While this may need its own forum section in time, here is the annoucement from GDC:

"During his session at GDC 2013 in San Francisco today, Lead Designer James Russell revealed a brand new title under development at the UK studio.

Total War: ARENA will be CA’s first title in a F2P model, representing over a decade of strategy gaming expertise and a new spin-off for the Total War series. Offering players the chance to pitch history’s greatest commanders and their armies against each other in massive team-based battles, ARENA will focus entirely on online multiplayer, mixing elements of RTS and MOBA gameplay.

CA is looking for gamers to help craft their vision of a detailed, deep, multiplayer tactical experience. For more details on forthcoming Closed Beta Tests, sign-up at www.totalwar.com/arena."

I think all the crap in recent gaming comes from multiplayer models. And it's not healthy for turn-based strategies for sure. I now fear for the future of TW gaming as a whole.

How this could be called a Total War? 3 units? This is a disgrace to the name, nothing else.

STREAMLINED is the right word from the presentation.

I'll just re-iterate from other thread:

Cewl, I see this more as a sort of mini-game in addition to R2TW and others. Glad it's not Warhammer just yet - don't get me wrong, I'd like a warhammer TW game but not just right now. The timing just wasn't correct, would be way too soon to announce such a big gaming title/project when they're still on pre-beta R2TW. We don't want too many resources taking out from R2TW, do we since that would either mean a half finished R2 or a half finished warhammer.

Too few details to say this will fall or stand, but I'm interested to see how it plays out. Never played TW's online much- wanted shogun two for the coop campaign but it was too fast paced/rockpaperscissor though i can't wait on R2-coop. But for small scale battles like this arena thing it sounds definitly great to just be able to log in and have a pitched battle and be gone again when you're in a hurry and still want to have some fun.

ps: i feel sorry for Will, I mean lol they all excitedly announce a never-seen-before-announcement and two seconds later this topic is spilled with dissatisfaction - that's what I call a "bummer".
