probably the "Unhorsed Knights" - that is the Crusader Foot Knights - mercenaries.. essentially a DFK variant, but there's a few things that make them so awesome.

1 - You can get them at a time when you won't have DFKS
2 - They have 11 morale, as opposed to 9 of DFK
3 - they have 16 attack! compared with 13 of DFK
4 - 1 point more in Defense skill, otherwise same as DFK
5 - AS a crusader Merc (sometimes general Merc in the Levant) they will come with Experience most likely (making their Stats even Higher), and with a successful crusade they'll get even more Experience - silver and gold chevrons for sure.

This unit is still impressive in the late game against all sorts of enemy, but there's nothing quite so special as using this rare unit against the low-tier troops of the early period it's fantastic!

I have to say Italian spear militia.Cheap, strong and witth proper support can take on more powerful units.Second place, for me,is split between Genoese x-bows,yewman archers and dvor.Third is also split between norse swords and almughavars(?).I would love to have all those units in one army

All Norse units. They are amazing.

Also Arab infantry, Italian Spear Militia, Highland Nobles, Dismounted English/Portuguese Knights and Tabardiyaa.

My absolute favourite though would be Silvan elf Sentinels from TATW. Maybe cheating but they just don't compare to any unit I have ever used in any Total War game.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I am me. You are not me. You are you. If I was you, I wouldn't be me.
If you were me, I'd be sad.But I wouldn't then be me because you'd be me so you wouldn't be me because I wasn't me because you were me but you couldn't be because I'd be a different me. I'd rather be any kind of bird (apart from a goose) than be you because to be you I'd have to not be me which I couldn't do unless someone else was me but then they would be you aswell so there would still be no me. They would be you because I was you so to restore balance you would have to be me and them meaning all three of us would become one continously the same. That would be very bad.

I'm still new to Medieval II, so I haven't really gotten around to try a whole lot of units. I really enjoyed the dismounted feudal knights and the Norse swordsmen.

I'm probably missing a lot of awesome units. :p

Try the germanic units, such as the Holy Roman Empire's Dismounted Imperial Knights, with maces and plate armour. Terrifying.

Norse Swordsmen form part of a family of similar units, which I'd call "medium-grade sword-and-shield fighters": Byzantine infantry, dismounted Byzantine lancers, Norse swordsmen, swordsmen militia, and urban militia. Arguably, dismounted broken lances and dismounted men-at-arms belong in the same family.

The Iberian militias, swordsmen militia and urban militia, give the advantages of urban recruitment and low maintenance.

Norse swordsmen give the advantage of extremely early recruitment, available from basic castles (dismounted huscarls don't hurt the early Danish infantry roster either, of course). They also get a little more upgradable armor than Iberian militias.

Byzantine infantry are like Iberian militias, except they don't get free upkeep in cities. This is because the Byzantines are CA's purple-headed stepchild.

Dismounted Byzantine lancers have very upgradable armor (even more than Norse swordsmen), but come from fortresses with barracks. They come later than when most factions get DFKs (which Byzantines effectively get, in the form of dismounted latinkon, from citadel armouries). Once again, purple-headed stepchild.

Dismounted men-at-arms and broken lances have very fancy armor, have high maintenance costs, and come late in the game, but in skill and morale are similar to other medium-grade swordsmen. Although they are also hardy. Overall, I'd say they're a ripoff, unless you're Milan going with the all-cities approach, in which case dismounted broken lances are your only heavy infantry.

    They are TANKS!

I also love Dismounted French Noble Knights (I believe there's an English equivalent?) because I just LOVE warhammers!

Venetian heavy infantry, French dismounted noble knights, Scots guard, Norse archers, dismounted dvor are my top favourites, they all look cool and are pretty badass units. The Catalan mercs are probably killers too but I haven't had the opportunity to properly use them.

The Elves in TATW are my all-time favourites though, Silvan archers are the best of the best.

I'm definitely going to give the Holy Roman Empire another go later. I have been them once in the past, but I was far from as knowledgeable about the game as I am now.

I wish there was a "Kalmar Union" type feature for the British Isles -- that way england could have Scotch Pikes and superb light infantry/Cav

They use pole axes, not war hammers.

By all means try dismounted imperial knights, Elgin, but be prepared for mild disappointment. If dismounted imperial knights face a Spanish swordsmen militia, the dismounted imperial knights will usually win, but certainly not consistently. They stand little chance against dismounted feudal knights.

English and Portuguese both have equivalents to dismounted noble knights: dismounted English knights and dismounted Portuguese knights. Although the Portuguese version is adapted to a southern European climate (better on sand, worse on snow, marginally worse in forests, less heat fatigue).

I personally really like the Sword and Buckler Men. Mainly because they look sexy as **** with or without armour upgrades, but they generally seem to perform just as well as heavier infantry, but for a cheaper cost. They are also quicker. My other favourites are the Venetian Heavy Infantry and the French Noble Knights.

Although, my overall favourites will always be the Almughavars from SS.
