Thread: Resource Tooltips Problem with different OS

  1. #1

Default Resource Tooltips Problem with different OS

Our mod team converted the RTW pig resource into horse resource a few releases ago and works great in Windows XP.

I received a bug report saying the tooltips is still saying the resource is a pig not horse, which implies somehow the game engine is pointing at vanilla tooltip file not the new tooltips we created. I then was able to duplicate the problem running a Windows 7 OS, but not able to do so on a Windows XP.

    What could have gone wrong?

It sounds like a UAC problem if you have not disabled UAC this windows 7 feature will cause many modding issues and problems like the one you just described.

In this case, I am afraid it is a little more complicated than a simple VirtualStore problem.

    Anyone else has similar experience?

If it works on XP but not Win7 its a Virtual Store problem. Likely your patch modifies the non-virtual store version, but a previous virtual store version of the file already existed, which is overwriting the changes made to the non-virtual store version.

Easy way to verify, on a system with virtual store enabled install the old version (pre change) make a change to the file so it creates a version in the virtual store, run the upgrade, which should modify the non-virtual version, and then play the game to see what happens. You can also test the other way, run the old install then upgrade without changing anything, which should produce the desired results.

The reason I had the previous post is because I worked on VirtualStore problem before, and this is nothing like it. Given the fact that VirtualStore is a very versatile feature, so I would like to see it as a VS problem but so far no luck.

Because I can not find the RTW nor our mod files in any of these paths...
    C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files

{user name} are all the users including "public"

I also change our security on these folder so they don't need to be virtual stored before this thread was started.

The description of how it was working on XP but not on Windows 7 threw me off at first but if you would post the file I have an idea of what to look for in it now.

edit: I could be wrong I'd have to see the file to know for sure.

Are you installing on Win7 with admin privileges?

    Hi, Squid,

Yes she does, and I was a witness through remote logins on her test station to verify that the VirtualStore has zero RTW/modding files in the VirtualStore folders.

The reason I am posting here instead of her is because she is thinking it might be a Steam issue and she is in the middle of verifying that possibility.

So this problem may not be XP vs Win7 but Steam vs. DVD when installing on different location other than program files folder.

    Thanks, Lizzie,

    Squid,

I am still running DVD install right now, will post when I am able to replicate the problem.
