The Swan Prince has forged a kingdom as he wishes the Ildiri to be seen; their glory is plain for all to see, rather than hidden in mists as the Heron Kingdom is. He is filled with pride; to a fault or hubris. Armoured in a Dwarf-made alloy, they are a wonder to see, but their skills are not as honed as the forces of the heron Kingdom, who practice the art of killing; more so than the Prince's elves, who are filled with honour and glorious battle. They are directly met in battle, where the Heron King's elves tend towards evasion and entrapment - this is a human form or war, and they are perhaps not as practised as they should be at this. Having said that, they are a wonder to behold, and they fight well and honourably. In a war for survival rather than glory, perhaps the Heron King is better prepared.

The Imhrain Imhraun are the epitome of Ildiri nobility. They rode at the side of Princes and Kings from the beginnings of Ildiri military mobilisation, glittering in their mail, their white lances bearing tips of Sea Steel, the wood nigh on unbreakable, tearing through foes like a needle through wool. They ride heavily armoured horses, their mounts able to speak, their relationship forged in grace. The Swan Knights are quite possibly the most deadly and effective cavalry there are. Their belief in themselves and their desire for victory makes them nigh on unassailable.

Their belief in themselves and their desire for victory makes them nigh on unassailable. Dismounted, they fight for the Swan Prince in his Kingdom, equally effective in a role of centre of any battle line.

These elves are winged, Aetheri - elves of the Ildiri who were given domain over the clouds and skies. They alone stayed when the Deep-Sea and Aetheri left for their longing and service. These elves fly swiftly to engage their foes, and are excellent with blades. Many enemy archers have found these warriors upon them before they can loose a single arrow. Swift, deadly, they are a massive asset to the Swan Prince.

The glittering hosts of the Swan Prince boast many impressive units, but the Swan Chariots are one of the greatest assets he has. Heavy chariots, borne by twin 'Aureyne White' war horses, they bear archers whose ley attacks are deadly. With enough momentum, a swift of chariots can crush an enemy unit in seconds, but, when held and pinned in place, they are extremely vulnerable to melee foes.

The Black Swans are a vastly disciplined and effective fighting force. Armed with spears and great shields, they are untiring, unforgiving and resolute beyond death's stare. They are deeply skilled in war and their eyes are said to burn fear into enemies as they face them. Some say the Black Swan is Death, but it is far beyond that in nature. There were black swans once, and they flew beyond the Ildiri lands one day, never to return. The Black Swans, as soldiers, excel. They are unbreakable, impossible to stop, and even the toughest cavalry or war beasts baulk at their serried spear-lines. They are undoubtedly a strong counter-part to the White Court Guard of the Heron King.

The Prince, given his own land, used magic to force the climate to warm; with the help of Dwarves, the climate has altered in nature to a warmer design. Always where the Ildiri have gone, there have been the beautiful Daen Swans, migrating creatures by nature, and he has managed to give them a true, permanent home - the winters are as bright as summer, and the Daen no longer migrate. Always, they have borne aloft Ildiri; children and adults alike. The Swandaen are the knights trained to warfare, as the swans, by nature and size, are surprisingly effective in battle; more so than the Falcons of the Edesti or the Spurhawks of the Empire. They are fewer in number, but they fight for their Prince with every fibre of their being.

    HERON-KINGDOM-ONLY UNITS

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Heron Kingdom is alive with old magic. The soldiers that the Heron King commands are very unlike the glittering hosts of the Swan Prince. Their armour is less radiant, yet their weapons and armour are the purest Seasteel, an art that has never left their borders, as the Swan Prince wishes his soldiers to shine with beauty, and Seasteel, whilst almost weightless, is less striking and possibly not as strong as the Dwarven metals that the Swan Prince's armies wear. The Heron King's forces, however, are every bit as deadly. In many cases, more so.

The archers of the Heron King feather their arrows with gifts of the Falcons and herons that find a home in those lands.

These are the most solid soldiers of the Heron King. They are heavily armoured, have a relentless nature, and their great axes smash shields walls to pieces, carving methodically through enemy ranks. Their faces are heavily shielded, and their axes weightless, yet the impact is of something far beyond their strength. These are shock troops, the Elves that break enemy lines and punish the harshest foes.

The 'White Fires' are the temple warriors of the Ildiri War Cult. They follow Undreth's teachings, which are far less pleasant than any other of the Ildiri traditions are. Their task is vengeance, and they excel at inflicting it. There are not many of these warriors, but they absorb the remnants of defeated or depleted Ildiri units, firing their anger into the 'White Flame', which sends the warriors of the War Cult into a cold, deadly, killing rage.

The first Ildiri to truly understand their nature and their task were drawn to the Avatars of lakes, rivers and even tiny pools or bodies of water. Wherever they travelled, they found the guardians of such things, the breath of the Child, creator of the universe and Reality, in place. Avatars welcomed them in those days, and they taught them well, and slowly began stronger friendships, loves and whispered promises of what was to come. After many years, there were threats to be defeated and dangers that often passed, and the Ildiri and the Avatars formed permanent alliances; more accurately friendships, but not a way humans understand such things. The waters themselves come to fight for the Ildiri, following elder pacts, eager to support their only friends, those they trust to keep their lands clear.

