Default CATAPHRACTS in Rome 2 - general discussion

What do you think about cataphracts?

A cataphract was a form of armored heavy cavalry utilised in ancient warfare by a number of peoples in Western Eurasia and the Eurasian Steppe.
The word in English is derived from the Greek: κατάφρακτος Kataphraktos (plural: κατάφρακτοι Kataphraktoi), literally meaning "armored" or "completely enclosed". Historically, the cataphract was a very heavily armored horseman, with both the rider and steed draped from head to toe in scale armor, while typically wielding a kontos or lance as their weapon.
".. But no sooner had the first light of day appeared, than the glittering coats of mail, girt with bands of steel, and the gleaming cuirasses, seen from afar, showed that the king's forces were at hand." Ammianus Marcellinus, late Roman historian and soldier, describing the sight of Persian cataphracts approaching Roman infantry in Asia Minor, circa fourth century.
Cataphracts served as either the elite cavalry or assault force for most empires and nations that fielded them, primarily used for impetuous charges to break through infantry formations. Chronicled by many historians from the earliest days of Antiquity up until the High Middle Ages, they are believed to have given rise in part or wholly to the Age of Feudalism in Europe and the later European equivalents of knights and paladins, via contact with the Byzantine Empire.
Notable folks and states deploying cataphracts at some point in their history include: the Scythians, Sarmatians, Parthian army, Achaemenid army, Sakas, Armenia, Seleucids, Pergamenes, Empire of Goguryeo, the Sassanid army, the Roman army and the Byzantine army.
In the West, the fashion for heavily armored Roman cavalry seems to have been a response to the Eastern campaigns of the Parthians and Sassanids in the region referred to as Asia Minor, as well as numerous defeats at the hands of cataphracts across the steppes of Eurasia, the most notable of which is the Battle of Carrhae. Traditionally, Roman cavalry was neither heavily armored nor all that effective; the Roman Equites corps were composed mainly of lightly armored horsemen bearing spears and swords to chase down stragglers and to rout enemies. The adoption of cataphract-like cavalry formations took hold amongst the late Roman army during the late 3rd and 4th centuries. The Emperor Gallienus Augustus (253–268 AD) and his general and would-be usurper Aureolus bear much of the responsibility for the institution of Roman cataphract contingents in the Late Roman army.

There are three groups of cataphracts:

    1) Eastern (we seen them in Parthian preview)

    2) Hellenistic (Jack Lusted said about them in TWC that they will be in game and they will look other than Parthian)

    3) Roman (late Empire so we don't see them in Rome 1, but maybe in expansion pack)

Look wise I do prefer the Hellenistic and Roman cataphracts although I do plan on playing as Parthia I think cataphracts will definitely have their use but overall with my play style since ETW I do prefer swarms of high damage light cavalry mainly because of the better endurance which I think with cataphracts is going to be big issue. So as long as people can keep them near the battle line with some back up and not run them across the map we could see them used to devastating effect.

They kick ass. They definately make parthia the most interesting faction for me. If I'm lucky Seleucids will be playable some time and I'll be able to recruit hellenistic cataphracts too.

Hellenistic cathapracts look great, a shame they wont come with a playable faction at launch. We'd need the seleucids for that.

That's not a regular hellenistic cataphract. That's Antiochus III "the Great" charging the Roman left wing at Magnesia. Armored in the best armor, as befitting a king.

For me, Parthian cataphracts simply look better than the ones of the Seleucids.

After I see this thread, I understand now why they wield lance(or spear) with both hands.

Its just how they fight, isn't it?
Its easy to make war with others, its never been easy when we need a peace.

Sarmatian influence on Roman cataphracts is clear. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I didn't know that the Romans EVER got cataphracts! The Byzantines, sure, but Romans... I'm surprised! Too bad it's outside the game's time span...

I'll be interested to see if they still bring back the primary weapon = lance and secondary weapon = mace function that cataphracts had in RTW 1. The maces had some devastating effects against heavily armoured units, but I'm not sure how historically accurate it is.

Well if we get a Barbarian Invasions expansion, we'll see Cataphracts and Clibanarii again.

From Wikipedia: "The cataphract-style parade armor of a Saka (Scythian) royal from the Issyk kurgan, dubbed "Golden Man". Note the overlapping golden scales, which is typical of cataphract armor."

Is this another subliminal pro-Seleucids thread that Antiochus keeps making like the "best Seleucid units" thread?

Late Roman Empire Cataphracts look just sooooooooooooooooooooo damn sexy.

Although did Western European contact with the Romans really inspire the knight? As far as I can tell the barbarians tribes of western europe always had a core of nobles who could afford the best armour and weapons and were used as a hammer for the army, I always figured that they just eventually evolved that practice to fight on horse back.

But yes, cataphracts may be the coolest unit ever.
