I'm a completionist, so no one died as I'd done every single personal quest.

I think the only avoidable death I had in the trilogy was Lawson in ME3, but since her character was so disappointing and obvious pandering (then again it's Bioware so all the women were little more than sexed up real-dolls in a dating sim) I didn't really care
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...

    Doesn't that suck a bit?

I mean for me it was such a shock (if you can be shocked by games) when I saw all my crew getting killed. Made it that more exciting.

I will say that my more enjoyable playthrough of ME3 was where I had gotten all but two people killed in ME2 haha.

    @ Jin:

I think that you're right in the sense that it's even harder to write a strong character if he also has to be malleable and susceptible to player input. But I might've liked a bit more risk taking from Bioware. I remember fondly in Kotor what happened when you sided with dark side Bastila. Canderous, HK47 and Zaalbar stuck around. Juhani did if you kept her dark. Carth and Mission wanted to leave, but were killed in the process. Haha. I liked Carth for taking that stand though. It showed spine and character. The reason I liked James Vega is because he took similar stands like that.

So yes, Garrus has a few moral conundrums and ponders things, but at the same time he's always your dashboard bobblehead. I would've liked him to just say no to Shepard for a change.

    Anyway enough derailing.

My first play through I didn't use guides so Mordin and Grunt were toast in the end. I was just glad tali made it.

Well, would have been nice if ME2 and ME3 had picked up on Virmire and improved on it.

I'm sitting on the fence concerning the characters. It's rather hit and miss. One major problem is that ME2 cut Ash and Kaidan so you only get that one hate scene and that's it. Liara is completely rebooted personality wise. I thought she was more interesting as the slightly insecure science gal, instead of action girl #5. She gets lots of content though (in contrast to Ash/Kaidan) so the rebooted character gets enough screentime to grow on you. Tali is imo interesting because she is one of the few characters who actually always have something of their own to do, be it her pilgrimage, doing missions for the Quarian fleet and so on so I got more of a sense of her being her own person. I really liked Jack's development even if obvious it kind of fits. She is so broken in ME2 that one actually only hopes she finds something to turn around and she does so while retaining her character. Ashley got also completely rebooted in ME3 which is too late to make her interesting, particular as this anorexic skeleton with boob and nose job

In a way those characters that you don't easily get on mission because they have something else to do seem the more interesting (not something like Liara in ME2 where without the DLC you get stuck in a dialogue loop that she has other stuff to do than saving the Galaxy and you never see it). I think that improved Miranda in ME3 a lot because she essentially says she has her own thing to do and you just get to meet her here and there.

@Dude: Yeah, greater moral choice consequences in the characters up to someone pulling a gun on you would be great. Mordin and the genophage had so much impact because you felt that your priorities and his got on collision course. I simply couldn't shoot him in the back knowing he did something with the conviction of dieing for it even though I found his reasoning bad.
"Sebaceans once had a god called Djancaz-Bru. Six worlds prayed to her. They built her temples, conquered planets. And yet one day she rose up and destroyed all six worlds. And when the last warrior was dying, he said, 'We gave you everything, why did you destroy us?' And she looked down upon him and she whispered, 'Because I can.' "

I want to add that playing renegade in ME3 feels like a totally different game than playing all paragon. The decisions that you have to make are tough and brutal, and you're heavily involved in all of them. The scene with Mordin... then Wrex, that was the toughest thing this game ever put me through. I don't find it that often in games where you're faced with consequences in such a direct way. Especially the caught-your-pants-down kind you have with Wrex. Everything felt so real at first, saving a galaxy isn't all a prince charming story where everyone gets a happy end. You have to make tough calls with tough consequences. But then, you remember that as Paragon you can save everyone in a laugh, and you're left thinking "Renegade Shepard, you fool! The krogan will have their own Shakespeare, everything will be fine!".

I usually play a mix of renegade and paragon in the same game.

It often leads to hilarious results - There was one time on the Citadel a reporter came up to me and I was chatting to her all friendly when all of a sudden the renegade button comes up, I press it and Shepard lands a haymaker right on her cheekbone. Brilliant stuff.

Jack and Zaeed died because they weren't loyal although I wasn't particulary fond of either character so it didn't really bother me. Garrus though was my second favourite character behind Thane, playing Mass Effect 3 I kept thinking, if only Garrus was here :/

    Thane - Gutted

    Tali - Vaporized

Mordin - Took a blast to the head.

Garrus - Taken by space bees.

    Normandy Crew - liquified.

No one died on my first playthrough. I think Jack has died in one of them, but that's it. I always complete the loyalty missions, so everyone lives.

Jacob - missile to the face

Miranda, Mordin - died holding the line because I took both Garrus and Grunt with me to set the bomb.

Tali - died escorting the people back to the ship.

On my first playthrough it was Garrus that I can recollect, the others are of less significance.

    Going off memory,

    Thane, Jack, and Tali.

I went with Miranda and Garrus, both loyal, in my party.

Jack died but only because I couldn't make her stand down against Miranda. But no big deal since I did nt particularly like her.

Yeah I remember that one. I think the 'kill each other later' line is the one that will keep both of them alive and their loyalties in order.

Whataver you chose the red or blue dialogue, its the one that will maintain both of their loyalties. You need to be renegade enough or paragon enough, or both if thats the case, same thing with the other conflicts, like tali and legion.

Oh yeah that's right too, forgot about that piece of the puzzle. It's been so long since I played though this, I think I may have to throw this in again.