The White Court is the Court of the Heron King. His Palace is built of a mixture of white stone, intertwined with white wood, the two bound together, forming natural arches, with fountains in every courtyard, paved floors, all held by the embrace of living white-barked Lithyn Trees. The White Court Guard are the elite that stand along every hall, walkway and arch. Together, they form units of excellent warriors; skilled, armed and armoured in tensile mail, with surcoats and helms of black, with the tracing of white trees and limbs of their station. Large shields and graceful blades give them a forbidding stance, yet filled with deadly grace.

A strong cavalry unit, the Handellan Lancers have a vast history. Whilst not as heavily armed or armoured as many human lancers, they are incredibly swift, and their ability to chase down enemy soldiers, isolating and routing them is legendary. They do not revel in slaughter, but they have memories of the Ghaurchlai Genocide, and their tradition in that war was both valiant and unforgiving. It is a huge honour to be chosen for the Handellan Lancers.

The Edesti Moonguard were a ceremonial Guard before the Ghaurchlai invaded the Kingdom of Herons. Based around the Starseeker Tower, which lay bound to the rock where the Falcons nest, they were primarily concerned with ritual and lived a separate life from those beyond the tower. Starseers lived there too, weaving the mist that protected the kingdom. When the mists were breached, and the Ghaurchlai invaded the Heron Kingdom, the Moonguard were brought to war. The Starseers were slaughtered mere days before the mists fell, leaving the tower in disarray. Failing in their sole duty left the Moonguard without hope or purpose, but Ithil's body was brought to the tower by the doves and swallows, and they marched from the tower in fury, given purpose again, even if solely vengeful at that point. Their crescent axes glow with a wan light, and they fight with more than natural ability upon the battlefield, their determination absolute. Highly discplined, they have become entirely militant by nature.

    EITHER KINGDOM

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

When Ithil was slain, she died to allow here people and remnants of their army escape to the White fortress that spans the silver waters of the Illidian. Upon her death, the soldiers she had saved formed a military unit; the Tears of Ithil. Bent solely on vengeance and their own deaths in battle, to express their own anger at having left her, they fought like berserkers in the war that followed. Almost wiped out many times, they somehow held the force together, and recruits were plentiful as the war raged on. They fight with two-handed swords and their task is to kill, whatever the cost. They are not filled with hate, but they are fearless and death is seen as a 'proper' end to each warrior's service. They want to die to save their people, as Ithil did, and there is no greater goal or honour than this. They accept men and women both, which is unusual in itself.

The Edesti are an old form of nobility, one that became inextricably linked to the great Falcons that fly the heights of the northern Heron Kingdom, warding against the sea and coasts. Unparalleled in scouting and evasion, they are hard-hitting, riding the majestic falcons to war, birds able to contest the flight of the Spurhawks of the Sea of Grass, fast and lethal. Their claws are fitted with mail piercing sheaths and their reach is immense. Proud and noble, they are a frightening element of the Ildiri army.

NOTE: Technically, both kingdoms should have access to Swan Knights as mounted units, but this is undecided at the moment.

    UNIT SHOWCASE: The Swan Knights

The Swan Knights are the iconic unit of the Ildiri Battle Host, and a slightly deeper look into them is definitely of interest.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    NOTES

The Ildiri are the most notably 'normal' non-human faction in this setting. Their military is based around a fairly simple mechanic; all units are modelled on the 'feeling' of the faction, and this is most notably centred on birds. Many unit follow the Swan, Heron, Falcon, or around concepts like the Moon (serene and ethereal in it's own beauty). The feeling of the faction is one of grace and nobility; both far beyond what humanity can aspire to or imagine. It's not an affectation, or 'put on'; it IS how they are, and they suffer or benefit from this without an ability to change it. To humans, they seem so different, but it simply IS the Ildiri as they are.

The difficulty with doing their military has been to make something good from that, which isn't easy. To attempt to steer clear of as many clichés and pre-defined ideas of elves and such things is a task in itself, but the Swan Knight is not a new concept, in as much as elves, or high elves aren't. However, there's something different here for them. There's a place to make the term Swan Knights have it's own meaning and device. They've been through several incarnations model-wise. They were simpler at one point, then stupidly complicated, then I fiddled with many different helmet ideas, was never satisfied entirely with any of it. Finally, this look was stumbled upon - I kept an old model set, then one of those I had fiddled with and discarded, mixed, matched, fiddled and messed. After two years, I have what I wanted. Plain and simple: these ARE my Ildiri Swan Knights.

They're noble, graceful and beautiful to me. That's what they are in the setting. If any single unit embodies a faction, out of all factions, this is it. The Principality have their Royal Gryphons, the Sun King has some units that I love, same with other factions, but the Swan Knights are one of the first loves of mine, and I had them in mind twelve years or more ago. Charging a unit of Swan Knights is a nice feeling. You'll find that out for yourself, but it IS nice.

Of course, the Ilsithi are the Swan Folk, so there are other units of their 'feel'; chariots, swan riders and others, but if the Swan Knights weren't right, the setting couldn't be right. So, I hope you love them as much as I do, and watch them charge something horrible like Rats when you get the chance.

