Thread: One year per turn??

  1. #1

    Default One year per turn??

That's seems really ridiculous mainly because I like seasons and that doesn't seem like there will be seasons, also my generals will die off within a few turns, I'll make a sick army for señor Caesar and we will get into Gaul and he will be dead. It didn't take a year to cross into Gaul and you usually didn't siege a settlement for 20 years.

Well I have never sieged a city for 20 turns in a TW-game.
But even with one turn/year you still have 45 turns, until your character reaches his 60's. Leaves some time for him to advance in various skills. And this time the legions shall have their own history and improvements. This makes characters maybe not that important compared to older games.

People are jumping to conclusions, I'm pretty sure there will still be seasons. CA only disconnected the year count from the seasonal count. Not really realistic perhaps but neither would it be realistic to conquor the Roman empire within 20 years which would have been the case if they wouldn't have done that. This wasy most players actually reach the AD years in a typical campaign, 300 turns seems like a reasonable number for a campaign (how long was shogun 2? ETW was 200 right?)

And I guess that with an average action time of 30 years your family would use up 10 generations, seems reasonable.

The only problem is how long politicians in Rome are going to hold to their positions, I guess yearly senatorial elections are not really workable.

I don't see that CA had confirmed this. Every side tell us something diffrent. I think it will be at least 2 Turns, maybe even 4, because many want it that way.

Dominique Starr (Lead Campaign Designer) told it on the german press event in Munich at the end of february.

I too would like to see more turns per year, but remeber the campaign will cover about 300 y of history imagine if there was 4 turns per year you would need 1200 turns to end the campaign XDDD even if there where 2 turns per year you would still need about 600 turns to finish wich is quite a lot.

I am not saying it would be practical but, I would prefer a slider setting for it

    1 - 12 tpy.

Exactly and everything like building and recruitment times could scale accordingly to what option you picked.

I don't see any problem with one turn per year. CA had family members age one year in two game years in Medieval 2 and might come up with the same unrealistic solution for Rome 2.
All I am hoping for are four seasons, so the winter attrition in central Europe lasts for only 25 % of the turns.

Hope they add the option to either play 1, 2, 3 or 4 turns per year.

Modding should be able to address this if it's anything like Shogun 2. Given that they're talking about 3 agent types, it sounds like it does carry some similarities over from S2. Hopefully startpos files are one of those things.

Hopefully seasonal terrain is still implemented, along with winter attrition. Or maybe those features have just been cut. I hope not.

I would at want 4 turns at least.

If it is 1 year, then my generals and people are going to be dead before I can almost do anything!

It would also make campaigns odd as armies could use 1-3 years just to cross a mountain... o.O

One turn per year seems like a step backwards, CA should really step up and give us an option here for all the fans that have become attached to the multiple seasons per year. Personally I like to develop my characters, I hate when generals die off after 25-35 turns.

4 x 300 time period, 1200 turns?! are you high?

That' BAD news. Maybe seasons were not that important for strategy and tactics (but only because of arcadish style of TW), but it added lot of atmosphere to gameplay. Plus with 1 year per turn characters will die way too fast. And all what happens in game will look now more unrealistic than before. Just imagine talks like: "What have you done this year? - Well, I marched from Rome till Milan... all year." It feels especially bad for whose who played with seasons and turns of NTW and S2TW. If these news are true, it's really downgrade of TW.

I'm not surprised or disappointed, but I would like to see the reasoning behind this choice. Perhaps campaigns of approximately 300 turns are the goal now?

If you think about that past games.

Medieval 1 - If you start in the Dark Age - 500 turns @ 1tpy
    Rome 1 - 600 turns @ 2tpy
    Medieval 2 - 300ish? turns @2 years per turn
    Empire - 200 turns @ 2tpy
    Napoleon?
    Shogun 2 - 300ish turns at 4tpy

The choice to have one turn per year is not exactly out of line with the game length of their past games and thus should not surprise anyone.

I would of course like to see a slider that changes the turn time, aging and recruitment, building, event times etc - that would be the easiest thing to implement IMO

I specifically changed my M2TW settings from 2 years per turn to 2 turns per year; all my campaigns since Empire felt just too damn short... I was expecting this, in a way. And I'm waiting for a game which would last 1200 turns. I'd rather have a campaign lasting 1200 turns than another one that I play for two days and I'm already halfway through the timeline...

4 x 300 time period, 1200 turns?! are you high?
M2TW lasts from 1080 till 1530 - 450 years, set by 2 turns per year, that makes 900 turns, I've set this way my every single campaign
