    Default Big question

    Hello everybody,

    I am new to the modding community here, and so I hope I'm doing this right with this post. I have been working on a mod for my own personal playing for a few months now. I have added in a very few units (4-5) from other mods and I have recently merged in the new divide and conquer map which is brilliant of course. I was thinking about posting it here once it is complete just in case anyone wanted to give it a try and enjoy it. I have not edited any textures or models, only stats and text. It is mainly a balancing and game pace mod. Do I need to just give credits or do I need to get permission from the respective modders first?

    10. Using Modders' Work Without Permission (1, 3, or 6 points)

    Using or distributing part or all of any modification without permission is prohibited.
    This mean you have to get an OK from the creator of the material you want to share first - unless the creator(s) have presented that the material is open source/free content. And also then it's almost always required, or at least good conduct, to present what you use from another and who the original creator(s) is/are.



    What concern files and content from TATW specificly;
    I'm afraid to tell it's a rough time to be a modder of TATW, due to King Kong not being active and granting permissions. To not cripple the stage all together the moderators lean towards the praxis and statements of KK, that left some doors open, summed up like this;

    First, if you've never explored your TATW folder here is a sample folder tree you can follow: C:\Program Files (x86)\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\Third_Age_3\data.

    In your 'data' folder there is a file called "export_descr_units.txt". Open export_descr_units.txt with notepad ++ (link to Notepad++ HERE)

    Scroll down until you come to a faction (first one is gondor) and you will see something like this:

    This is the info for the 'Gondor Militia' unit. The trait you are looking for is bolded and in red. If you want every unit (such as trolls and mumlakil) to have free upkeep, you need to add "free_upkeep_unit" to the attributes line of each of those units. They can be found under their appropriate factions.

    Edit: Also, if your interested in learning what the rest of the unit info means, Mythic_Commodore has a wonderful introductory guide that can be found (Here).

    Sort of yes, as if you do not edit material you do not have to upload that (nor, if it aint textfiles, may you currently). For exampel if you edit the EDU so that elven archers do more damage the unit is already in TATW and you only have to release your new EDU with the submod.

    @ Mank & Loki_999: You were both right - I'd left some typos in there by accident and yes, Mank, I'm using Firefreak's DaC map and it's brilliant. The export_descr_buildings also did not like me messing with the rare/AOR units.

    @Ngugi: thanks for the tip - just downloaded it and @ DrBeast I downloaded WinMerge and yes, it proved invaluable for finding mistakes/errors.

    Thanks for your comments everyone, I really appreciate the advice, especially as you must get questions from novices all the time.

    Any idea how difficult it would be to make AUM compatible with Firefreak's DaC map?

    Don't know how your mod* has it, but the lore name is Mablung, not Malbung; and then I do not understand what he does in the list as he's passed mature age of 16 (unless the mdo has another mature age but then the age differences might have to be looked over again)
    Can't see here but you have made Elrond older than Círdan (and Celeborn older as well)?

    *(assume you play 2nd Age since Celeborn and Galadriel is in HE)