UNIT SHOWCASE: The Ilsithi Black Swans

    NOTES

The Black Swans are one of my favourites again...they are the foremost infantry unit in the Swan Prince's army, and their Lord has been the overall commander of the field army of the Swan Prince since it's institution. The commander was probably the first Ildiri 'hero' made, and he's shown here. The idea of Black Swans was that it gave a more severe feel to them as a unit; they're not bright and lovely, but dour and silent. They are war-like for Ildiri, but their main purpose is to hold forces together - their presence in a battle line solidifies the line, as they ae renowned for having NEVER broken and run from a foe. They are entirely silent in battle, relentless and frightening. Their formation was from a force that acted as a specifically for state ceremonies - funerals, weddings, anything beyond the White Court Guards' jurisdiction, but they were turned more and more to military service, and proved to be lethal in battle, so were expanded. It is a great honour to be chosen, as they are the most honoured unit outside the nobility, and the Swan Knights are noble caste.

    FACTIONAL LORE

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    What are the Ildiri?

The Ildiri, often referred to as 'Sea' or 'High', 'The Fairest' Elves, are one of the elven races that began awakening from the conception of the Dragon's Egg in physical matter - so, when the planet/world was at it's youngest, the elves, as they originally were, came into being.
The Ildiri are the Elves with domain over Water - the lifeblood of the world. They had the broadest task of all elves, as there was water inland, in lakes, pools, waterfalls, streams, rivers - all kinds of water bodies, still and flowing. There was also shoreline water, deep ocean water, and, weirdly, the water in the atmosphere - the vapours of the dragon's breathing.

The Ildiri, as with all elves, have two forms; a 'natural' one and a 'Glamour' form; a form designed to appear how others would be more comfortable seeing them. This is kind of like a translator for languages, in that it allows them to meet with other races in similar form and the two can then find immediate common ground.

Their natural form is a simple humanoid, yet long limbed and lithe, graceful, swift, calming. They seem as though they are made of very dense liquid - there is a 'skin' but it is not utterly opaque. Beneath this skin are the bones, which are formed of coral, and the organs, which are formed of vegetation - to filter their fluids are sponges and there are 'seaweed' type substances acting as other organs - they do not follow a human pattern of organs, but have their own, but they approximate in the same way.

Their eyes are ever changing, yet stunning; like liquid pools that change from blue to lilac to sea greens....many colours that shine at their perfect hue and luminosity. This form is not weak; it is rather strong, but physically, they probably aren't as strong as humans in some ways, but are far swifter, more dexterous and have remarkably agile minds.

In their protective form, they appear as human in form, but often with white, blue or very pale skin. Their eyes shine and follow similar colours to their other form. The darker skinned areas are usually colder in appearance; so you get icy blues where there were sea blues etc. They seem solid, opaque, comfortable looking to the eye, and intensely captivating. They are the most beautiful of all creatures on the Dragon to most that view them.

    Faction Intro/Lore-ical Overview

When the world was Young, the Ildiri were the first brought to the light by the Celesti elves. They were given power over the Air and Water, for the two endlessly intertwine. As water is the lifeblood of all, so the Ildiri remained the base of all life, and they were swift to recognize and bind the Avatars of the Dragon to their own friendship. The Ildiri are without guile, without equivocation, and their word is a bond as strong at the deepest oceans, by which they gladly bind themselves to those who are deserving.

They live long lives, and hold themselves in two kingdoms - those of the Swan and the Heron. Unless cloaked, they have skin as blue as the most beautiful waters, their eyes shine violet, and their bodies are bound around a strong, strong coral. A warrior race, they maintain a large professional army, yet take no joy in killing - they are just wise enough to know that life is never free of bloodshed or external threat. Aware in a whispered way, they know the Ghaurchlai are free to roam once more, and they sense the Cimrai bringing the Cthonae of the Abyss into reality once more - the first time since the Infected smashed the Dwarven Holts in the youth of the world. They are not fools, and remain vigilant, knowing that evil always finds a way.

A SECOND PIECE ABOUT THE ILDIRI

Please don't be mystified if this conflicts with anything, as it's OLD and I get confused sometimes, but it's never been seen.

Of old, there Ildiri in all corners of the world we know of. Much as the Selediri, Elves of the hot and dry places, the Elves of the Earth; Lindiri and the Rhysthari Lizard folk lay all about, the Ildiri dwelled in the lands that needed them, and most did. In the early times, they travelled amongst all other Elient (the Eldest, original caregivers of the world) and their minds shaped waterways through the land, often under it's mantle too. The Selediri could channel their waters up, to below the surface where they would not run dry, given plants by the Lindiri to store such waters within, and pooling in oases. Lindiri Elves were hungriest for the waters of the ildiri, as their creations could not survive without a constant flow, and the Rhysthari drew the rivers into several kingdoms, as men know them, places where the waters lay still, yet replenished themselves, like breeding like. Their swamp kingdoms were self sustaining, and the Rhysthari would emerge from stable homes to tend the less stable outer lands. Ever were the Ildiri paramount.

History is an unbalanced eye when these days were concerned, for few thought to make records of such things; much of history for the Eleint is timed from the emergence of the Khezdruli, or from the first war that subdued their excesses, even as it unleash the First Infection. Humans would note the war between Elf and Dwarf as being comfortably 50,000 years before humanity fought it's infancy and emerged in societies, however basic they were. The rise of Valerian and his Empire is considered a mere 1300 years gone. Humans emerged into sentience perhaps a thousand years before that, but that may be generously inaccurate. Certainly the Void Temple can draw records to 400 years prior to the Empire, but they were unique in themselves.

