Thread: Charge bonus question ?

  1. #1

    Default Charge bonus question ?

There is a charge bonus number with arrows and javelins
Is it used by arrows and javelins ?

I also noticed that when you look ingame at a unit stat with a primary weapon (like arrows or javelins)
the charge bonus number is always the one of the primary weapon no matter what is the secondary weapon number
    Is it normal ?
Does the game use that number for both weapons or does it use the right number for each weapon ?

    well i m not sure
    but as per my understanding
charge bonus is always linked to mele weapon
ie for archers and javelins it must be refered to secondary weapon
    for phalaxes secondary weapon
    for sword infantry primary weapon

    Thanks for your answer.
But i'm not sure i understand it right

    so for example

    stat_pri 8, 2, pilum, 35, 2, thrown, blade, piercing, spear, 25 ,1

    stat_sec 7, 4, no, 0, 0, melee, simple, piercing, sword, 25 ,0.3

when i look ingame at the unit description the charge bonus value is 2

so whatever number is on stat_pri(because it is a throwing weapon) it is not going to affect the pilum in any way, right ?

so if i want them to have 4, instead of stat_sec i should put 4 on stat_pri ?

Charge bonuses are understood very, very poorly, by both the modding community and by the AI.

    I recommend removing them altogether.

You are right, i'm really lost with that.

I checked many missile units, and some have the right charge bonus from stat_sec on the ingame unit description and some not.

It seems that the units with prec on the stat_pri_attr line have the wrong charge bonus and the ones without it have the right one ???

So do you know if the charge bonus on a missile line gives a bonus to the missile or is it not use at all by the missile ?

I just figured that the charge bonus was a bonus to attack when charging the enemy.

IIRC, I thought I read something in Medieval: Total War that you get the charge bonus when you attack an enemy with a charge. If you kill that enemy, you get to continue your charge...if not, your charge is done and you revert back to normal.

This is why Cavalry can sometimes blast through poor defensive units as they have larger charge bonuses and a greater chance to kill someone and keep their charge. Sort of simulating the steamrolling effect of running over the enemy.

But, it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong

But what i wonder is if the charge bonus on stat_pri for a missile unit have an effect on the missile or not ?
