The demo battle at the Nile with Caesar's XIIIth legion against those Gyppo's, shows us that there will be no big battles battles in Rome 2. Unfortunately no tens thousands of men, no epic battles.
I also dislike the man hurling effects that throw your troops dozens of meters through the air. I just deteste these effects just as the artillery effects in FOTS, it made my line infantry fly around like leaflets.
1. You can see Caesar with his 1.600 men tops. That is way to few. We already can assume that historical battles will be the same size thus making it lame.
2. 1.600 men is more of an armed rebel band rather than a formidable legion, which consists of at least 3.000 men.
3. This immediately means that if you try to tweak the sizes the units will glitch and pathfiind crap starts to happen what will slow down the game. Resulting in lag eventually if not in the field then in the cities.
4. The previous comment seems to be obvious otherwise they would grant us cohorts of 480 men instead of 160.
Solutions:
1. Yes, 160 men seems okay. I multiply it in the scripts folder by X3. Making it a full cohort.
2. Each stack will have 20 direct slots. This means that I could have up to two legions per stack. Of course I will take the auxilia and cavalry into account, so 1 legion per stack seems to be
possible at best. Counting 10 cohorts of 480 men, 1 cavalry unit of approx. 150-200 men max. + 8 slots left for some archers and other auxilia. Making it possible to have around 6.000 men per fully equipped
legion at best.
3. A reserve 20 slot stack as a second legion makes a total per battle of 12.000 men on Roman side possible. These co-joint armies I will send with the consuls at the head of it.
What I am mortally worried about is:
1. lag with 20K men in melee. AARRGH nooooooooo! Bloody game, there goes my Rome TOTAL WAR experience. Rome minor war that is!!!!
2. Soldiers that climb up the wall and packing together making the game lag. This was the case in Shogun 2 when they started to climb the clay walls, they packed together like one big piece of a meatball.
Advice for CA:
Make this a splendour total war, not a minor one. The DEMO showed me a minor one, please telle me the animation stutter is gone when passing the 15K men on the field. PLEASE!!!
If my worries do not come true. This game will be my passion for the rest of my life. I will have a playgasm each time I play it. For Rome, for the Republic, and eventually for the Empire ....and in the expansion THE FALL OF IT!
P.S. Can't wait to play Philippi against Brutus the villain. Of course with 12.000 vs 12.000 without a notch of a lag! Slice n dice my friends~.