The Eleint began to form stronger communities and segregated realms before the Dwarves were torn from their Cauldrons, and the greatest was the Kingdom of Dove and that of the Heron. Ildiri were the weakest-bound of Eleint, as they tended water in all forms. Early they separated into the land Ildiri, the Aethiri of the clouds and the Maermiyrae of the seas. It is common amongst the Eldest to forget, or attempt to place past names in the future or future names in the past, and the Aethiri and the Maermiyrae were placed beyond conscience after they left to better tend their demesnes, leaving only the Ildiri. It is assumed that the Kingdom of Doves was Aethiri, and the name was lost with their passing.

Thus, the Ildiri were left with the Kingdom of Herons, and this realm scattered across the western continent's inner coasts. In parts marsh-like, a mass of linked rivers, pools, lakes and vast moving waters, the Heron King ruled his lands from the largest of Ildiri settlements, much of which floated within bodies of water stretching miles in all directions. These were ephemeral lands, woven with mists and the makeup of the land itself would waver and shift as with water. After the war with the Dwarves and the following Infection, the Ildiri made their outposts smaller by necessity, for they had suffered the loss of many of their people. Leaving small and isolated communities to care for ever larger areas, they bound themselevs ever more with the Avatars of the waters, as fewer elves could give greaer benefits in such a reduced elven capacity.

The Kingdom of Herons took a more rigid, more physical appearance, and they built a lasting monument, raising walls to live behind, fixing the lands to stay in stillness and order, drawing mists from their greater haunts, binding solid existence into their world, and, in doing so, they bound themselves to the land, instead of shifting like the waters. Warned from such a stance by the Rhysthari, they were forced to ignore such things, as they shackled themselves in the way the Lindiri and Selediri already were. No longer was their world ephemeral, and their sense of peace was diminished by response.

As humanity rose, the Ildiri withdrew, as much as the lindiri were forced, for they could not endure another war. Having quarelled with their older siblings, the Celesti, they were bound to the fate of humanity, for they had chosen to allow it to forge it's own path, and this autonomy was bought at the expense of their lands narrowing. Their eventual response was to breed superstition amongst these simplistic beings, and to discourage their entry to certain places, where the wilds were fearsome and many became lost, to never return to their people. The Kingdom of Herons was once such place, and mists and fogs were used to deter human interest in the Ildiri lands. Elsewhere, the Lindiri were dreaming fears of the deepest woods into humans, and the Selediri simply made it impossible for humans to find water for any in numbers, hiding existing oases, creating mirages of ones that did not exist to layer deception upon deception. Still there were elves in small communities everywhere, but their own kingdoms grew in importance, as a stronghold should somewhere be needed in any possible future as yet not foreseen.

The Heron Kingdom was truly born in the first throes of human civilisation. Here, there was a cocoon of mists and the protection of Avatars. With little effort, trespassers could become lost and turn around, to arrive at their point of entry, confused but safe, and few bothered to attempt to penetrate them over time. Ildiri still remained in most places they had taken as centres of their 'work', and they often found good people around them, who respected or even idolised the Ildiri, whose beauty and grace could not be hidden. It was not until the Ghaurchlai Genocide and humanity after this event that Ildiri were truly threatened by man. The Federation, the Only and others would hate them, or turn their own problems on the Avatars and Eleint, seeing them as 'abnormal', easily blaming poverty, illness and anger redirected from a true cause upon the Elves, as it was expedient for the harsher regimes.

However, one human body became friends and protectors of the Ildiri; Valerian forged a friendship with the Ildiri, and his Empire remained largely true to this beginning. Some called him 'bewitched' by them, but most delighted in their company. During the Ghaurchlai Genocide, the Ildiri were pivotal, bringing others to the war that would have otherwise not interfered. Ithil, the 'Frail Feather', was a creature of utter beauty and magnificence, and she often was abroad, visiting the Daikini and others, usually as an emissary to important Imperial figures. She initiated many wonders amongst her own people. The Pegasi, thought lost to the Aethiri, returned to flock about her monastic home in the highlands, where her Mercies worked in healing arts, alongside training to be her guard, both home and abroad.

It i said that birds flocked wherever she went, that waters raised lilies to her radiance. The signs of her passage were many, and all were struck by her, as she seemed ever to have interest in their lives, solely interested in that person; as she smiled it seemed to be an intimate interest for every person of her audience.

The Ildiri learned to retain a standing army, bent to that purpose only, as they had seen their smiths and others with skills slaughtered in battle many times, untrained for battle. It was what saved them from the Ghaurchlai. When they breached their mists, they slew the Swan Prince, and Ithil sacrificed herself to allow her people to flee to the White Fortress, and this bloomed into a vengeance that saw the Ildiri committed to the war, to it's bitter end.

The Heron King represented the older Ildiri, slightly capricious and deeply traditional, recounting their histories, leading to some humans calling him the 'Fisher King'. He was far more aloof from human affairs than some wished it; as it is with the Fennweyr, he lay his roots in the deeper magics of tend of thousands of years past. Courteous to all others, he remained distant to those without his borders, but the mists lay dispersed after the Genocide, and the Ildiri were more open than before. As had been tradition, the oldest Prince was named the Swan Prince and commanded the main army, surrounded by his Imhrain Imhraun; the glittering Swan Knights. There was a name for those who trod his path; Ilsithi or Elisti. The Ilsithi were the Prince's people, and the Elisti were bestowed upon him by his father. This led to an amazing event in the history of the Ildiri.

When the Khezdruli had been bound to treaty after their vast war, they had to surrender the areas they mined, should they reach a level of depletion considered dangerous, whereupon the Rhysthari would enter the abandoned lands to begin the healing process. In the East, the Kingdom of Angarech had reached this point within the hills and lesser mountains of a large area, and they decided to pass the lands to the Ildiri, as the Dwarves held the greater relationship with these Elves; the Lindiri were cold to them, and the Selediri simply held less interest in the Dwarves than the Ildiri. The Ildiri had flooded the Dwarven Holts to beat the Infection that began within, and the Dwarves had allowed the drowning of many of their own folk within, to save those already fled. The Ildiri saw this as a sacrifice beyond what they believed the Dwarves capable of, and they had warmed to them over thousands of years.

The Dwarves bestowed them with the lands they were emptying, and the Emperor gave them a tract he believed of little worth, gaining a military ally in the process. Here was born the Kingdom of the Swan, and the Prince of the Ildiri, Ialdiseir, was sent to claim it and bring it into worth for his people, which he did with remarkable success. Here there was no isolation. He allowed others to see the beauty he was creating, and the Military he devised was strong in might and grace. This land gained the Ildiri the respect and admiration of many, but also the suspicion and enmity of others. What they gained was also threatened, and the Ildiri were forced to defeat a slaving fleet of Ashapur mere miles from their coast, the Ildiri forces joined by a force of Imperials from the naval base at Fleet, who brought word of the attack that was coming. The Ildiri destroyed the Ashapuri fleet, and chased the survivors until a second fleet from Hanghaven came to their rescue, upon which the Ildiri fell back. It was a serious blow to Ashapur, but they began a clandestine war instead, which was largely ineffectual, relying on bribery, indoctrination and coercion, most of which failed entirely. They though elves to be as humans, and discovered the fallacy of this after squandering vast resources.

The Ildiri in the East learned recently of the depredations of the Only Church against the Lake Kingdom, and they stand aghast. However, threats come from many angles; the Federation hold little love for them, Descati and his Ghaurchlai revile them, the memory of their defeat burning. Ashapur remember their losses far too distinctly, and the Sythys Cult desire them eradicated. Others fail to see their worth or see their wealth and covet it. The Haladin believe their blood to hold far greater power than humans. The Only present their greatest quandary, as they cannot see their Mistiriel of the Lake Kingdom slaughtered, and the Only are likely to turn to them next, their power consolidated, militarily and diplomatically. There also throws up questions in the nature of the Bandit Kingdom, as Solace has returned there, and they see the Imperial East bristling for war; it may be a war the Ildiri are forced into, but they understand the emergence of Solace and could not fight against the Ephemeral City under any real circumstance - the best they can hope for there is that Solace will move on. Otherwise they may be forced to fight the Empire in the East. They are beset by foes, despite many of them being far from visible. The Lindiri have warned them of the Chitkinnen, whose movements are frightening. It is said they mass near enough to the Kingdom of Swans for concern, even if their intial target is humanity.

To many, the Elves have no place in this world, living at the edges of civilised lands, a phantom to some, the Elves are redundant or worse to others. Their methods of living, of thinking, are above those of humans; they have a reason for being on the Dragon, and they cannot deviate from that purpose. They view events with far more intelligence and depth than humanity, and this is a vast handicap in many ways : the Swan Prince and his lands are seen, perhaps correctly, as a deviation from their meaning, a move towards being more like the humans, but, at the end, the Elves of the Swan Kingdom are held in as powerful a vice as the Elves of the Heron Kingdom. Where humans wallow in superstition and ignorance, the Elves are above such things. Whatever they wish, they have a truth to their existence that is unavoidable.

    Ilidiri Colours of Magic

The Ildiri are Ley channellers, which means they collect the brain impulses (Ley) of the Dragon and form it into magic, which they use part of, returning all that is taken to the flow of serotonin fed nerve pulses that cascade around the ley-lines. They are 'positive' magic 'users'.
Their primary colours are White, Blue and Mercury - so Life/Healing/Peace, The Waters and the Air/Speed etc.
I can waffle about that later, but there are threads on magic in this forum...have a peek at anything there is.

THE DEATH OF ITHIL, FRAIL FEATHER OF THE ILDIRI

The Ildiri have always been present wherever water was. They are irrevocably tied with the air and sky, but there used to be a distinction, before the time when the Aethiri left the sides of their brothers - named Aethiri after they made this distinction between water and air. The Aethiri were said to have a city that floated above the clouds.

However, with the advent of man, and the colonisation they began, the Ildiri and other elves gave ground, many of the smaller communities fading back into the deeper regions, where they remained guardians of life. However, the King Iythair, the first Heron King, founded a kingdom called the Kingdom of Herons in the west. Here dwelled many of the Ildiri - tens of thousands, and they made their peace with humanity, offering only that they would stay within these bounds for the price of allies and supporters of the most benevolent humans - the Empire. Under Valerian, a pact was agreed, as was a place in the east in the lakes of Mirytine...the Lake Kingdom.

The Kingdom of Herons was draped in a mist, a fog, that obscured all entrances to their lands, and would confuse enemies, turning them always back to the edge of the Kingdom, no matter how many times they tried to penetrate, foiling any attempt to map the routes in. This was powerful magic, coiling mists that drained the energy from those that attempted its passage.

The Ghaurchlai were the only ones to broach this mist, and they did so in two places...one was the entryway to the Heron Kingdom, one was more secret, but broached all the same, made as a way of passage from the Ildiri Kingdom into the secluded port city of Ereneth.
The battle between the Ghaur in the south was fierce, and the Heron King's son, the Swan Prince, laid his life and that of his entire host down to summon the Water Phoenix, an ancient Avatar that they had been friends with for thousands of years. The Phoenix exploded in a torrent of water, drowning all in its path, or crushing in a welt of water; even burning them with the bite of ice. Upon the death of the Prince, the Ghaurchlai's second army broke through, with none to oppose them. As the populace fled, the White Fortress gathered those it could across its magnificent bridges, but many thousands seemed impossible to save.

The Princess, the Frail Feather, Ithil, set forth from her court, aided by her few hundred Maidens, warrior healers, and a thousand of the Fort's garrison. They crossed the bridges in solemn grace, to meet the army of the Ghaurchlai, who numbered at least 50 times their own. As the people streamed past her and her host, she advanced, solemnly singing until they met the Ghaur that had come forth in a frenzy. These they cut down, as they were the weakest and less controllable of their kind. As she claimed a hill for her forces, the main Ghaur force advanced to meet her.
On this hill, the snow drops grew in abandon, and would become mired, drowned in blood that day - ever after they grew red.

The Ghaur crashed into Ithil's lines, and met defiance and steel, with Ithil in the centre, flanked by her Moon Maidens. Spearmen thronged each side, and the small number of bowmen lined the hill's crest. For two hours the bitter battle was fought, assault after assault beaten by her host's conviction and their love for the Princess. Something about Ithil made the Ghaurchlai frenzy in desperate assaults, and all the while, her people fled to safety. After the Demon Spawn fell back in dismay, the lines held, but many of the greater brethren of Ghaurchlai walked forth from their throng. Slaughterstars, Baelogres, Vore Angels, the Revenants; all kinds of the worst beasts of nightmare slowly moved to the inevitable slaughter.

The Ghaur hit the front lines of Ildiri, and their ranks crumpled, bent, then resurged to hold the position they would soon die in. As the Moon Maidens fell in droves, the Spearmen became isolated from Ithil, whilst she sang what was said to be the most beautiful song ever sung. All eyes turned to her in lust, and she moved amongst her Maidens, as the Spearmen fell silent. As her words changed, the survivors melted away, ordered to save their own lives, and the Ghaur did not oppose them in this.

Revenants fell upon her maidens, but they fought them to a standstill, for only the best of her warriors remained. One after another, the Ghaur assaulted her lines, even as she sang and cut down all of the beasts sent against her. True light shone from her very soul and her voice was joyous. Then a shadow fell upon her, as her lines buckled and were forced from her side. A Slaughterstar bent over her, hunched and deformed, the light of stars in it hungry maw. Ithil met it blow for blow, and her clothing became slick with blood, until her blade shattered and she sank to her knees. She remained defiant, and as the Slaughterstar pulled her up to devour her, she drove her broken blade in its face again and again, even as he tore her apart. Upon the moment of her death, the Slaughterstar fell, lifeless, savagely burnt by her purity, and a thousand Swallows streamed from the sky to gather her body, to take this last indignity from the expectant Ghaurchlai.
Even the stars did not shine that night, and the Kingdom of Herons lay silent, save for the weeping of all that was good.

    THE LANDS OF THE ILDIRI

The Kingdom of Herons is the oldest kingdom in the twin continents, and is reinforced by old magic. The species of animal, bird, plant and tree are old, preserved from the beginnings of life on the Dragon. Here are the last of many things, and the magic at work here has sheltered them all. Elsewhere, the flora and fauna exist in patches, often warded by an Avatar, but not in the numbers present in the mist-laden lands. The Principality has a herd of unicorns, gryphons and other marvels, but there is a distinct difference with the Ildiri wards and the Lindiri, for instance. The Lindiri are similar in their ways to the Fennweyr, so both places hold similar species and depths. The Ildiri have little of such design. What they hold is incredible,, beautiful, filled with grace and innocence. Only in the Heron King's lands are they entirely safe, as the world has changed around them, they have drawn their charges ever tighter into their embrace.

The Kingdom of Swans is not the same, however. They have creatures that are mystical in all ways, they have the Ildiri themselves, but they have been given this land and migrated there, not stood as it's caretaker for thousands of years. Here, the valleys, the hills and forests are filled with the same plants, the same trees and the same animals as any other similar land contains. This Kingdom, whilst glittering in so many ways, holds little of the ancient grace of their older land. The Swan Prince has forged a wonder, and his people prosper - to many, the Ildiri seem so much more 'acceptable' and open than ever before, and this is true, but the loss of their deeper grace cannot be entirely be forgotten. To some of the elves, it leaves a hollowness they cannot begin to explain, and some have returned to the Heron Kingdom, unable to cope with such loss. The Ildiri that remain seek to change this, but it may be centuries or more before they can build the new lands to equal the old.

CHARACTERS OF NOTE AMONGST THE ILDIRI

    HERON KINGDOM

The Heron King - Elsetair Terelen

The line of Heron Kings has been consistent fro the last 2000 years. Elsetair is the fourth King since the Ghaurchlai Genocide, and he is a distant figure in many ways. He regrets giving the Crown Prince, Ilias Terelen, such freedom in the matter of the new lands, his 'Swan Kingdom', as his son is threatening much of what the King himself holds true, which involves centuries of experience towards humanity. There is conflict between them on this matter, and Elsetair has had the foresight to prepare for what he sees as an inevitable repercussion in the east. He sees war on every front; it is coming, and he worries that the Swan Kingdom may have divided his people too much. He is not a weak man, however, and his preparations are precise, even and hold wisdom.

Eaveian Laysair - The Commander of the White Court

AT the centre of the preparations of the Heron Kingdom is this man. He trains his men hard, has prepared them for every possibility he can, and has set in place responses on every front and threat. He gathers naval strength to the Kingdom's ports, has every settlement garrisoned and their standing force has expanded without detriment to the people of the kingdom. Should more be necessary, he has his mind on it in advance.

Usulthir Vawn - The White Flame, leader of the Fires of Undreth

Usulthir leads his military order well. He is experienced and his abilities at warfare are almost unparalleled. He holds his forces back, and will only unleash them when the Ildiri god of vengeance gives him a clear target in his prayers and inevitable visions.

Kieul Starsong - The Lord of the Moontower

Kieul is not a hugely important figure, but he has vast wisdom, and his abilities at Channelling Ley Magic are vast. He can direct this power where he wills it, but he is no warrior. He is far more a defensive thinker than aggressive, and that will bear strong fruit should he be needed.

Liraeseil Lorne - Warden of the White Walls

Liraeseil is the Lord of the White Fortress, the choke point that will hold the Kingdom of Herons should the south fall. His ancestor held the walls against the Ghaurchlai until the forces of Aden and the Void Temple came to relieve the siege that had stained the walls black.

Kier Anathil - Lord of the Tears of Ithil

The Tears if Ithil are a massive force for the Heron Kingdom to rely upon. Disciplined, deadly, they fight with little regard fro death, holding Ithil's sacrifice as their own. If she gave her life for her people, so they should for her memory. He sees the safety of the Ildiri as a black and white matter, where his peers see such ting in shades of light. Any foe that comes to his people will die upon his sword, or he on theirs.

Iereine Lasilve - Commander of the Heron King's Navy

A wonderfully joyous woman, Iereiene commands both the Navy of the Heron King and commands the vast majority of the healers and Channellers of the Kingdom. Blessed with power and virtue both, she is often seen in the waters of her homeland, amongst the Avatars that hold her people as dear as she does. Her use in war is massive, but she is limited in her appreciation of threat, which may be her undoing.

    ---------------

    THE SWAN KINGDOM

Ilias Terelen - The Swan Prince

Ilias is headstrong and proud, which are not bad qualities for a Prince, but he has favoured these untempered by doubt or wisdom. His pride is too much, and he is rash, but his heart is true to his people. In battle, he is untested, but he is fearless. Any test will find him willing, but it remains to be seen if it finds him able. He and his father have faded in their relationship, but he buries regrets on this front rather than face or evaluate his father's concerns.

Aoriel Teeme - The Black Swan

Commander of the Ilsithi Black Swans, this man is dour at times, but he is such because he worries about his people. He holds doubts about his Prince's chosen path, but sits in preparation for something to go wrong, as he is sure it must. This lends itself to blacker moods, but he is a man with a graceful mind, and his worries are founded. His soldiers will meet any challenge, and he does not wish to be the person who buries the Swan Prince. He is plagued by this matter, but turns such things in the right way. None will be so prepared as he for the darker possibilities in the future.

Caerlisyn Laratheil - The White Swan

The chosen commander of the armies of the Swan Prince, Caerlisyn has hold on the glittering forces his Prince has created from almost nothing. He shares the need of the Prince for his peoples' beauty to be seen, and hopes that this will gain allies and understanding, and holds few doubts as to this. Whether he is a fool will not matter; he will still command with skill and utter belief in his people. He commands all Ilsithi forces, which are large enough to concern any single foe.

Irithiel Lassarin - The Falcon's Wing

Irithiel is the lord that the Heron King sent to attempt to bring order to his son's growing belligerence, and he adores both Prince and King. He led the Edesti orders to support the Prince, and stand ready for anything. He is the eyes and ears of the Swan Kingdom, and a massive asset to the Ildiri in any situation. Ilias allows Irithiel to speak openly to the Prince in private, but his support is without limits, as long as his Prince has heard his doubts or simply heard a differing viewpoint to his own. He worries, but his net is wide, and he controls both the Naval strength of the Swan Kingdom and command of the Falcon Knights and the highly mobile Eiyann Falcons. All are led well and are devoted to their lord. In his dreams, he knows doubt, and sees enemies he cannot seem to reveal in the light, but he is both confident and skilled, and his doubts do not deter his base optimism.

The Ildiri hold land on the east and west continents, which can dilute their power; only through clever organisation can they reach their true potential. They are a highly effective DEFENSIVE faction, well organised, highly motivated, but are slow to improve upon their start position.

    GENERAL INFO

Moral Leanings: 'Good' but 'alien' to normal human psychology
    Military Strength: Excellent
    Naval Strength: Excellent
    Wealth: Very Good
    Mythic Support: Excellent

Strengths: Well disciplined and organised army, but split between east and west...if they operate together, they are the PERFECT military force. No weaknesses at all.

Missile: Very Good (ley missiles and magic)
    Cavalry: Excellent
    Air Cavalry: Excellent
    Infantry: Excellent
    Artillery: Ley

Military Weakness: Slow to recruit. Split between east and west; this divide HUGELY weakens their effectiveness. Terrible in deserts, or cold climates. Bad moral choices affect the peoples' happiness - Generals with Dread almost useless. New Generals far and few between. Ghaurchlai HATE them, as do Cthonae. Set up position makes for difficult strategic options.

    Bandits Take!

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The elven factions are one of the few factions that have there eyes on the bigger picture. The abyss is coming and they must be ready. What I like about this faction is they are in search of peace and calm but are as ready for war as any other faction on the planet though they mostly wish to avoid it. The faction starts split between the east and west. The traditionalist west and more adventurous east. The soldiers of both factions are strong and can hold the line while at the same moment striking the enemy down at range with Ley arrows and lay magic. The Ildiri have made strong bonds with many of the human factions that have shown them respect and honor and these bonds will be extremely hard to break. There are enemies however and the two most appealing to attack are the federation and Ashapur. What will you do? wait for the Abyss so you can strike it down? Or try to change the course of the world in hopes of saving it?

    Kaiser's Waffle

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Ildiri are definitely one of the most interesting factions in Dragondawn so far. How often do you get to see knights riding on gigantic swans flying across the battlefield in a Total War game? Although I’m not normally a big fan of playing with a split empire, it really helps to show how the Ildiri are effectively two separate kingdoms with different units and customs. The western Heron Kingdom is very traditional and isolationist whilst the younger, western Swan Kingdom is much more pro-active and willing to take the fight directly to their abyssal enemies. Or whoever you choose to fight. The armies themselves are amongst the best to be found in any factions. They are easily capable of holding a line whilst also striking out with fast cavalry, chariots and devastating ley weaponry. The Ildiri truly are a force to behold.

    Neko's Fave Faction

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Ildiri are definitely my favorite faction in DragonDawn. Its one of those factions you either love or hate. I fell in love in Ildiri during the testing of their units. I am one of those guys who play TW games for battles, and I must say that Ildiri are perfect for that. They have everything: from spears, swords, weird axemen and bows to shiny cavalry, chariots, flying units and of course the one and only Fires of Undreth. Tactical possibilities are infinite and every unit is special in their own way.
Most of the time your opponents don't have the slightest clue what hit them. Soon you guys will see what am I talking about when Third Battle is released.

Astonishing. Took me a while to read it thorougly. And this is only a peak of the iceberg. This mod is probably going to be the most detailed and complete of those I had pleasure to play. Your meticulous attention to the details is simply unbelieveable. Love this work of art!

EDIT: I have a question. The unit cards are going to be like in the third pic, that is to say the unit cards will all look like general's unit cards? Won't this be a bit confusing?

Do you mean in this picture? If so then I don't think the Unit Card are completely finished, but chances are they'll be reasonably similar to this.

I think you may have a few problems with this mod then. Most of the units have some sort of masks or full helmets covering their faces .

Thats alright, however that's how this[Dragon Dawn] world works, its common for military units to go into battle with full helms or covered faces. Every faction will have units like this and that is how it was planed it from the start.

Thanks It's kind of something that I think everyone wants to be the best it possibly can be. If we don't make it everything we can it's going to be a rather large shame....support like this makes it doubly worthwhile. There is a kind of 'Will people really want to trawl through all of this?; too sometimes, but it seems to be worth it in that way as well.

Cool Well, Kaiser Leonidas is working on an East Empire one. Fair way to go, but it seemed a shame to have people eager to see it too and just leave it. These things don't halt progress, as it all ties in and needs to be done anyway, so it's nice to show it off. It's very morale building for us.

It should keep coming. When sections are completed, it builds momentum and then we can mostly sign a faction off. SHowing them done ends a part of the work, to a large degree, so each is a milestone.

Ah yes. Well, the likelihood is the background will remain, but that the background for characters/generals will be very different from normal units; more lavish and more individual.

I can safely say it's the loveliest bunch of people as a team.

Heh. Sure. There's a mixed response sometimes on that front, and it won't be the last negative one. S'fine to me. Trouble is that this won't alter hugely, save for certain sections...there will be unmasked ones, as it were, but they're not the majority. If it's enough to put you orff, then that's a bit sad, but I think (maybe wrongly) that heavily funded regular armies would justify better equipment, and I'm annoyingly in love with interesting equipment, and a helmet sets a feel for a unit and a faction very much. I guess we're taking full advantage of it being high fantasy too. ALways be honest though, with these things.

Kind of what I think...stops arrows and stuff finding an easy target, and is unnerving.

Yep. It's not going to heavily deviate. I just like it at the end of tut day too. It makes it easier to make iconic units and retain a faction-wide theme

    Thanks SO much everyone!!
